Robert.
- Hi, Laura.
- Thanks so much for being here.
- Good to be back on.
- Now how long have you been with Salt Lake Symphony?
- This is my 18th season doing the orchestra.
So the orchestra's been around since 1976 however, and has been performing concerts that entire time.
- That's amazing.
And I love this title, "Against All Odds!"
It has an exclamation point so you're really serious about it.
- It is.
I mean, we "Against the odds!"
Right?
- And it's exciting, yeah.
- It is.
It's a program, we're gonna open the program with an overture by Fannie Mendelssohn, who was Felix Mendelssohn's sister, older sister.
And it's one of those pieces that was lost and was rediscovered and kind of put back together in fragments, from fragments, and so now we have a complete piece of music from the 1860s that we never knew existed.
- So that's where the title comes from.
- Partially, but all of the music has a connection to that.
We're doing Sergei Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije Suite, which is about a, it was movie music that was put into a suite, and the story is about a soldier who came into existence because of a mistake, 'cause of a clerical error, and so his entire life had to be fabricated.
And so that was against the odds.
He got paid, he was married, he died, had a grand funeral.
All of that happened because of a clerical error, so.
- Oh, how interesting.
- It's fun.
And then the Brahms' First Piano Concerto is going to end the program.
And that was a piece that really wouldn't have come into any kind of world at all, had it not been for Brahms struggling trying to write a symphony.
And Clara Schumann mentioned after she saw the two piano version of it, she said, "Why don't you make that into a symphony?
And then we have a concerto.
We have this great piano concerto.
- Oh, that's great.
I love a cleverly curated concert.
So thank you so much for the work you do with that.
And good luck with the performance.
- Thank you very much.
- If you'd like to learn more about this performance and get tickets so you can attend yourself, again, it's the Salt Lake Symphony.
The program is called "Against the Odds!"
November 4th, 7:30 pm at Libby Gardner Concert Hall.
