It's hard not to think of the magic that we take for granted every day.
I am definitely a time traveler.
I just happen to be lucky to be in the right decade and the right zip code and the r And in my lifetime, so much has So that's a time travel.
Artists have a great role in soc and they always have.
Were at the same time socially acceptable and socially unacceptable.
Creative people are a life forc that keeps things moving forward Whether you're a scientist or an people who are inventing the new are the ones who invent the futu and artists are responsible for making the future look fabulous.
I'm very grateful to have that r Being here in my created world is my favori Hello, Grace.
Welcome to Art and Technology Park, my home.
I'd like you to meet Twiggy.
We are on Little Cranberry Islan which is just off the coast of Mount Desert Islan in the North Atlantic in Maine.
Some people call their house Overcliff or Fox Run or Done Tra but I wanted to have sort of more of an industrial fee because we are all about industr here, which is the proces of making things and discovery.
We are creating ideas and object that have never existed before.
This place sort of just grew, but was entirely without a plan.
It was all very organic.
When you first moved to Maine, what was your living situation like?
So when we first moved to Maine, which was in 1976 with college f that's before tourism really too I lived a little primitive exist We lived in this little house right on the harbor.
Here we go.
We're all sort of eking by on meager salaries, but we had a lot of fun.
So I bought that house and lived in it for 30 years.
And I was blessed with two beau daughters and a fabulous wife.
Raising children here on Moun Desert Island was really quite beautiful.
Hello?
Yes.
Come in please.
Welcome to the Ten Spot.
It's ten-sided.
This was the first building.
It was finished in 2004.
Took about four years to make.
One of the things that I wanted in this house is the seamless transitio between the indoors and the outd When we need to lower the chandelier to light the candles, just as easy as that.
There's nothing like a deadline to get things done.
So the roundhouse had been in c for four years and I was turning and that was the goal to have it ready for that event, because we sent the invitations but they're still was not runnin And we had 300 people coming.
There were no front steps.
There was mud everywhere.
But Courtney put the steps in That morning we had the toilet hooked up the day before, and it was a joyful celebration to mark the first half century.
When we finished the roundhouse one of the carpenters said, hey you know you don't have a bedroom in thi but that did sort of spark the i well, maybe there should be one.
So we put up the yurt as a bedr and because I like making things I needed a place for my table s my band saw, my tools and room t so that meant that I needed a la So this is the laboratory.
It's where the play happens.
Would you like to join me inside Hi, I'm Doctor Shawziewazie Welcome to my laboratory.
So these are some of my future f that I brought back on my last trip to 2039.
This is an odor scope.
It analyzes your scent.
This is for baldness.
This one's for painful flatulenc This one is for fear of the futu Did you ever have a mosquito bit Because I've got the device that can cure it.
You just zap it, and all of a su your mosquito bite is cauterized and it becomes irrelevant.
And once I got that online, then well, Ive really been intrigued by the spiral form and wouldn't it be awesom to blow it up into a giant struc It all starts with a kernel of a and then we just work on that ba idea until it's a good idea.
And certainly working with Henry is a collabor I give him a framewor and then he fills in the details Most people want to know what is going on down here?
Like there's some big secret and, um, I don't tell them.
Sometimes as they're leaving, I'll say, watch out for the bear This is the model for the Twins I built it one night, just sort of thinking it was the right size.
I wasn't thinking too much about And then when Henry built it it was way bigger than I imagine I had forgotten to set it next to the spiral house to see just how big it was going This building came to be immedia after my daughter told me she was pregnant with twins.
So this is the Twins Tower built in celebration of them.
It's made on four stump that grew in a near-perfect para So we cut them off at about nine And those formed the foundation for the building.
Two kids.
So we've got two tables and two and two swings and two towers.
Made that entire thing himself.
No machinery.
Getting 1,000 pound timber up in and placing it precisely, all with 19th century technology of blocks and tackle and chains seems like magic to me.
I don't have much problem with r I'm not afraid to make something that's butt ugly because you never know.
So a lot of my thesis is about abstracting the human form.
And this chair which is designed and built for person, is abstracting the human form by context, because all of a sudden, I'm tin Well, I'm tiny in real life too, but here I'm just half size.
So I love being out here by mys which I often am, but really, I when I have 3 to 500 of my close out here for our gatherings, otherwise known as parties.
All of my parties were science b We had a party called Weird Scie and then we had the Science of Lov and Conference of Experiments, a I would buy lab coats, disposable, paper lab coats.
I bought 250 lab coats.
It's called the Lovers Wheel of Would you like to play?
What we do is we announce the p on Thursday or Friday for Saturd So there's only 48 or 24 hours for the word to get out.
You are here.
I would know maybe 30% of the people, but that was fin because everybody was having a b and that was the point.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Older.
But other than that I don't think I really had any d I was one of those kid who would take apart the toaster and wanted to figure out how things were made.
In my youth I definitely made forts out in t you know, would take fallen dow and pop them up and make a lean to or a little something we can sort of gather in.
I think it's kind of curious th now I'm making these big forts, you know, a little bit more ela but the sort of the impulse is t It's just like little clubhouse.
It's a kids clubhouse.
People ask me, what are you goin with this building?
And that is less important to me because after I'm dead, somebod may turn it into an amusement pa You know, it's unclear.
I am not slowing down.
This is full speed ahead.
Make, make, make until I can't make any more.
Which will never happen.
So this i the next building that we've jus And this occurred because I was that we need to have a bunk hou for my ever expanding grandchild So when Lucy, my daughter, call and told me she was pregnant aga it was like well, let's make you another bui They were all trees that we cut, and they grew in a perfect spiral just like th And the way I found this wa I went searching for the center the mother tree, and when I stood there, all of the surrounding trees that grew in a spiral revealed themselves to me.
Sam, would you say tha building structures is your way love to people?
Where does that come from, that urge?
Well, you're right that I creat the buildings in honor of the ch But really the impulse is just to make more It's just an excuse.
It's a wa to give the building a raison d and what child doesn't like to have a building named after t I had a beautiful daughter, Hann Hannah was a Maine girl.
More than that, she was an Islan She loved to garden.
She loved being on the water.
Super creative super involved in making things.
Hannah was, of all things, a cur and excitable person.
Hannah called me up late one nig She was in a great mood and she to plan her 30th birthday party.
Very excite and she wanted a big party out o Isleford on Little Cranberry.
The next day I got the phone cal that she had died.
It felt provident that we celebrate Hannah's 30th birth as she had requested.
It just really felt like a great sendoff for her.
The name of this boat is Luna, which is a contraction of the n of both of my daughters, Lucy an And of course, it's also to hono the full moon.
What's better than that?
Welcome aboard.
I am the bus driver to the futur I go there often, and brother, it is fabulous.
I brought back futurefacts for your enjoyment.
These medical devices, like so much of medicine and science, is based on faith.
For if they were truly factual, why do they keep changing?
In times to come, the past, the present and the future will be indisting and you will blithely float about in happiness.
