Paterson calls off plan to layoff municipal employees

Mayor Andre Sayegh said departments were able to find cost savings to prevent layoffs.

The city initially planned to layoff 112 police officers, 89 firefighters, and furlough hundreds of other employees to meet its budget shortfall. However, Mayor Andre Sayegh said Tuesday that police and fire departments were able to find cost savings to cover a $4 million public safety budget gap, saving the jobs of many workers.
