Now I want you all to do a little exercise, move around a little bit, eat your meals, and just stay happy and alert and just know that you are loved and cared for and we would love to come visit with you if you'll just contact us and let us know, we'll come in there and just have fun with everybody.
Now, let's say a special, special hello and salute to our Golden Vessel.
Tonight our Golden Vessel salutee is Mrs. Merlene Rice.
She's in Aliceville, Alabama and she's originally from Tuscumbia.
That's right, she was a retired school teacher and she retired from the Pickens County school system.
She's married to Mr. Robert Rice, who's a retired principal.
A whole lot of schooling and teaching going on in that household.
They've been married for 61 years.
Whole lot of love going on in that household too, 61 years of it and they met at Alabama A&M.
Go Bulldogs, yes, indeed.
She's a member of the Christian Light CPCA Church and she's a soloist in the choir.
And I tell you, I heard she can sure enough sang, yes indeed, so Mrs. Merlene Rice, we appreciate you so much and we salute you tonight and we're dedicating the entire "Alabama Gospel Roots" program to guess who?

- I'm doing very well.
I think you were hanging out with Reverend Larris David Thomason, right?
- Unfortunately.
(Pastor George laughing) well, like I say, I stay outta grown folks business.

- So now where are you originally from?
- I'm originally from Chicago, Illinois.
- Uh, huh, south side?
- Suburbs, Aurora.
- Suburbs.
Aurora, all right, okay, let's get specific about that.
Been singing all your life?
- I have, I have been singing all my life.
- Okay and you have other brothers and sisters?
- I do, six of us all together.
- Six, all sing?
- No, I'm the only one.
- You're the only singer.
- No one else in the family sings.
- Ah, so you moved from Chicago to Nashville directly- - Actually moved to Minnesota, got married, then we moved to Nashville so I could go to American Baptist College.
- Gotcha, I gotcha, a great school.
- Yes, it is.
- Great school.
We had the opportunity, that's where we were recorded, Reverend Thomason's, one of his albums, man, it stormed that night man with them children sang, man, I'm telling you, they brought the house down.

- So now have you ever recorded before?
- I recorded a couple of songs, I have, I have.
- Okay, got some of that in your mind to do in the future?
- I do.
- Okay.

- Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church.
- And you've been there how?
- 25 years this month.
- Yeah and you told me that your wife passed a couple of years ago.
- Two years ago.
- Wow and certainly my prayers are with you.

- Know it's a hard thing trying to recover from that.
- It is.
- But God is, huh?
- He's able.
- I'm trying to tell you, how long- - He gives me strength.
- How long were y'all married?
- 35 years.
- Wow, wow, children?
- Yeah, three grown children.
- Three grown, they gone?
- Grown, but we got one that's lingering, but the other two are grown.
- So they're grown and you say they're gone, right?
- They gone.
- Well, what did I see coming back your way?

They have revitalized a whole community when he went there, I think he started there somewhere in the nineties, maybe, no, in the eighties and they just transformed that whole community.
Great ministry going on there and I heard through the grapevine he's a great singer too, that's exactly right.

- Well, they've got a Porky's up there, it's pretty good.

So did you get down on your knees when you proposed to him?

- Well, I got a job offer off in another state and we was dating and he went with me up there to visit where we was gonna get a house at.
- Get that mic up a little bit 'cause we wanna hear this.
- And I told him, I says, he says, "Well, this is a nice house, I really like this one for us."
And I says, "Us?
You're not moving up here unless we get married."
And he said, "Well, okay, let's get married."
Well, I turned down the job offer a month later.
