Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(soft piano music plays) - Is that the one you thought she was having...?
- Arching.
- Oh, she was arching.
- Are you telling Marj that?
- [Dr. Sarah Allen] I was interested in Marine mammals and it was a very male dominated field when I was young, and this was in the seventies.
So it was a different world then.
I was mostly the only woman in my program, now it's mostly women.
(laughs) (violin music plays) - It's got a green tag.
- One whose head is facing us?
There's one, two that's got a green tag.
- Over here.
- [Sarah Coddie] People like Sarah really paved the way for us.
And then for my generation, I don't have any issues.
Yet.
(laughs) Here at Point Reyes as the Marine ecologist my main role is studying the elephant seals and monitoring how they're using Point Reyes.
- It's a flipper tag.
- [Sarah Coddie] Those tags on the flippers allows us to track the individuals throughout their lives.
I knew about an internship at Point Reyes National Seashore doing harbor seal monitoring under Dr. Sarah Allen.
Meeting Dr. Allen just opened up a whole new world.
- [Dr. Sarah Allen] And I got right away that she loved elephant seals.
She was a natural.
I put my effort into mentoring her because I wanted her to stay.
- [Sarah Coddie] We have this shared passion for the ocean.
We love coming out here together.
You know, our nickname is Sarah squared 'cause we're both Sarah.
When we need to tag the weaning pups we might need to kind of wiggle our way through the harem to get to the weaning pups.
They're wild animals.
So they are definitely dangerous.
- [Dr. Sarah Allen] She's a little shy.
She kind of reminds me of, my younger self.
She is not sure how amazing she is.
- [Sarah Coddie] Dr. Allen just really took me under her wing and really mentored me.
And I'm training the younger generation like Marjorie.
Who's my field assistant, counting how many seals are out there?
Marjorie.
You want to go right?
- [Marjorie Cox] So am I okay to go up there?
- [Dr. Sarah Allen] Go for it.
- [Marjorie Cox] Our team here is largely female and it's pretty exciting that we're kind of leading the way now.
Uh-oh here comes the other guy - [Sarah Coddie] Watch out.
- [Dr. Sarah Allen] Uh-oh, he's in trouble.
- [Marjorie Cox] Oh he's mad.
- [Sarah Coddie] Oh, he's backing down already.
Oh my God.
This is so exciting.
I haven't seen a fight all season.
- [Dr. Sarah Allen] Okay.
We've got to get out of the way - [Sarah Coddie] Look how tall they get.
- [Dr. Sarah Allen] Oh,this is a good fight.
That was fun, wasn't it?
You don't see that very often.
