The SC Army National Guard dates back to 1670 and was reorganized into the current National Guard system in 1903 when it was renamed the SC National Guard. The South Carolina Army National Guard was originally formed in 1670.
The Militia Act of 1903 organized the present National Guard system in each state.
The organized militia was renamed the South Carolina National Guard in 1905.
The conversion came just in time for South Carolinians to participate in the campaign on the Mexican border in 1916 and in World War I.
After the end of World War II, The Army would undergo a major reorganization, providing South Carolina with its own Air National Guard.
Currently, the South Carolina National Guard's role is to respond to civil disturbances or provide manpower when natural disasters struck, such as Hurricane Hugo in 1989 or the 1000 Year Flood in 2015.
