I don't think there are any bad kids I mean there there are children who behave in ways that we wish they wouldn't um but what is really important to is to get at the root cause of behavior um school is about learning it's learning academics but it's also about learning how to behave um that's what discipline really is Right a multi-tier system of support is really a tool or a framework that schools use to basically plan out how they will support all students so there are certain things that schools can do to uh universally support the school so there prevention and building relationships are usually a big part of that um if in a community there is a a bigger proportion of a particular issue you might address that universally for all kids because you know that's going to be a bigger uh a likelihood of being a bigger issue so for example drug use there's a lot of issues with um uh um Fentanyl and what have you so you might universally talk about that because you want all kids to know about it um likewise with like suicide prevention um then um knowing that there are going to be some kids who are particularly at risk you can create supports that are more uh targeted um for those who are more um at risk so there might be other special programs that that are designed for them um or implemented for them rather um and then there are going to most likely be a smaller group of students who are needing more intensive supports but oftentimes there reasons for behaviors and it's really important to understand why so it's not just the teacher um but ideally it's a community of staff and and also the family being able to reach out to a family and to um reach out and understand and I I think one thing that I haven't mentioned about a positive School climate is um it's part of that engagement area of relationships it's really important to have strong relationships between the teachers students and families so it's really important to not just communicate with families when there's a problem and especially when you know when a student is having a hard time or has historically had a hard time when you see a student doing something well it's really great to read reach out to the family to be able to say your your child has done this really well today so everybody is feeling that it gives confidence to the student it gives confidence to the family it creates more of a positive interactions with the school and then when you have moments of struggle it's easier to be able to open that door and to Think Through the strengths of the student and then what what they need to learn to to be able to get the skills they need and and just so that they can be successful right so they can focus on school they can focus on having good relationships with their peers and good relationships with their staff I think it's really important for a school as a strategy and I've seen the many examples of this and I just have found it to be quite powerful is when you uh a school can look at all their students and say for each student is there an adult who knows this child right if there is a student that that is not connected to an adult then it's time to find how you can make a connection to that student so School climate is about thinking about how to create a good environment for everybody if you create a good environment for everybody there's going to be less of a chance that they're going to be some kids who are needing more assistance um because they will have had a positive relationship and some of that would be prevented but School climate should be ideally implemented within a multier system of support where in addition to understanding the school climate um the school can identify what other supports are needed for all so that all students have what they need to be successful visit us online at ideast stream.org welcome for more web extras links to resources and to watch the documentary you are welcome creating safe and supportive schools a production of idea stream public media
