The ruling shields similar laws in more than 20 states, including Kentucky.
In the 6 to 3 decision, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for a conservative majority that the law does not violate the Constitution's Equal Protection Clause, which requires the government to treat similarly situated people the same.
The Family Foundation, a Christian conservative group in Kentucky, applauded today's decision.
Meanwhile, the ACLU of Kentucky called today's ruling a, quote, painful setback.
We believe this is a historic victory for families, for children, and for common sense, and certainly are thrilled by the emphatic decision, 6 to 3, to uphold Tennessee's law that simply just protects kids from being chemically or physically mutilated.
You know, it affirms, Kentucky's law as well.
And 25 states that have passed similar laws to protect kids from these, from these harmful gender transitions.
So we view today is a is a big day, and it's the first time the US Supreme Court has kind of directly address this issue head on.
And so, we think this is a, a victory that should be celebrated by anyone that, values the rule of law, values the authority of state legislatures to protect kids, and really values common sense.
We reject the idea that this is any kind of care, certainly not medical.
And I think this is where we just have to get back and have an honest, frank conversation.
It is not possible for a man to become a woman or a woman to become a man.
It's certainly not possible for a boy to become a girl or a girl to become a boy.
I think that, part of the thing that's been really disturbing about attacks on trans youth and, attacks on transgender people more broadly is that the laws that, the Kentucky state legislature, other legislatures around the country have been considering are designed to attempt to erase transgender people from existence.
So, you know, we know that transgender people have always do now and will continue to exist.
We know that the families of the transgender youth and the parents of those youth that we represent here in Kentucky have gone through years of therapy.
They have gone through consultations with medical doctors, and they've been prescribed these treatments.
We know that the American Medical Association and others have done testing and have said time and time again that gender dysphoria is real and that therapies like hormones, like puberty blockers are critical in life saving care for transgender youths.
We here today are standing on the right side.
In 2023, Kentucky's Republican dominated state legislature passed a law similar to that Tennessee law at issue today.
Senate Bill 150, among other things, banned minors from accessing hormone therapies and gender transitioning surgeries.
