A Seattle art exhibit is pushing traditional boundaries and welcoming visitors to go against the norm.
That's where we find arts and culture editor at large, Brandon Davis, who takes us on a tour inside a unique show that's more than what meets the eye.
(upbeat music) - Most art galleries and museums have a strict policy, do not touch the art.
But in a new show here at Arts at King Street Station, they not only allow you to touch the art they encourage you to do so.
Let's check it out.
(upbeat music) The exhibit is called Please Touch.
I explored it with James Coley from the Office of Arts and Culture, and Barbara Oswald, a curator, artist, and disability rights advocate.
Oswald's idea was to create a meaningful gallery experience for blind and low vision visitors.
And touching these highly tactile artworks is fun regardless of vision, ability.
So here we are at Big Shrimp by Peter Van Zanden, and I have to say, I'm still very nervous about touching the art.
- You know, one of the problems is we have a cultural norm that is about don't touch.
But I guarantee you, if you want to touch Big Shrimp, you're not gonna break it.
And what you want to do is use an open palm.
You want to try?
- Yes, I definitely want to try.
- We have that expectation of how we treat art in this society.
And I think one of the things that this exhibition does so powerfully is ask us to add another sense to our experience of art.
(upbeat music) - Through her nonprofit revision arts, Oswald has coordinated various additions of Please Touch for 10 years.
This time the show features a new edition, stage costumes from big local productions.
- You can go to a play and you can hear it audio described, but do you really know?
What do those costumes really look like?
What do they feel like?
And this one's really interesting to touch.
- Everyone sitting in the seats is so far away, you have no idea the detail.
So I was excited to see this one.
- In some ways, it also brings you closer to the actor and or the artist, right as well.
Their process, their sensations of being in the costume or making that work of art.
- There's also braille for each piece in the show and audio.
(upbeat music) - [Narrator] Worn by the character Judg.. in the Fifth Avenue's production of "Sweeney Top."
- [Reporter] Sighted visitors can experience visual art in a new way too, by putting on a sleep shade and encountering the art with their hands.
(upbeat music) - The texture of it, the feeling of.. is a whole different experience.
- And one of the things about the show, obviously, is please touch the art, but tell us about the wider message in terms of accessibility, - Revision arts, its mission is Art for all, and that means inclusive for people who have multiple challenges.
The reality of it is, is trying to figure out how do we make a show that is accessible in all ways?
- Please Touch runs now through January 4th, and Oswald hopes it has a lasting impact, convincing more galleries to add accessible art to more shows.
(upbeat music) - For high school seniors looking for scholarships, The Jackie Robinson Foundation is offering generous four year scholarships and comprehensive support services to highly motivated college students with financial needs.
