I'M GOING TO THROW IT BACK TO CATHY.
>> Cathy: SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS BECAUSE IF YOU -- -- IF YOU'VE GONE O THE AG/HORT BUILDING -- JILL IS A CHAMPION IS IT SEED ART OR CROP ART?
>> IT'S CROP ART.
>> Cathy: OOH, CROP ART, OKAY.
>> YES.
>> Cathy: SO JILL HAS PUT TOGETHER BEAUTIFUL CROP ART DISPLAYS.
AND SHE TAUGHT ME HOW.
AND THANK YOU FOR DOING THAT.
>> OH, E HAD SO MUCH FUN, CATHY.
>> Cathy: HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN DOING CROP ART?
>> I GOT INTO CROP ART WHEN I MOVED TO MINNESOTA AND I WAS TRYING TO FIND A WAY TO ACCLIMATE.
AND ALL HE RAGE, AND SO I HAVE A BACKGROUND IN ART AND DECIDED TO START MAKING CROP ART.
>> Cathy: YOU WERE VERY KIND TO SIT WITH ME AND WALK ME THROUGH THE FIRST STAGES OF STARTING A CROP ART PIECE AND I HAVE TO SAY WHEN YOU SHOWED ME LITTLE BITS OF AMARANTH AND THESE TINY TINY SEEDS I THOUGHT, JILL, WHAT THE HECK?
HOW DID YOU WORK WITH THESE SMALL SEEDS?
>> WELL, THERE ARE LOTS OF DIFFERENT WAYS YOU CAN WORK WITH THE SMALL SEEDS.
YOU CAN PUT THEM DOWN ONE -- AT A TIME WHICH -- THERE IS A TECHNIQUE, CATHY, IT'S VERY TECHNICAL TECHNIQUE THAT CROP ARTISTS USE CALLED GLUE AND DUMP.
[ LAUGHTER ] AND YOU -- OVER EVENLY -- MOD PODGE.
but you can use Elmer's glue and spread them evenly and then dump them.
>> Cathy: I kind of did that.
>> It looks so good, Cathy.
Before i show you all what I did on my summer vacation, I went up to the ag/hort building, did you win a ribbon this year?
>> I did.
>> Cathy: CONGRATULATIONS.
>> thank you so much.
[ Applause ] >> I was so blown away by some of the art that's up there this year.
how do they -- Do you dye the seeds or is that all natural?
>> There are different -- this year I tried dyeing but a lot of those seeds are either dyed or painted.
>> okay and what are judges looking for?
>> I think they're looking for something that reads really well, just visually and also a lot of times the judges want something that connects back to Minnesota.
>> Cathy: Okay.
>> And that is, that can be part of the criteria.
Although I am not a judge, so.
>> Cathy: Okay.
>> Yes.
>> Cathy: Something that connects to Minnesota you say.
>> Yes, I do.
And kids perhaps have something that connects to Minnesota.
>> Cathy: I did this on my summer vacation.
This is the MPR listening loon.
[ cheers and applause ] >> Yay!
Look at that!
>> Cathy: All right, audiences, you've seen this on the tote bag, okay.
This reminds me of a grade school art project, Jill, I have to be honest with you, but at least I did it.
So thank you for walking me through.
WHEN YOU MAKE, WHEN YOU SUBMIT A PIECE FOR THE STATE FAIR THROUGH THE CROP ART COMPETITION, IT NEEDS TO BE SOMETHING THAT'S GROWN HERE IN THE STATE OF MINNESOTA.
SO I LOVE THAT, I LOVE LEARNING ABOUT THE SEEDS AND THEN I LOVE LEARNING ABOUT THE SEEDS THAT YOU SHOULDN'T USE BECAUSE THEY MAY BE INVASIVE OR DETRIMENTAL TO THE STATE.
SO I LIKE LEARNING ABOUT THAT AND THEN I JUST, THE CROP ART COMMUNITY IS VERY, IT'S A VERY HUMBLE AND WELCOMING AND FRIENDLY GROUP.
SO I LOVE THAT PIECE TOO.
>> CATHY: JILL MOE, I THINK YOU'RE A TERRIFIC TEACHER.
I SO APPRECIATE YOU WALKING ME THROUGH ON MY JOURNEY.
>> OH, I'M SO PROUD OF YOU, CATHY.
IT LOOKS GREAT.
>> CATHY: OH.
THANK YOU.
>> YES, SOMEBODY'S GOING TO BE VERY LUCKY TO WIN THIS.
>> CATHY: OKAY,
