Burdened with slow federal action, King County health officials are scrambling to get a limited supply of monkeypox vaccines to those at risk.
King County health officials estimate about 40,000 people are at risk for contracting the disease, but so far they only have vaccines for about a 10th of that number.
The vaccines have been so difficult to find that some have been traveling to British Columbia for their shots.
Some believe that the lackluster national response is directly related to homophobia, as the highest risk populations for monkeypox are men who have sex with men, especially those who have multiple partners.
In the past several weeks, Public Health Seattle and King County has been making an effort to expand outreach to queer spaces and places where people of color feel more comfortable getting the vaccine.
