WE NEED TO BE RESULT ORIENTED AND WE WILL BE.
THERE'S A LOT OF EXPECTATION THAT WE PLACE ON OURSELVES AS WE SHOULD.
AND SO, THE LAST R IS RESILIENCE.
THE BEST THING IS TO TELL OUR TRUE STORY, THAT'S, WE ARE A GREAT SET OF SCHOOLS, A GREAT CITY AND A GREAT STATE.
WE DO HAVE OUR CHALLENGES AND THERE'S WORK TO BE DONE.
>> THE EDUCATION MEETING, THEY WERE GRANTED -- THEY MET WITH JOHNSON IN PERSON TO DISCUSS THE DISTRICT'S FUTURE.
>> DECIDED TO COME TO TULSA IN ORDER TO ONE, MEET ME IN PERSON AND ALSO NOT ONLY LAY OUT EXPECTATIONS, BUT THEN ALSO OFFER SUPPORT FOR WHAT THE EXPECTATIONS WOULD LOOK LIKE.
HE REASSURED THE PUBLIC SCHOOL THAT HE'S HERE, IN ORDER TO SEE US, MEETING THE GOALS THAT WE HAVE OUTLINES TO MEET FOR THE STUDENTS.
OVERALL -- >> IN THE LAST MEETING, HE WAS CALLING FOR QUITE AT A BIT OF CHANGE IN A SHORT COUPLE OF MONTHS.
DO YOU THINK THAT'S REASONABLE OR DOABLE FOR THE SCHOOL DISTRICT?
>> WE'VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO COMMUNICATE, THE THREE EXPECTATIONS THIS WERE LINED OUT.
CENTERED AROUND INTERNAL STROLL AND THE FISCAL RESPONSIBILITIES, COUPLED WITH ENSURING THAT OUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AROUND THE SCIENCE OF READING IS KNOWN AND UNDERSTOOD.
AND THE CORRECTIVE ACTION OF THE SCHOOLS THAT HAVE NOT SEEN -- WE HAVE DISCUSSED THOSE LEVELS OF EXPECTATIONS.
AND IN ADDITION TO THAT, I WOULD SAY IT COMES TO THE TIME LINE, WE DIDN'T SOLIDIFY THE ACTUAL TIME LINE OF THE RESULTS NEED TO BE.
BUT THERE WAS COMMUNICATION AROUND, WE NEED TO MOVE.
>> SHE HAS HER OWN EXPECTATIONS FOR THE LARGEST DISTRICT IN THE STATE.
>> DIGGING DEEPER IN THE LITERACY PIECE IT'LL BE DOUBLING DOWN ON THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THE TEACHERS ARE GETTING.
AND TO MAKE SURE THEY'RE CERTIFIED TEACHERS, THE NOVICE TEACHERS ARE GETTING MORE SUPPORT FOR UNDERSTANDING THE SCIENCE OF READING AND KNOWING HOW TO SUPPORT STUDENTS WHO ARE DEMONSTRATING STRUGGLES.
>> JOHNSON IS NO STRANGER TO MAKING CHANGES FOR THE DISTRICT.
IN 2017, SHE OVERSAW KEY INITIATIVES IN A DECREASE OF OUT OF SCHOOL SUSPENSIONS.
SHE WORKS TO GET THE DISTRICT BACK ON TRACK, WALTERS TESTIFIED IN WASHINGTON, DC LAST WEEK, REGARDING THE VIEW THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT HAS INFLUENCE IN THE AMERICAN CLASSROOM.
>> TULSA PUBLIC SCHOOLS NAMED IN THE REPORT, MY STAFF DILIGENTLY SKUKTED A -- DISCOVERED A DISTURBING CONNECTION.

THE LEGISLATURE PASSED AND THE GOVERNOR SIGNED LEGISLATION ALLOWING UTILITY COMPANIES THE CHANCE TO SPREAD THE BILLIONS IN FUEL COSTS OVER 20 YEARS OR LONGER.
SO RATEPAYERS WOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY OVERSIZED BILLS ONCE OKLAHOMA BEGAN DEFROSTING FROM THE WINTER WEATHER.
IN A DISSENTING OPINION ON A RECENT RATE CASE FOR OKLAHOMA NATURAL GAS.OKLAHOMA CORPORATION COMMISSIONER BOB ANTHONY SAYS RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMERS ARE BEING RIPPED OFF.
>> IN THE 35 YEARS THAT I'VE BEEN A COMMISSIONER, THE LARGEST FLEECING OF UTILITY CONSUMERS AND RATEPAYERS HAS BEEN THIS WINTER STORM URI IN FEBRUARY OF 2021.
>> ANTHONY SAYS THERE ARE MAJOR COST OVERRUNS AND A LACK OF OVERSIGHT IN HOW THE BONDS ARE BEING HANDLED.

AND SO THE LEGISLATURE COULD VOTE TO DO IT, THE GOVERNOR COULD CALL IT, LET'S GET IT DONE.
>> THE CHAIRMAN OF THE OKLAHOMA CORPORATION COMMISSION, TODD HIETT, FEELS ANTHONY COULD BE MISINTERPRETING THE SPECIFIC LEGISLATION WHICH DIRECTED THE COMMISSION'S APPROACH TO A "SO-CALLED" AUDIT.
>> THIS AUDIT AS REQUIRED BY STATUTE, IS AN AUDIT OF THE BOND PAYMENTS.

>> NOW, I HAVE WELCOMED, AS A MATTER OF FACT, CLOSE TO A YEAR AGO, I, I TALKED TO OUR, OUR STATE AUDITOR ABOUT POTENTIALLY DOING AN AUDIT BECAUSE COMMISSIONER ANTHONY WAS RAISING MAJOR CONCERNS AT THAT TIME.
AND I CERTAINLY WOULD WELCOME AN AUDIT TO, TO ASSURE THAT THE CORPORATION COMMISSION HAS DONE EVERYTHING CORRECTLY.

THEY HAVE BEEN VERY, VERY HELPFUL IN GIVING ME ACTUAL DOCUMENTS OF WHAT THEY PAID.
AND THEN I HAD TO WORK TO GET THE DOCUMENTS FROM AN R F P TO SEE WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN PAID.
AND THEY'RE NOT THE SAME POLITELY.

THE SUPREME COURT CHALLENGES THAT COMMISSIONER ANTHONY AND SOME OF HIS COHORTS BROUGHT AGAINST THE BONDS AT THE SUPREME COURT, IT'S ABOUT $850 MILLION, JUST, JUST BETWEEN THE INTEREST COST AND THE DELAY AT THE SUPREME COURT, THAT WAS ABOUT 850 MILLION.
>> INTEREST RATES HAD DOUBLED BY THE TIME THE OKLAHOMA SUPREME COURT GAVE THE "GO AHEAD" TO ISSUE THE BONDS, NEARLY TWO YEARS AFTER WINTER STORM URI HIT.
>> AT THE TIME WHEN WE WERE DISCUSSING SECURITIZATION BACK IN THE LATE SPRING SUMMER OF 21 INTEREST RATES, IT APPEARED THAT WE COULD GET IN THE TWOS AND SUDDENLY THEY CONTINUED TO RISE THROUGH 22.
AND BY THE TIME OF ISSUANCE, WE ENDED UP IN, WELL, IN SOME CASES IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE IT WAS 4.5%.
>> ANTHONY SAYS THE CORPORATION COMMISSION SHIRKED ITS DUTY WHEN IT APPROVED THE SECURITIZATION OF THE FUEL COSTS.AND THE RATEPAYERS DESERVE BETTER.

THIS WEEK, I SPOKE WITH DR. NADINE GARCIA ABOUT OKLAHOMA'S OBESITY RATE-- WHICH IS THE 3RD HIGHEST IN THE NATION.
>> DR. NADINE GARCIA, PRESIDENT AND CEO FOR THE TRUST FOR AMERICA'S HEALTH.
WHAT ARE THE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO OKLAHOMA BEING THE SECOND MOST OVERWEIGHT STATE IN THE NATION AND THE THIRD MOST OBESE?
>> OBESITY IS A COMPLEX DISEASE, AND THERE ARE MULTIPLE FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO OBESITY.
IT'S ACTUALLY FACTORS BEYOND JUST GENETICS AND, AND INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOR.
IT REALLY MUCH OF IT HAVING TO DEAL WITH SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC AND STRUCTURAL FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO OBESITY.
WHEN WE LOOK AT ISSUES LIKE POVERTY OR FINANCIAL HARDSHIPS FOR FAMILIES WHERE THEY'RE LIVING PAYCHECK TO PAYCHECK, TO BE ABLE TO AFFORD HEALTHY AND NUTRITIOUS FOODS.
>> SO THEN OKLAHOMA'S NOT DOING A GOOD JOB IN PROVIDING SOME OF THOSE THINGS?
>> CERTAINLY OKLAHOMA AS WELL AS STATES ACROSS THE NATION ARE, ARE FACING AND SEEING RISING RATES OF OBESITY AMONG ADULTS AS WELL AS AMONG CHILDREN.
.THERE'S PROGRESS THAT HAS BEEN MADE, BUT THE PART OF THE CHALLENGE IS REALLY FUNDING AND INVESTING IN PROVEN OBESITY PREVENTION PROGRAMS THAT WE KNOW WORK.
FOR EXAMPLE, THE NUTRITION SUPPORT PROGRAMS LIKE THE WOMEN INFANTS CHILDREN'S PROGRAM, WHICH HAS SHOWN TO ACTUALLY REDUCE OBESITY AMONG CHILDREN.
THE PERCENTAGE OF KIDS WHO ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THAT PROGRAM, MANY MORE KIDS ACTUALLY COULD BE PARTICIPATING IN THAT PROGRAM WHO AREN'T.
AND SO WE NEED TO WORK ON, FOR EXAMPLE, REDUCING THOSE KIND OF ADMINISTRATIVE HURDLES AND BARRIERS THAT MANY FAMILIES FACE TO BEING ABLE TO ACCESS THOSE TYPES OF PROGRAMS.
>> DR. GARCIA, BEFORE WE GO ANY FURTHER, JUST DEFINE OBESITY FOR US AND, AND HOW MANY AMERICANS ARE CONSIDERED OBESE?
>> AN INDIVIDUAL'S BODY FAT AND THEIR BODY DIS, FAT DISTRIBUTION IS, IS HIGHER THAN WHAT'S CONSIDERED A, A HEALTHY LEVEL.
NOW THIS ISN'T REALLY ABOUT BODY SIZE, BUT IT'S REALLY ABOUT UNDERSTANDING HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT?
AND, AND BY UTILIZING THAT INDEX, WHICH IS UNIVERSALLY AVAILABLE IN SCREENING, IT HELPS GIVE AN UNDERSTANDING AS A POPULATION HEALTH MEASURE, HOW DO YOU DIRECT RESOURCES, WHAT TYPES OF STRATEGIES THAT YOU WOULD USE FOR OBESITY PREVENTION?

ARE YOU A, A PROPONENT OF THOSE AS A, AS A WAY TO COMBAT OBESITY?

WHAT ABOUT THE INDIVIDUAL?
I MEAN, THERE HAS TO BE SOME PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY IN THIS AS WELL?
>> THERE ARE MULTIPLE FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO OBESITY, MANY THAT ARE BEYOND PERSONAL CHOICE.
AND YES, WE CAN ALL TAKE MEASURES TO HAVE ACTIVE HEALTHY LIVES, WHETHER THAT'S, YOU KNOW, HEALTHY NUTRITIOUS DIETS AS WELL AS ENGAGING IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.
BUT WHEN YOU SEE THESE TYPES OF INCREASING RATES OF OBESITY ACROSS POPULATION GROUPS THAT HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR DECADES, THERE ARE STRUCTURAL AND SYSTEMIC BARRIERS THAT WE ALSO NEED TO ADDRESS.
>> MAKING HEALTHY SCHOOL MEALS, FOR EXAMPLE, ACCESSIBLE FOR ALL STUDENTS, MAKING THAT PERMANENT POLICY LOOKING AT EXPANDING, FOR EXAMPLE, ACCESS TO HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE WHERE FAR TOO MANY PEOPLE, MILLIONS STILL DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE OR EXPANDING MEDICAID.
THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA, JUST IN IN THE PAST TWO YEARS, EXPANDED MEDICAID, INCREASING ACCESS TO COVERAGE.

THE BOX OF TEN ITEMS OF EVIDENCE, IN BETWEEN THE TWO TRIALS.
WHY DO WE ALLOW THAT TO HAPPEN.
NO ONE FILED CHARGES BY PEOPLE WHO MISPLACED OR DESTROYED THE EVIDENCE.
ONE OF THE PROSECUTORS HAD A WITNESS CHANGE TESTIMONY IN ORDER TO REFLECT EXACTLY WHAT THE NARRATIVE WAS.
IN HIS CASE, IT'S OBVIOUS AND WE HAVE PROOF OF ALL OF IT, THE COURT LOOKS AT IT AND SAYS, THERE'S NOTHING TO SEE HERE.
IF THIS CASE IS INEFFECTIVE, THERE COULD BE OTHER CASES.
IN OKLAHOMA, IT SEEMS ONCE YOU GO THROUGH THE PROCESS, IT'S VERY DIFFICULT TO GET OUT.
>> I WANT YOU TO SPEAK MORE TO THAT.
WHY THAT IS HAPPENING.
>> I THINK OUR LEGAL SYSTEM FEELS LIKE IF THEY ADMIT GUILT AT ANY POINT AND TIME, AND STAND UP AND SAY, YOU KNOW WHAT, WE HAD SOMEONE BACK THEN INEFFECTIVE OR WILLING TO LIE TO GET A CONVICTION OR TWIST THE TRUTH, IF WE STAND UP AND SAY THAT, THAT MAKES THE LEGAL SYSTEM FAULTED.
MY BELIEF IS, IF YOU STAND UP AND ADMIT WHEN YOU DID GO WRONG AND CORRECT IT, THERE'S MORE TRUST AND FAITH IN THE LEGAL SYSTEM.
I HAVE VERY LITTLE FAITH IN THE LEGAL SYSTEM AT THIS POINT, I HAVE SEEN SO MANY TIMES THE COURT SAYS, THERE'S NOTHING TO SEE HERE.
THERE'S ENOUGH EVIDENCE ON THE WAY TO PROVE IN THE CASE, WE KNOW HE DIDN'T COMMIT THE MURDER, FOR INSTANCE.
GUILTY OF COERCION?
YES, HE COULD HAVE BEEN GUILTY OF A FEW THINGS LIKE THAT, BUT MURDER HE IS NOT GUILTY OF.
FOR SOME REASON, IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE WE'LL GIVE SOMEONE LIFE IN PRISON WHO ACTUALLY COMMITTED THE MURDER FOR TESTIFYING AGAINST SOMEONE ELSE.
>> HOW DO WE ENHURE THE RIGHTS -- ENSURE THE RIGHTS OF THE INNOCENTED VICTIMS -- >> IT'S COMPLICATED BUT YOU HOPE A LEGITIMATE CHALLENGE TO THE CONVICTION, THE PEOPLE MOST COMMUNICATING WITH THE VICTIM'S FAMILIES -- THE PROSECUTORS.
AND YOU HOPE THEY HAVE ENOUGH ENCOURAGE TO ADMIT THAT MAYBE THEY GOT IT WRONG.
BUT THAT'S TYPICALLY NOT WHAT WE SEE.
IT'S VERY DIFFICULT FOR VICTIM'S FAMILIES.
WE HAVE A POLICY THAT WE DON'T REACH OUT.
IF WE REACH OUT, WE SIMPLY -- IT'S ON THE STATE.
AS REPRESENTATIVE MENTIONED, NOBODY IS WILLING TO MAKE THEY MADE A MISTAKE, ALL OF WHICH THE VICTIM'S -- OFTEN THE VICTIM'S FAMILY MEMBERS ARE LEFT TO BELIEVE SOMEONE'S GUILT, EVEN IF THE EVIDENCE SHOWS IT'S UNLIKELY THE PERSON COMMITTED THE CRIME.
>> THAT'S THE CASE IN THE CASE.
TWO OTHER DEATH PENALTY CASES, ON DEATH ROW AND EXONERATED BECAUSE OF DNA EVIDENCE.
THE VICTIMS OF THE MURDERED PERSON, THEY WERE ANGRY AT THE TWO INDIVIDUALS.
THEY WANTED TO SEE THEM PUT TO DEATH.
AND ALL OF A SUDDEN, THEY FIND OUT FOR A FACT THEY'RE NOT GUILTY.
THAT CHANGES, RIGHT?
THEY'RE SO THANKFUL NOW THEY DIDN'T SEE THEM PUT TO DEATH.
IN THE CASE, IT'S ALMOST LIKE THE STATE DOUBLED DOWN AND IT'S UNFAIR TO THE FAMILY, THE VICTIM'S FAMILY TO CONTINUE THIS LIE WHEN YOU KNOW THERE'S EVIDENCE TO BACK UP THAT THEY SHOULD NOT BE ON DEATH ROW IN THE FIRST PLACE.
THEY WENT TO THE HEARING, THE DA COUNSEL HAD A NUMBER OF SET UP, TO SAY, HE'S GUILTY, THERE'S NOTHING TO SEE HERE.
THAT CAUSES MORE TRAUMA TO THE FAMILY THAN ANYTHING ELSE.
IT'S A FINE LINE YOU HAVE TO WALK.
YOU WANT THE FAMILY TO HAVE REPRESENTATION.
BUT WANT THEM TO FULLY UNDERSTAND AND NOT LIED TO.
>> TELL US OF THE BILLION INTRODUCED LAST SESSION, AND HOW DO YOU SEE THAT GOING FORWARD TO BE VOTED ON IN THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE.

THE REASON IS, THE CONVICTION UNIT SAYS THAT IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH EVIDENCE TO GO TO OUTSIDE COUNSEL AND LET THEM DO A THIRD PARTY INVESTIGATION, WE DID THAT WITH RICHARD.
WE ACTUALLY, I DIDN'T HIRE BUT THEY VOLUNTEERED THEIR TIME OVER A MILLION DOLLARS OF TIME AND EFFORTS IN THE LAW FIRM, AND THEY DID THE INVESTIGATIVE WORK THAT NO ONE HAD DONE BEFORE OTHER THAN THE DEFENSE TEAM.
BUT I DIDN'T WANT TO TAKE THEIR WORD FOR IT.
WHEN WE INITIATED THIS, I WANT YOU TO TELL ME, IS HE GUILTY, I'LL STAND WITH THAT, AND HE'S NOT GUILTY, I WANT TO KNOW.
AND THE THIRD PARTY CAME OUT AND CAME BACK WITH A 350 PAGE REPORT AND IT WENT TO THE COURTS AND IN FACT, IT WENT THROUGH TWO AG'S, THEY IGNORED IT.
FINALLY THE THIRD AG, I TOLD HIM, PLEASE, PERSONALLY LOOK INTO THIS.
THE FIRST TIME WE MET WITH HIM ON THIS CASE, HE WALKED IN AND SAID, I KNOW HIS GUILTY BUT I'M HERE TO LISTEN.
THAT'S ALL I'VE ASKED.
HE HIRED HIS OWN THIRD PARTY NEFRTH AND CAME BACK -- INVESTIGATOR AND CAME BACK WITH THE SAME CONCLUSION WE DID.
YOU CAN'T TRUST THE FIRST TWO TRIALS.
THIS IS GREAT, WE HAVE THE AG OF OKLAHOMA, BUT IT GOES TO CRIMINAL COURT APPEALS, THEY THREW IT OUTLET.

THAT'S WHEN THE COUNSEL STOOD AGAINST IT, AND TRIED TO GET HIM PUT TO DEATH.
THANK GOD THEY FILED IT AND IT'S NOW BEFORE THE SUPREME COURT.
>> WHAT'S INTERESTING OF THE CASE, AND NOT DIFFERENT FROM A LOT OF OUR CASES, THE NEW EVIDENCE IS EVIDENCE THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN TURNED OVER OR HAPPENED IN THE FIRST PLACE.
TO MAKE SURE THE TESTIMONY WAS CONSISTENT.
THE BENEFIT HE'S GOTTEN IS THEY'VE GOTTEN ACCESS TO ALL OF THE INFORMATION FOR THIS THIRD PARTY REVIEW.
IN OUR CASES, MOST OF THE TIME WORRY NOT WORKING COOPERATIVELY WITH THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA AND WE'RE LOCKED OUT FROM THAT SORT OF EVIDENCE THAT COULD POSSIBLY, OR CREATE A SUBSTANTIAL CONSTITUTIONAL VIOLATION.
SO, WHAT HE'S GONE THROUGH IS NOT A TYPICAL LOT OF CASES WE SEE.
BUT MORE OF A SPOTLIGHT ON THE CASE, THAT'S A RECURRING THEME IN A LOT OF THE CASES.
AND IT'S A PROBLEM BECAUSE WE HAVE AN APPELLANT COURT WHO SEEMS UNWILLING TO RECOGNIZE THE PROSECUTION HAS A DUTY TO TURN OVER, SPECIFICALLY EVIDENCE THAT COULD BE HELPFUL TO THE DEFENSE.
IT'S A CONTINUING DUTY, IT GOES THROUGH POST CONVICTION.
AND WE'RE NOT GETTING THAT DISCLOSURE ON CASES THAT WE'RE LITIGATING.
IT'S A SUBSTANTIAL PROBLEM.
>> PART OF THE REASON THAT RICHARD HAS ACCESS TO THAT IS SIMPLY BROUGHT TO OUR ATTENTION TA LEGISLATOR, WE STOOD AND FOUGHT TO GET THE INFORMATION.
NOW THERE'S EYES ON IT.
THAT'S PART OF THE REASON THE DA'S OFFICE IS UPSET.
FOR OUR COURTS TO CORRECT THEMSELVES, THE LEGISLATOR DOESN'T HAVE TO GET INVOLVED AT ALL.
BUT WE HAVE AN ISSUE HERE, WE HAVE TO TAKE A STAND.

EITHER WAY, THOSE PEOPLE NEED HELP.
THEY NEED FINANCIAL HELP, SERVICES, MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELLING.
TO BE PUT THERE WHEN YOU DIDN'T DO ANYTHING IS A REAL PROBLEM.
THEY NEED A LOT OF HELP.
AND THERE'S ALSO THE POTENTIAL THAT AT SOME POINT OKLAHOMA WILL REVISE THE COMPENSATION STATUTES AND MOVE TO A MODEL SIMILAR TO WHAT THE STATE OF KANSAS HAS ADOPTED.
NOT ONLY MONETARY COMPENSATIONS, BUT ALSO PROVIDING MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS.

AND WE PHYSICALLY WALK THE GROUND AND TALK AND DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE -- DURING THE BATTLE.
AND WE GO THROUGH THE ENTIRE BATTLE TRYING TO ANALYZE THE DECISIONS THAT WERE MADE SO WE CAN LEARN WHAT GREAT DECISIONS WERE MADE.
AND WHAT ONES WERE NOT SO GREAT.
AND HOW COULD WE IMPROVE THAT.
>> SOMEONE SMART AND EDUCATED, THE TOPOGRAPHY IS KING.
TO ACTUALLY TOUCH AND GROUND AND ENVISION IT.
THIS VAST ARRAY OF ARMORED VEHICLES, THAT'S WHY WE'RE THERE.
WE'RE NOT TRYING TO REPLICATE, AND THE TRAINING AREA OF WHAT D DAY WAS LIKE, YOU CAN'T GET THAT.
>> THINKING ABOUT CERTAIN THINGS OF THE ASPECTS OF THE BRANCH I WANT TO GO IN TO, AND THE STUDIES I HAVE DONE IN THAT, WHAT COULD CHANGED FROM EITHER SIDE TO HAVE MADE THAT MORE SUCCESSFUL FOR THEM.
IT'S INTERESTING TO BE ON SITE, AND LOOK AROUND, WHAT WOULD I HAVE DONE IN THAT SITUATION.
>> THE CLASSROOM TWANG AND ONE OF THE -- TRAINING, AND ONE OF THE THINGS TALKED IN CLASS IS THE ACCESS OF RISK.
SO, I'VE HAD THE CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE WITH IT, THOSE MEN ON THE BOATS, HEADING TO THE BEACHES, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM KNEW WHAT THEY WERE FIGHTING FOR, AND THEY UNDERSTOOD THAT NOT EVERYONE WILL COME HOME.
IT'S REALLY ONLY IN MANY MOMENTS TODAY WE HAVE THAT UNBELIEVABLE GRACE THAT EVERYONE IS COMING HOME.
WE CAN REPLICATE A SMALL PORTION OF THAT IN THE CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT, I HAVE AN IMMENSE APPRECIATION OF WHAT EVERY SINGLE ONE ON -- EXPOSE THE PARTICIPANTS TO A GOOD BREATH OF EVERYTHING THAT WAS ABOUT D-DAY AND THE EVENTS LEADING UP AND SHORTLY FOLLOWING.
WE HAVE AN AGGRESSIVE TIME LINE, WE HAVE THE -- TO COMMISSION, AND LEADERS OF CHARACTER, AND I WANTED TO HIT EACH OF THOSE ASPECTS.
>> IT'S PUTTING IN PERSPECTIVE THE COST OF THAT INITIAL INVASION.
AND THE OVERALL COST OF WORLD WAR II ITSELF, PUT THE IT IN PERSPECTIVE FOR ME.
I'D LIKE TO THINK I'M READY TO GIVE A SACRIFICE LIKE THAT WHEN THE TIME COMES, BUT WE'LL NEVER REALLY KNOW.
SEEING THE SACRIFICE THEY MADE INSPIRE ME.
>> THE MOTTO IS KNOWLEDGE FOR DEFENSE.
AND I THINK THIS STAFF RIDE IS A PERFECT MATCH TO THAT MOTTO.
WE WENT TO NORMANDY TO LEARN TO BE BETTER DEFENDERS OF OUR NATION BUT THE WORK AND EFFORT THEY PUT IN, EVEN TO GET ON THE PLANE AND MOVING OVER THERE.
TO GAIN IS KNOWLEDGE AND LEARN TO HELP MAKE THEM BETTER LEADERS.
TO HELP IN THE DEFENSE OF OUR NATION.
