(joyous music) [Narrator] Even though Patriot forces were victorious in their fight for independence, what did it cost them?

From the Appalachians to the Caribbean to the Deep South, over 230,000 Americans, free and enslaved, served in the Continental Army.

An estimated 6,800 Americans were killed in action during the American Revolution, and an estimated 6,100 were wounded.

But the damage inflicted upon the nation didn't stop at the battles.

The war took a heavy toll on physical and mental health throughout the colonies as well.

For example, Faith Trumbull Huntington witnessed the Battle of Bunker Hill, causing her distress, which eventually led to her suicide.

During the revolution, over 100,000 people are estimated to have died from the smallpox epidemic, and over 17,000 American soldiers succumbed to sicknesses like typhus, typhoid, dysentery, and influenza.
