It's a really great band.
You have such comradery.
It's kinda fun just to see how well you guys know each other and that sort of unspoken respect that's at play.
Not just for you musicianship, but character, integrity, all that other stuff.
- I was thinking about this earlier today actually, and I was thinking like, what makes Shakewell work in that sense?
We literally have grown up together.
You know, we started this band when we're, what has it been?
12 years or something, you know.
So like, we've learned everything that we know now as a group, which has, I think pushed us in that way.
Where we're, you know, we're trying to bring something new to the table every time, and keep it fresh and keep each other inspired, because I think for a lot of us, for a long time, it was our main source of inspiration musically.
So it's kind of, we've just grown together, and I think that that comradery has blossomed out of just being together so much and being friends first.
And, you know, being musicians and in a band kind of as a bonus, (laughing) which is great.
- We all jammed together, well before we were like, let's make a band.
It was just like, just pure joy.
Like the first time I met Cove we were just playing, we just both happened to have acoustic guitars, 'cause we were 18, and that's what you do when you're 18.
You bring your acoustic guitar everywhere.
(laughing) That was well, that was years before we formed Shakewell, or did anything like that.
But that was kinda like a light bulb moment.
- Out of the gate, it was like wild horses out of the chute, and I thought bands like you guys put as much energy into one tune as some bands put in the whole night.
My sense is, whenever you guys play together, it's like, open all the gates.
I mean, it really feels like this is a huge relief, and a wonderful thing to be able to do together on a regular basis when you can.
- I mean, our chemistry on stage is just a reflection of our chemistry like in life.
Like we've, just to build on what we've been talking about, it's we've known each other for so long.
We don't just jam together, we hang out all the time.
Like, it's like Cove was saying.
- We help each other move.
That's how good of friends we are.
- Twice, three times, maybe.
- I mean yeah, like, we know each other's relatives.
Everything that is on stage is just a reflection of what we do day to day.
I mean, the chemistry we have runs deeper than just music.
And that's why I think it shows on stage.
- We're all in this together is, the best way to put it.
- For life.
- For life.
- For life, till death do us part.
- That's what the contract says, at least.
- It's on a napkin in the van, somewhere.
- Somewhere in the van, we may have sold that van.

And so you don't have to be the metronome.
And so you have so much freedom, and what happens as a result, because you guys listen to each other so deeply, is you have this elasticity of the time feel, so it can kind of breathe.
It's like a murmur of starlings, you know, where you guys are just suddenly the whole thing turns, you know, on a dime.
- Well, it takes a lot of trust, I think rhythmically, like you're saying, to allow everybody to have some kind of counterpoint or to all know where the rhythm should be at, instead of necessarily relying on one or two or three people to hold down the solid rhythm the whole time, which in some instances is exactly what's needed, but sometimes it could get stale or just as long as everybody trusts each other to kind of know where things are supposed to be at, then you have the liberty to deviate a little bit.
But you know, the essence of the rhythm is still there.
- That's one of my favorite parts about joining a group as a bass player, is slowly learning the drummer's fills and being able to catch him.
Like knowing, seeing that he's going to do this one thing, oh, I know what he's gonna do, I'm gonna hit right there with him.
That's one of the most fun things I think to do.
- We've played enough shows, enough five-hour gigs in dive bars all over the place to know that, you kind of have to be able to improvise.
And I think a lot of the time, some of our best stuff that we end up keeping in the set, is just an improv from one night.
And then the next time we get together, we talk about it.
We're like, remember that one part?
Oh, so sick.
- Never play it again.
(all laughing) - No no, then we spend the entire practice working on 10 seconds of music trying to remember exactly what the improv was.
- That isn't what you did.
Yes it is.
No it isn't.
- A lot of those parts are written live.
- The horn players like go talk to each other, try that.
And then they try it out and sometimes it sticks, yeah.
- And it goes for all of I think like we're all able to take those liberties of like, I'm gonna write a new part today, during this song.
- Part of the esprit de corps in this band has to do with that respect, but it also has to do with the depth of training and what you've done with that, and then how you bring to that table and let go of rules and regs and say, okay, what are we gonna build together?
- I honestly feel like it's the reverse of that with this group.
Like that I came from this really academic approach to playing music, and I was a teacher.
I was Josh's high school band teacher actually.
It's not really me, you know, influencing them with my experience that I brought to music, it was quite the opposite actually.
These guys influencing the way that I approached playing music much more over the last few years.
And you know, getting off the page completely, and not thinking about any kind of theory or not thinking about any kind of formula that you've been working on while you're playing, and to just really have the freedom to explore out of that has been awesome for me.

- The first time I went to that, I'll go back to that first rehearsal, like Nathan was dancing in the rehearsal.
I mean, he was like moving a lot, but for me, I just knew I had to like step a little bit into that role and move and take on a little bit more of that energy.
And some of it for me is catharsis too.
Like it's just getting it out.
You know, when we play it's just go.
- Ditto.
I echo that 100%.
Just moving, just even if it's just in your heel counting time a little heavier than you might normally, there's something so powerful about giving yourself a space to do that.
And let, just make noise.

It's so fun.
- Well said.
And you're such a dancer.
I mean you really are physical.
- You should thank him for bringing that up, Dylan.
- Yeah, you should see me dance outside of it, 'cause it's embarrassing.

Because everybody's got it, you're just more overt.
- Just let it out.
Just don't be so afraid.
Unbutton this a little bit.
(all laughing) - Well I was stunned when I found out you were the one who wrote the horn lines out for these guys.
- I do wanna say.
- All right, here's the qualifier.
- They're all of the songs that I did not, I inherited a couple of the early, like "Move In."
Those are all written before I was in the band.
But yeah, I mean, the rest of that is just pure, my genius.
Nobody else helps.
(all laughing) No, it's one thing to say you wrote everything, and it's like you can't put any one person's name on any one of these songs, because like we talked about, we all wrote a lot of this live, and like, yes, most of these songs have like an originator and like a primary driver behind their creation.
But like to say that I wrote all these horn lines is a, would be a discredit to like, Tanner.
And to you and to you Josh.
Earlier you mentioned the harmony, like the depth of harmony.
A lot of that comes from what Josh has brought to the table here, 'cause he's playing things I'm not hearing.
You've just got a really special ear.
And you can bring that to a live setting too, and add that kind of depth in the moment, which is so special and so phenomenal and so cool.
