CHRISTINE: And I'm Christine Louise.
We're producers at WETA and best friends.
JOHN: We love living in the DC area, but finding a place to live here can be tough.
CHRISTINE: So join us as we go house hunting and explore neighborhood options across the region.
JOHN: And find out what it would be like...
BOTH: If you lived here!
(doorbell) CHRISTINE: Today, we're here in Shaw, a neighborhood that has one of the most interesting and important histories in all of DC.
JOHN: So important in its history, architectural quality and diversity that in 1999 Shaw officially became the Shaw Historic District.
Today, Shaw has four Michelin star restaurants, tons of art, some of the best music in town and is now one of the hottest real estate markets in all of DC.
CHRISTINE: To help us out today, we're joined by realtor, Judy Cranford, who said if she had just one area of DC to show us it had to be Shaw.
JOHN: So Judy gets her wish, and we get to see Judy's three houses.
CHRISTINE: So we're all winners.
JOHN: Well that's until our listing price guessing game.
CHRISTINE: Game on, my friend.
JOHN: Game on.
(doorbell) CHRISTINE: Hi, Judy!
JUDY: Hello!
JOHN: Hi Judy!
JUDY: Welcome to Shaw.
Have you been to Shaw before?
JOHN: Oh yes.
CHRISTINE: We have.
JUDY: Okay, great.
Well, what I love about Shaw is that not only is it trendy, it respects what was here before.
You had Black Broadway, you had the Lincoln Theater, you had Howard Theater.
You had Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday.
JOHN: Ella!
JUDY: Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole.
JOHN: True.
CHRISTINE: Yeah.
JUDY: Which kind of brings us to this amazing community, which is Poet Place.
JOHN: So, tell us why this is named Poet Place?
JUDY: The developer took a stab to basically respect and celebrate the artistic history of Shaw.
You'll see this mural: they commissioned it just for this building, for this hallway.
So have fun!
CHRISTINE: Ah, I see what she means right here.
JOHN: What a beautiful statement piece.
CHRISTINE: It really fits with "Poet Place".
JOHN: Yes it does.
CHRISTINE: Yeah.
JOHN: I've always loved U Street.
CHRISTINE: Hey, remember that time when... JOHN: I remember that time.
Oh very nice.
CHRISTINE: Very nice.
JOHN: Okay, So I'm drawn down here, but I see this must be one of two bedrooms, but we'll do that on our way out.
CHRISTINE: Yeah.
So this must, this is the first bathroom.
JOHN: This is the first bedroom.
CHRISTINE: And...
BOTH: It's big enough to be a bedroom!
CHRISTINE: But, you know, you can also put a lot of extra storage, you can put a cabinet here.
JOHN: I think you could put a Jacuzzi over there.
CHRISTINE: Bed, a guest bedroom.
JOHN: Yeah!
CHRISTINE: Okay.
JOHN: Okay, wow.
So this is the epitome of city living.
CHRISTINE: Oh, this is city living and you know, I know the kitchen's right here, but just looking out the window from this view, it's like, Oh my gosh, why would you want to cook?
JOHN: Who needs to cook?
CHRISTINE: I'm going to eat right there.
JOHN: So here's the trend that we've been seeing now recently, it's these thin Quartz cabinets.
CHRISTINE: They're, they're really growing on me.
JOHN: Yeah.
CHRISTINE: This, I bet, is... the fridge, look at that!
JOHN: That's a Bosch refrigerator, those are really... CHRISTINE: Oh, I love the style.
I mean, I love the way they blended it in.
Well, why do you need pantry when you probably would just be going out all the time?
JOHN: Uh, amen to that.
Because right outside these windows, it's all happening here because we're at 9th and U Street.
There are, you know, Michelin rated restaurants.
CHRISTINE: Oh, and don't forget, the best half smoke in town is right around the corner.
JOHN: You know, and we've learned that you split 'em and burn 'em.
That's the way to have the half smoke.
CHRISTINE: Stop it!
You're making me hungry.
JOHN: Me too.
CHRISTINE: Let's go check out the bedroom.
JOHN: Let's go get a half smoke.
And the owner's bedroom suite.
CHRISTINE: Again, it's that nice urban vibe.
JOHN: Well, you have this huge floor to ceiling window.
So you know... CHRISTINE: And you have a great shot of the street.
JOHN: You get up in the morning, and you're like, like, "Good morning, Shaw!"
CHRISTINE: Nobody wants to see that that early.
Oh go... JOHN: Hey there's Bob and his dog!
That would be my morning routine every day.
CHRISTINE: Alright, aright.
Give the, give the neighborhood a break.
JOHN: Every day I would do it when I get up.... CHRISTINE: Yes, yes.
JOHN: Here we are in the owner's bathroom.
CHRISTINE: Right, ya know, I have to say, I love the sinks.
JOHN: Mmm-hmm, me too.
CHRISTINE: I love the, the style.
JOHN: Yeah, can we talk about the toilet?
This is very high tech.
CHRISTINE: It is, it is.
JOHN: This is very good.
All righty, so the only thing left is the... CHRISTINE: Second bedroom.
JOHN: Second bedroom, which... CHRISTINE: Oh, it's a nice size!
JOHN: Yeah.
CHRISTINE: And it's got this great window for natural light.
JOHN: Sure does, a lot of light coming in.
CHRISTINE: Oh well, you know, it's a lot of light, but you actually have a nice view of the air conditioning unit.
JOHN: Yeah, you sure do!
That's what blinds are for.
CHRISTINE: That's true.
JOHN: Last but not least... CHRISTINE: Ah, washer dryer and that's... JOHN: Big washer and dryer!
CHRISTINE: That's a big washer and dryer!
JOHN: Big closet for it too.
CHRISTINE: Wow.
I can invite my friends over to do laundry.
Or charge people... JOHN: You could do, it could be your side hustle.
CHRISTINE: Yeah, it could.
JOHN: You know, "Tina's Laundry Service".
Alright, city condo.
CHRISTINE: Well, this is going to be tough.
I'm thinking of a listing price and you know, I love this place.
JOHN: Well, all I'm thinking about is prices from 20 years ago, when all my friends lived here.
CHRISTINE: I was just thinking of your wardrobe from 20 years ago.
JOHN: It's the same!
CHRISTINE: Hi Judy.
JUDY: Hello, welcome back.
What do you think?
CHRISTINE: I'll tell you, it's all location, location, location.
JUDY: Absolutely.
Well, or, do you have any questions about it?
CHRISTINE: Yes, especially being in a downtown location.
How about parking?
JUDY: There isn't parking.
It's important, of course, to a lot of people, but now I don't get asked for it that much.
A lot of people do want to know about walkability and they do want to know about Metro.
And this of course is just top of the charts when it comes to that.
JOHN: Okay, well I think I'm rearin' to go.
CHRISTINE: Well, I actually, I know you're "Rearin' to go," but I have one more question, how about the condo fees?
JUDY: $530.
JOHN: Okay, that's fine... CHRISTINE: That's not bad, yeah.
JOHN: Cause that's a big space.
CHRISTINE: Yeah.
JUDY: It's 1,139 square feet, two bedrooms, two baths.
Obviously it has a lot of beautiful high-end features.
JOHN: Sure enough.
JUDY: As you saw.
It's got Caesarstone, Quartz countertops.
JOHN: Caesarstone is what it was.
CHRISTINE: Oh, that's what it was.
JUDY: Floor to ceiling Windsor windows.
CHRISTINE: It was quiet in there.
JUDY: Right.
Now it's built for its location.
JOHN: Mmm-hmm.
CHRISTINE: I'm going to, I'm going to come in at... $799,000.
JOHN: Good guess.
JUDY: All right.
JOHN: So do I go for 775 or do I go for 825?
That's the question.
CHRISTINE: Hmmm... JOHN: I'm going to go for... CHRISTINE: Yes?
JOHN: I'll go big or go home.
I'll go for 825, final answer.
JUDY: All right, final answer.
CHRISTINE: You're confident, I love that.
Like, "825!"
JUDY: I have to say these are both really impressively close.
And the actual listing price is $829,000.
CHRISTINE: Oh my gosh!
You were almost spot-on!
(laughter) Is that, like, your 9th Street dance?
JOHN: Well, its my "U and 9th" it's called the "U and 9th" all the kids are doing it.
Okay, so... Well, Judy, this was a fantastic start to, to Shaw... JUDY: Absolutely.
JOHN: And so we're off to house number two.
CHRISTINE: We'll follow you.
JUDY: Okay!
All right, here we go.
JOHN: So can we get, like a, half smoke on the way?
CHRISTINE: Oh yum.
JUDY: Absolutely.
JOHN: We've always known Shaw is a great place to hang out, but its influence on Black culture makes it one of the most important in DC history.
KEN: Right now, we're in the center of Shaw, the Historic Howard Theater.
And the DC area was like the, the center of Black culture and Black music throughout the 20th century.
The Howard Theater was the first black managed theater.
It was called the "People's Theater."
It was for the people of the Shaw district and it predated the Apollo Theater by a good five years.
In fact, some people say it was the model for the Apollo Theater, but initially unlike the Howard, the Apollo Theater was a "Whites Only" theater until the 1930s.
Whereas this was where the burgeoning of Black musical culture really happened.
The music that was playing here at the Howard Theater reflected the popular music of the day, the big bands were here: Count Basie was here, Duke Ellington was here.
but after the war, when that started to fade, this became a rhythm and blues town.
Rhythm & blues then changed in the '60s into soul music.
And of course, DC had a major role in soul music.
It was the home of Marvin Gaye, who grew up in Southeast DC.
But things changed as we got into the '60s with the death of Martin Luther King, this area was so impacted by the 1968 riots.
It was seven days of rioting, seven days of fires.
And after that, this area experienced the flight.
People moved out.
This wasn't an area where people felt safe to live.
And that was again reflected in the music of DC, because it was in the seventies that Go-Go music really started to take a hold as part of DC's musical history.
That was the time when Chuck Brown and the bands like Trouble Funk were talking about the urban decay, talking about the challenges they were facing, but it was not a miserable music.
It was a music which was celebrating life, as well as recognizing the challenges of life.
CHRISTINE: Theaters like the Howard and Lincoln were the launching points for many musicians, and also comedians, such as Dick Gregory, in the 1950s.
CHRISTIAN: We're here at the iconic "Ben's Chili Bowl" in the "Ben's Chili Bowl Alley".
It's almost a destination on its own.
Here since 1958, this mural, about three years old, it was crowdsourced.
They reached out to Washingtonians and they let the people decide who would go on this wall.
So these, right here behind us are the people's champions.
And I think the reason the artists set aside Dave Chappelle and Dick Gregory, is because they were genre-shatterers.
My father, other than being an amazing dad, was the first to take topical news and turn it into comedy.
My dad was the highest paid entertainer in the country, not Black entertainer, broad spectrum.
And he left it all.
He left it all to join Dr. King and be out there as a nonviolent civil rights advocate.
DC and Shaw more specifically was, um, this was my summer backyard.
Like little ducklings, we'd follow our parents all over the city, uh, just being activists.
Shaw, historically, has done a great job with respecting it's history.
You still have Lee's Florist, Ben's Chili Bowl, Industrial Bank with their iconic clock tower.
And then right next to it, you have a very contemporary condominium development, and it's done in a way that it doesn't feel forced.
Shaw's just a very, it's a unique place.
The diversity here is organic, it's real.
(doorbell) JOHN: Well, this is a beauty, Judy.
JUDY: Yeah, absolutely.
So here we are in our second property, 917 S Street.
As you can see, it is a beautiful property with this Bay window and this beautiful original brick work.
There's a lot to see here, two bedrooms, two and a half baths, 1,680 square feet and a beautiful outdoor deck.
CHRISTINE: Oh, now you know I love a good deck.
JOHN: Yes.
JUDY: All right.
Maybe you should go in and see what you think.
CHRISTINE: Yes!
JOHN: We're ready!
JUDY: Alright!
JOHN: Wow.
CHRISTINE: Wow.
Lovely living space.
JOHN: This is beautiful.
I can't wait to get back to that kitchen, but first... let's just calm.
Slow.
CHRISTINE: Let's just take each space at a time.
Okay, all right.
I've got to say, I love the blonde cabinetry.
JOHN: Yes.
CHRISTINE: And the millwork.
The Detail.
JOHN: Yeah, hand crafted.
CHRISTINE: Yes, yes.
And you know, I love the pickled flooring.
JOHN: Me too, eight inch plank there.
Into the dining room and look at this.
CHRISTINE: All right.
I have to say, you know, because mirrors kind of hit their peak in the eighties.
That's kind of the thing, that the first thing you take out of homes, but this works so well that I think there'll be a comeback.
JOHN: Well, you noticed those mirrors, and what I can't get over from my perspective right here, is this window in the dining room.
All you see is exposed brick from the building next door.
So you have this great texture here, and then you have this texture of this tile coming up in the kitchen.
CHRISTINE: Oh, yeah.
JOHN: And then into this beautiful, beautiful kitchen.
JOHN: Okay, we've seen lots of kitchens, but this one is beyond special.
CHRISTINE: I, I don't even know where to start because there's so many unique things in this kitchen.
JOHN: Oh, I can't with these cabinets.
CHRISTINE: I mean, I don't think we've seen the grid before.
JOHN: This grill... No, on these cabinets.
CHRISTINE: Okay, no, look at the height.
JOHN: They're huge.
CHRISTINE: Yeah.
JOHN: Can we just talk about this tile?
I mean, this is incredible.
CHRISTINE: It's actually Fireclay tile.
You know what makes it so unique is that each little piece would be different.
JOHN: Shall we check out the lower level?
CHRISTINE: Yeah, but first, did you notice that patio?
JOHN: Oh, I missed the patio, come on.
CHRISTINE: Yeah and actually it would be even better if you like made me a nice refreshing drink and then brought it out to me.
JOHN: We don't have time for that, we have more house to check out.
CHRISTINE: Right.
JOHN: Come on.
CHRISTINE: Oh, I love these hardwood floors throughout.
JOHN: Beautiful.
They have a little office area here.
CHRISTINE: This is a great little space.
JOHN: Yep!
Into bedroom number one.
CHRISTINE: Oh!
Love this window seat.
JOHN: Yeah, that's a nice feature!
I think there's storage underneath.
CHRISTINE: There is!
JOHN: There you go.
CHRISTINE: This is super cute.
JOHN: Nice little bedroom.
And nice walk-in closets.
CHRISTINE: Yes.
JOHN: And then look at that tile.
CHRISTINE: Oh!
I mean, I've seen it in different places.
But this is... JOHN: You have?
I've never seen this tile before.
CHRISTINE: I'm so glad to see how lovely it looks.
JOHN: It's like fish scales.
Okay, on to... bedroom number two.
CHRISTINE: So I'm guessing probably utility, storage?
JOHN: Storage, laundry.
CHRISTINE: And this must be... JOHN: Oh my gosh.
CHRISTINE: En-suite bathroom.
Oh, here's the fish tile.
JOHN: Times 10, wrapping the entire bathroom.
CHRISTINE: I love it.
I think it's just because it's unique and look what else they did!
Recognize the grill... JOHN: Yep, from the kitchen.
CHRISTINE: Yep.
And look at the detail on just the handles.
Those are really pretty.
JOHN: What I love is the continuity through the house, that you still have the same elements in the kitchen, as here.
That they used the same tile in both bathrooms, because it's such a showstopper.
CHRISTINE: Well, if you think that's a showstopper, you need to come over here.
Take a look.
JOHN: Oh my god!
I didn't think there could be more of this fish scale tile.
It's stunning and did we mention this tub?
Are we the only two people in the area who don't have soaking tubs?
CHRISTINE: I think so, I think so.
But it does make me want to start taking baths more.
JOHN: Yeah, right.
And this is the owner's closet.
CHRISTINE: Okay, now this is a closet.
I love the shelves, the custom cabinetry, the little cubbies.
But what I love most is this light on the rods.
It is fabulous.
Okay, I just dropped the mic.
JOHN: You dropped... that is yours!
All right.
And finally the owner's bedroom.
CHRISTINE: Look at the detail.
JOHN: Yeah.
I love these paneled walls.
CHRISTINE: It makes it even more special.
And I know you love your brick walls.
JOHN: Well, again, they frame... these big windows frame that beautiful old brick.
CHRISTINE: Yeah and it just the texture.
JOHN: Texture and color.
CHRISTINE: Yeah, okay, so now we've seen the whole place.
JOHN: Mhm.
CHRISTINE: All right.
Do you have a listing price in mind?
JOHN: Oh, I've got a listing price.
I'm rarin' to go, yep.
CHRISTINE: It was the fish tile that did it, that put it over.
JOHN: That really did.
What can I say?
I love that tile.
CHRISTINE: You do love that tile.
JOHN: Okay.
CHRISTINE: I have a feeling I'm going to be seeing that tile at your place.
JOHN: Let's find Judy.
CHRISTINE: Okay.
JUDY: Fancy seeing you!
CHRISTINE: We were wondering where you were!
What a nice place to meet.
JUDY: Yeah, great!
CHRISTINE: Oh, feels good to sit too.
JUDY: What did you think?
JOHN: Love this house.
CHRISTINE: I loved it!
Loved it!
The minute you walk in the bay window, the details, the hardwood flooring.
Oh!
And the tile.
JOHN: The cabinetry just, it wowed me.
CHRISTINE: It's something different, a little different.
JUDY: All the high end appliances.
I mean the usual suspects of waterworks, the Sub-Zero the Wolf.
I mean, all of this is here, but we don't normally get this detail in the woodwork.
CHRISTINE: And we're sitting on this beautiful porch too.
JOHN: It has a lot of individual characteristics that you don't see anywhere else.
JUDY: No, you really don't.
Well, do you have any questions about it?
CHRISTINE: A parking spot?
JUDY: Right there.
CHRISTINE: Perfect.
JOHN: That is really nice.
Especially in this neighborhood, right?
JUDY: Oh yeah, absolutely.
And the Metro is only a couple of blocks from here.
CHRISTINE: And condo fees?
What's the condo fee?
JUDY: It's really low, it's $196.
CHRISTINE: Oh, I'm sorry, I asked about the condo fee?
JUDY: $196 is really low.
CHRISTINE: That is amazing for this space.
JUDY: Yeah.
JOHN: It is.
CHRISTINE: So taking everything, um, you said the parking, the condo fees and just the house itself.
I am going to go with a listing price of... $1.1 million.
JUDY: Okay, okay.
JOHN: Okay, Judy, I'm ready to make my... can I call you Judith?
JUDY: If you'd like to call me by a name that's not mine.
JOHN: Alright, Judy, done and done, Judy.
Um, all right, I'm gonna make a guess of 1.2 million, okay.
JUDY: All right, So 917 S Street.
The winner... is John.
(Christine groans) CHRISTINE: I thought, well... JUDY: The actual price is $1.225, so you're really close.
CHRISTINE: Oh you!
Okay, in all fairness, it is actually a learning process.
JUDY: Yeah, I'm impressed with how closely you are both getting.
JOHN: But the thing you don't know is after we're done with this show is we're starting a Realty agency.
JUDY: Okay!
(laughter) CHRISTINE: Okay, okay.
JOHN: So now it's time to go to house number three.
JUDY: All right, here we go.
CHRISTINE: Shaw is now one of the most desirable neighborhoods to live in.
And like so many areas around DC, the property values reflect that.
JOHN: But that wasn't always the case.
After the 1968 riots, Shaw struggled to rebuild.
So in the 1980s, community, grassroots organizers spearheaded projects all across Shaw to restore the neighborhood to it's former glory.
CHRISTINE: Those projects and organizers are reflected all over Shaw, like the Shaw library and DC's first skate park, as well as some of the coolest art installations in the city.
JOHN: And Judy is going to show us her favorite spot in Shaw, which is right around the corner from our last property.
JUDY: So now we are in Wonderland of Washington, DC.
This is called Blagden Alley, and this is sort of the heart and soul of Shaw, as well as the city.
It has everything.
It has the grit, it has the architecture, it has history and it has amazing restaurants.
And art, as you can see here.
CHRISTINE: You know, looking around at the artwork, it just feels so organic to this place.
JUDY: Well, it is because everyone came together, the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities helped fund it in 2015.
The people who live here, the neighbors provided the garage doors.
You walk around, you'll just see some wonderful, wonderful artwork.
CHRISTINE: What I love, is that when you step back this painting by Lisa Marie spells out “Love.” JUDY: Part of what's great about Shaw is you just have a little bit of everything and everybody, everyone can bring their voice here and just celebrate life.
I just absolutely love it.
We'll have to just see if we can circle back after we see our third property.
JOHN: Okay, that sounds like a plan.
JUDY: So can you wait?
JOHN: I can wait.
(doorbell) CHRISTINE: This has been a great day so far.
JOHN: And this is such a great neighborhood.
CHRISTINE: I love the tree-lined streets.
JOHN: Yeah, and the homes are so different, so cute.
CHRISTINE: They are.
JOHN: Nice mix.
JUDY: Well, that's what's so wonderful.
You just really get a little bit of everything in Shaw.
So here we are at 928 O Street.
CHRISTINE: Obviously when you're walking up to it, it stands out.
But at the same time, I feel it still blends in with the neighborhood.
JUDY: You have sort of a combination of the square bay front, which you see in the Federal and Victorian properties throughout the city with the industrial windows and enormous stature.
The developer was looking to achieve a light industrial, modern, timeless vibe.
JOHN: Achieved.
JUDY: And this is one of a kind, it's four stories.
From every window you have either a tree line street or architecture or business space or sky.
It has an elevator that goes all four floors.
JOHN: Great!
I'm tired of stairs!
JUDY: So you can do that!
CHRISTINE: But you're not taking it.
We're doing the steps, okay?
JOHN: All right, okay.
JUDY: Okay.
So now you have your third and final opportunity and I'll give you a little tip for DC real estate.
JOHN: We love tips.
CHRISTINE: We love those.
JUDY: When it comes to DC buyers... JOHN: Okay.
JUDY: They appreciate quality, but there is really, there's just more money than time.
CHRISTINE: Well, that's funny because we appreciate quality, but we have more time than money.
Now, on that note... JOHN: We wish it was the other way around.
JUDY: I'll see you soon.
I'll come find you.
JOHN: If I don't see you first, Judy.
CHRISTINE: Alright.
JOHN: Okay.
So entryway.
CHRISTINE: The grand staircase, but also here's the elevator... JOHN: Much needed.
CHRISTINE: But we're not doing that.
Let's go.
JOHN: We're gonna take the stairs.
Up we go.
I like these floating stairs.
CHRISTINE: These really are grand.
Really, as soon as you walk in, it really is a focal point.
JOHN: And this industrial feel with these rails.
CHRISTINE: Mmm-hmm, it's very artistic.
JOHN: It is and we have this whole wall of closets the entire way down this hallway to... CHRISTINE: A bedroom.
JOHN: Bedroom number one.
CHRISTINE: Okay.
Lots of great natural light.
JOHN: Yes and this is something that we haven't seen... power shades.
CHRISTINE: Oh, nice.
Great view, great natural light.
JOHN: And I love the black panes.
CHRISTINE: And a full bath.
JOHN: Yeah.
CHRISTINE: That's nice.
JOHN: Nice bathroom.
Marble vanity, and I love that wood.
CHRISTINE: Okay, let's make our way down.
JOHN: Okay.
Onto bedroom number two.
CHRISTINE: Yes, okay.
So we have another nice full bath.
JOHN: Very nice, beautiful shower.
CHRISTINE: And, again, the natural light, what a great view.
JOHN: This is basically all windows on these two sides.
CHRISTINE: It is.
I wouldn't want to get up in the morning and leave this room.
JOHN: Actually, you would, there's so much sun.
You'd be up and at 'em.
You'd be like "Bing, Good morning!
Good morning!"
Hey, we love lights, right?
CHRISTINE: We do.
And now up to the next floor.
JOHN: Oh, wow.
CHRISTINE: Okay.
JOHN: Look at this!
This is beautiful.
It's the big 'wow' room, right?
CHRISTINE: Yes, it is, it is.
Fridge, I love the way it's hidden.
JOHN: Mmm-hmm, Thermador range and I adore this countertop.
The sliver, it's so clean.
CHRISTINE: I am loving the thinner counter-tops.
And look at the light in the windows up top.
JOHN: Well, it's a grand space, all these windows, the skylight.
CHRISTINE: And I love the architectural design.
JOHN: Yeah.
CHRISTINE: And I know you love choppin' and preppin', so this is a perfect space for you.
JOHN: It is.
But what do these things do?
It's a button.
Do you think it's for like?
CHRISTINE: No I'm not going to touch.
JOHN: Go ahead!
Touch it, you do it.
I don't want to do it.
CHRISTINE: It's probably for the blinds.
JOHN: Nope, it's a plug.
CHRISTINE: So I mean the whole space is wonderful.
You know, you have this great living area, you have the fireplace, a gas fireplace.
JOHN: A gas fireplace with crystals in it.
CHRISTINE: And then you've got a great dining room area.
But what I like is it small enough that it's just cozy?
JOHN: It is.
CHRISTINE: Yeah.
JOHN: And I love all these windows, and the French door to that little balcony.
CHRISTINE: I know you hate to leave this room, but there's more to see.
JOHN: I can't wait to see more.
Little half bath.
CHRISTINE: Yeah, but look at this sink, isn't this neat?
JOHN: Oh, that's such a great sink.
CHRISTINE: It's the details, remember, all the great details.
JOHN: It is.
Details, details.
The in-between area.
CHRISTINE: Oh, so this must be the owner's suite.
Ooh.
JOHN: This indeed is the owner's suite.
CHRISTINE: This...
I don't think we've seen something quite like this.
JOHN: No, this is more of a free form luxury bath.
CHRISTINE: I know you're eye probably went right to the fixtures.
Cause I know this is the kind of thing that you really like.
JOHN: I actually went to this wall of marble.
It looks like just a few slabs, yeah, and this walk-in shower.
No curtain needed.
CHRISTINE: But I do hope that there is a button for the shade's in here.
JOHN: I think so.
And to the owners bedroom.
CHRISTINE: The architectural details, you can just see it throughout this home.
I mean, he's carried the light into all these spaces.
JOHN: It's just beautiful and I love the view.
It's very urban.
It looks like an Edward Hopper painting.
CHRISTINE: And I know we have one more level.
JOHN: And we know what that is.
CHRISTINE: Yes, I've been waiting for this!
JOHN: Rooftop.
CHRISTINE: All right.
See?
This is so fabulous!
JOHN: Yeah, oh my gosh!
So you can see 360 views from this private rooftop.
It's private.
CHRISTINE: What a great entertainment space.
JOHN: Yeah, and you have this outdoor dining.
CHRISTINE: And you've got two seating areas.
JOHN: Sure do.
I can stay up here all day.
CHRISTINE: I know, there's a nice breeze coming through now.
But I suppose Judy probably would like, to... JOHN: Yeah, I think she probably would.
CHRISTINE: Okay.
JOHN: Come on.
CHRISTINE: Let's go.
JOHN: Judy!
JUDY: Alright!
Welcome back!
JOHN: So... JUDY: What did you think?
JOHN: One word: phenomenal.
This is an incredible house.
CHRISTINE: We haven't actually been in a home that has had an elevator so far.
JOHN: No this is the first.
CHRISTINE: So, you know, when thinking of the price, it kinda goes up.
JOHN: I don't know how to price that actually.
JUDY: Okay, do you have any questions?
JOHN: Is there a parking?
JUDY: Yes, there is.
One secured space with a garage.
CHRISTINE: What are the condo fees?
JUDY: They are $385, which is for this square footage, is, kind of, unbelievable.
CHRISTINE: That is unbelievable!
JOHN: That's, basically, what I pay, Judy.
CHRISTINE: My condo is the size of this room and I pay more.
JOHN: Anything else we should know?
JUDY: Well, I mean, you've got the basics.
It's 2,870 square feet.
It's three bedrooms, three and a half baths, four level, elevator, amazing roof deck.
But you know the one thing here that is really hard to price is the quality.
JOHN: We can see it in every facet.
JUDY: Yeah.
JOHN: Okay, I think I'm ready to make my guess.
So I could go on for days about this place.
The staircase is so fantastic.
The rooftop, the kitchen, the counters.
JUDY: Yes.
JOHN: The number I am choosing today is... $2.625.
JUDY: All right.
CHRISTINE: You always throw in those odd numbers.
JOHN: I do.
CHRISTINE: You love to do that.
Okay, I'm going to make it simple, but I also think you are a little high.
JOHN: Okay.
CHRISTINE: I'm going to come in at a guess of 2.4 million.
JUDY: Alright, well, one of us is a little high.
CHRISTINE: Oh my gosh!
That's you!
That means I am that winner!
JOHN: Yeah, I heard her the first time.
So, what's the actual price?
JUDY: $2.495.
JOHN: Oh, okay.
JUDY: Yeah.
CHRISTINE: That was good.
Judy, thank you so much.
JUDY: Absolutely, been so much fun.
CHRISTINE: This has been a, it's been a great day.
We saw three great homes.
We learned more about this wonderful neighborhood.
We can just see you love what you do.
JUDY: I do.
JOHN: Yeah, you really do this for a reason and that shows, and you're so, it's so genuine.
So it's been a pleasure.
JUDY: Well, you know what?
The nice thing about real estate is you don't have to talk anybody into anything.
It's either love it, or you don't.
And If someone loves you, try to help them get it.
JOHN: Well, that's super, yeah.
JUDY: Alright, here we go!
JOHN: After you, after you.
CHRISTINE: And maybe you can take the elevator this time.
JOHN: Ah, pshaw I'm going to take the steps.
JOHN: Hi Christian.
CHRISTIAN: Hello, hello, hello!
Welcome to Ben's Chili Bowl.
The iconic Ben's Chili Bowl.
Always a good place to start and end your tour of this area.
CHRISTINE: We are standing in front of a DC institution.
CHRISTIAN: It absolutely is, and the institution is much bigger than a food institution.
JOHN: So as we journey through here, what are some of the highlights that we should be looking out for?
CHRISTIAN: Literally you're living history.
There's placards everywhere.
So look to read them.
It's all tangible, it's accessible, so enjoy.
JOHN: Well, thank you we will.
CHRISTINE: Thank you so much!
CHRISTIAN: It's a pleasure meeting you both.
Take good care now!
CHRISTINE: Thank you!
Bu-bye!
JOHN: Hope to see you again!
I'll take you out to Ben's Chili Bowl sometime.
CHRISTIAN: Let's meet back here.
JOHN: Okay, deal.
