State police and the Russell County Sheriff's Office say they were searching for a man on Bluebird Drive and Russell Springs when gunfire began.
According to state police, Deputy Josh Phipps and the suspect were both hit.
Both died.
Governor Andy Beshear posted this on its, quote, tragic news for our commonwealth as a Russell County deputy was killed in the line of duty last night.
Brittany and I ask all of Kentucky to join us in praying for his family.
Fellow law enforcement officers and the entire Russell County community, unquote.
