Although we suspect the neighboring tribe is at fault, none of us know for sure.
Neither does our leader, Abba Nuku.
♪♪ He is a middleman between this world and the next.
A seer.
A person who speaks to the spirits of our ancestors.
My people have faith in their abilities.
♪♪ I, however, do not.
Abba Nuku: Seers usually serve until death, but the ancestors tell me that the fate of our tribe is contingent on new leadership.
Two among us are carriers of a trait that could allow them to communicate with the ancestors.
♪♪ Yemi Odun -- hunter, prop engineer, and weaver of words.
And Naji Bloom -- mathematician, artist, and scholar of yesteryears.
Tomorrow, I will require their decisions, and if both accept, they will be expected to provide a sacrifice that reflects the extent of their faith.
The one with the purest offering will take my place.
-Bet's on Yemi Odun.
-The Osmo people stand by... Bloom is as skeptical of our faith as we... Zaire: I think you'd be a great leader, Naj.
Oh?
[ Laughs ] Yeah.
Mm-hmm.
Uh, a seer that doesn't believe in spirits or the intangible.
Come on, Zaire.
Besides, Yemi's the golden child.
He's the chosen one.
According to Abba Nuku, so are you, remember?
[ Scoffs ] I was worried.
Worried about what?
That you'd accept.
We'd have to part ways, and...

[ Chuckles ] So do I.
[ Exhales ] ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ [ Gasps ] [ Gasps, whimpers ] ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ Zaire: Where do you think you're going?
I don't want to do this anymore, Zaire.
I don't see the point.
Because you're not here to see shit.
That's Yemi's job.
And mine is to make sure the tribe is fed.
[ Sighs ] You said that once Abba Nuku was shaken enough to step down, Yemi would be secure and we would stop incriminating the Osmo.
You both are tampering with stability that has taken centuries to build.
People will die.
Tomorrow, everything will be as it should be.
Trust me, Kiama, please.
[ Man clears throat ] Keeping your females in order, I presume.
And we won't have a problem tomorrow, right?
No, sir.
Naji intends to concede.
As it should be.
The tribe will look to me to take command.
And you know what that means, right?
War.
[ Naji gasps ] Naji, what's wrong?
What happened?
Talk to me.
[ Sighs ] You and... Yemi... were conspiring to get him into power by inciting a war.
[ Laughs ] Sounds even crazier when I say it out loud, right?
Yeah.
Nerves, I'm sure.
Nerves.
You -- You aren't reconsidering, are you?

[ Birds chirping ] [ Chuckles ] [ Exhales sharply ] Locate stylo-pad.

[ Exhales softly ] This is the contract of choice.
If you have a sacrifice, you can place it on the podium next to Yemi's.
His rations for the month -- generous, given the shortages.

Yemi wasn't an option.
He was my test.
To show the ancestors I believed, I sacrificed my eyes for theirs.
Atari: But you're blind.
How can you be a seer if you can't see anything?
[ Laughter ] Sight is nothing without vision, Atari.
I see in my own way.
But you can't see me sitting here.
[ Laughter ] Yes, I can, in all the ways that matter.
I can see the great man you will become, the future of our tribe, and all of your souls lighting up the darkness.
