Boundary Stones

The Silent Sentinels Turned the Tide for Women’s Suffrage

3/9/2026 | 4m 8s

Suffragists in Washington overcame brutality in the fight for the vote.

In 1917, the National Woman’s Party began daily pickets at the White House to push President Woodrow Wilson to support women’s suffrage. But what began as a silent demonstration shifted dramatically when suffragists were jailed, abused, and force‑fed. Their resolve amidst the mistreatment became a turning point in the fight for the vote, especially after news of the “Night of Terror" leaked out.
