>>> THE SILVER RIM HAS BECOME MORE THAN A JEWELRY STORE, ECLECTIC OFFERINGS CURATED BY THE OWNER HELP CREATE AN ECLECTIC COMMUNITY OVER THE LAST THREE DECADES.
THE SPIRIT OF THAT COMMUNITY INSPIRED WILLIAMS TO START A BLOCK PARTY IN 1997 AS A CELEBRATION OF MUSIC, DANCE, AND ART.
BUT NOW HE SAYS THIS WILL BE THE LAST DANCE FOR THE FESTIVAL.
WE HAVE THE STORY.
>> I STILL REMEMBER THE FIRST ONE, IT WAS A PERFECT SUMMER DAY.
THE MUSIC CAME ON, WE ARE ACTUALLY DOING IT.
>> Reporter: THE EVENT IS A MASSIVE ONE IN HYDE PARK, MANY PEOPLE EAT, SHOP, CELEBRATE.
THE FIRST EVENT, IT WAS IN AN ALLEY NEXT TO HIS JEWELRY STORE IN 1997, IT WAS NOT BIG ENOUGH TO CALL A BLOCK PARTY.
>> IT WAS AN APPRECIATION PARTY.
HAVING BEEN OPEN FOUR YEARS.
I MET INTERESTING PEOPLE.
IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY.
IT WOULD BE COOL TO HAVE AN EVENT THAT FEATURES THIS, WICKER PARK WAS VERY VIBRANT.
♪ >> Reporter: WILLIAMS SAYS HE HAS BEEN TRYING TO GET CITY FESTIVALS TO INCLUDE MORE BLACK AND BROWN ACTS WITHOUT MUCH LUCK.
>> I SAID, I WILL NOT KEEP BEGGING THEM, I WILL START ONE.
I CALLED UP SOME FRIENDS, CUSTOMERS, THEY SAID, OKAY, COOL .
THAT WAS REALLY IT.
IT WAS A FREE EVENT.
I GOT EXTENSION CORDS FROM MY HOUSE.
THAT POWERED THE ENTIRE BLOCK PARTY.
THE FIRST 10 YEARS WE HAD NO VENDORS.
NO SECURITY.
NO NOTHING.
THE FIRST ONE WAS SO PURE, MAGICAL.
THE STORE CAN BE BUSIER WHICH CAN HELP PAY FOR THE BLOCK PARTY.
I >> Reporter: THE EVENT OUTGREW VALLEY.
WHEN THE SILVER ROOM MOVED TO THE HEART OF HYDE PARK, IT HAD A BIGGER PROFILE.
>> WHEN WE MOVED DOWN HERE IS WHEN IT ESCALATED AND BECAME A HUGE ORDEAL.
IT IS NOW 40,000 PEOPLE.
IT GENERATES OVER $1 MILLION.
>> Reporter: IT IS FREE TO ATTEND UNTIL 2022 WHEN IT WAS TICKETED.
NOW, IT IS TOUGH CONTINUE TO CONTINUE WITH THE LABOR AND THE COST.
>> PEOPLE DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH TIME, RESOURCE, MONEY IS INVOLVED.
WE DON'T HAVE A TEAM OF 100 PEOPLE.
>> Reporter: WILLIAMS SAYS IT IS A BIG PART OF WHY THE 18th YEAR OF THE BLOCK PARTY WILL BE THE LAST.
>> I THINK IT IS TIME.
SOMETIMES , THINGS NEED TO END.
WE HAD A GREAT RUN AT AN IMPACT ON SO MANY PEOPLE.
IT IS NOT A TIME TO BE SAD.
I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO DANCING.
SAYING HELLO TO FRIENDS.
I HAVE EIGHT JOBS.
I AM GOOD.
