- We will be back with more music shortly.
And a reminder that you can visit the band's website, simredmondband.com for upcoming concert dates and new music releases.
Back in 2014, we visited the band in their Ithaca studio.
Let's check that out right now.
- The beginnings of the Sim Redmond Band were, yeah, the end of our high school years for some of us.
We started playing in some bands together.
Not the Sim Redmond Band at that point, a band called Ginger and another band called Duck Tape.
- Duck Tape.
- And that's where the four of us started playing music.
Asa and I have been playing obviously since we were kids.
Asa's my big brother.
And then from there, it was history.
We met Nate.
It's not too long after 2000, 2001.
Nate was playing with "John Brown's Body."
- It's pretty amazing to go through so much with the same crew.
I mean, we've been through a lot together.
(upbeat music) I don't think at all about what notes I'm playing in most of the songs, you know, it's just an energetic transfer, you know?
- [Sim] Yeah, there's definitely a level of comfort and ease with playing with somebody for 15 years.
Yeah, you definitely...
It's nice.
You don't think about exactly what you're doing.
You just think about the feeling of what you're doing.
- [Nate] Yeah, yeah.
- Having, you know, traveled to Japan together several times kinda brought us all together, I think.
(gong rings) (lively upbeat traditional music) - The SRB Japan connection was just one of those weird little things that turned into a bigger thing.
A guy who owned a jam band head shop over there loved us.
From there, I think, 'cause Japan's kinda such a small place, even though there's a lot of people in this town, in fact, things like that are able to spread word of mouth.
It got to the point where there was enough interest in us that he brought us over there.
And that first trip was a blast.
It was crazy.
We played, like, some weird gigs, but like, one was on a beach in this like, I don't know.
- Typhoon outside.
- Yeah, it was- - Thatch roof.
- The weather was crazy but this place was packed to the gills.
They had to, like, part the crowd just to get us up to the stage so we could... And there, it was really quite something.
And we went back there several times.
(gong rings) - Ithaca is such the community.
I mean, there's really a lot of collaboration, a lot of cross pollination, people supporting each other, people promoting each other.
And it's always been that way ever since I first came here.
I can't imagine a better music town.
- And Ithaca's cool, there's, like, world-renowned musicians that live here.
They're just one of the community.
And the community seems to really support their musicians.
- Ithaca's such a laid back, mellow place.
We like to embody that in our music a little bit.
- I would say we're one of the only bands that you can dance to.
But you could also put your 2-year-old to sleep with some of our songs.
- Hey!
- Yeah, I like it.
- It works for my kid.
