(audience clapping and cheering) This song, I remember when I wrote it, my wife was outta town on a girls trip and I had the house to myself and I was like, "I have to write one song while I have the house to myself."
So I challenged myself to, and this is what I came up with, but at the time I had been reading a book by Flannery O'Connor called "Wise Blood".
And there was a, the song has little to do with the book other than there was this one part in the book where she was describing these soldiers coming home from a war and they're on a train ride.
And it was like all these faces of these young men that they, in their, they couldn't tell if they were young or old anymore because of the experience they had been through.
And just that little sentence kind of sent my mind down a rabbit hole.
And I put the book down and it just got to thinking about how quickly time passes in our lives and how over time we let little things steal from us.
Like little fears, little anxieties.
And you know, you get to a certain point and you turn around and you're like, "Man, I, you know."
It could be something silly like I, you know, that person really wanted to be my friend, but I never made time for them.
Or like, "I really wanted a gym membership, but I was self-conscious."
How silly is that?
And then the idea that like all these little fears, they're not really unique to us.
We all feel them.
We all have to deal with them.
So that's kinda where my mind was and sort of like trying to call anxiety absurd for myself, for my own sake, you know, so that I can be able to get over it a little bit.
So this is what I came up with, with all those things on my mind.
The song is called "Without Warning".

How does that feel?
It's pretty surreal.
I definitely have like, had some gratitude check moments, you know?
I'm very thankful for it, you know?
I remember getting that first one.
I had a song in "Shameless" and I got the email and I was like, I was like, "This is fake.
You know, this has gotta be spam."
But like, it came from my publishing guy.
I was like, I called him and I was like, "Hey, is this real?"
He's like, "Yeah."
Yeah.
I didn't believe it until I heard it on there.
So it's just kind of a wild thing.
You never really know what's gonna happen.
And so I'm very thankful for it and it's just a really surreal moment.
I definitely did starting out, you know, those kinds of things just seemed very unachievable or like, kind of like mythological like experiences.
But you know, it's kind of a small world all in all.
And you know, put out music you're proud of and if it resonates with people, doors open.

I mean, for sure, yeah.
I mean you are a product of who you're around and luckily for me, I was around some pretty cool talented people.
You know, Kelvin Holly I think is like kinda like my guitar hero.
Jason Isbell is the one that told me, you know, instead of waiting around for this other songwriter who I was in a band with to write more stuff, I should just write my own.
So yeah, there's like tons of those stories.

Oh man.
Well, you know, it's kind of kind of weird, you know, like when we were kids, all these heroes were just people's dads to us or their granddads.
I remember, you know, The Decoys would play at Tapper's Lounge inside the bowling alley and we thought, "Man, those guys are... Those old guys, you know, are still playing."
But we didn't know they were like 37 years old.
You know, we thought they were 70 years old or something.
And you know, I went to school with Spooner Oldham's daughter and people would say, "You know, he plays the keyboard for Neil Young."

You know, and really just gave you the creative tools that you needed to be the best version of yourself musically?
Right, I mean that's a great question.
I think that there's never really like, I mean, you could boil anything down to one pivotal moment, but then there are pivotal moments infinitely that way and that way, you know what I'm saying?
Like every single moment is pivotal in a way.
So I think about like, I mean you could trace it back, and back, and back, and when you get to the end, all that really, everything boils down to is, I started playing music 'cause I love it, you know what I'm saying?
And like I've always loved it and I've always taken it very seriously and been encouraged to by the upbringing I have, my parents and they've been very supportive and the community that we live in, you know, Muscle Shoals, Huntsville, North Alabama in general.
I mean, it was totally fostered organically just by pure proximity.
It's been one heck of a year.
I think for a lot of, for everybody.
But man, for me it just went by so fast.
I got married this year.
-That's crazy.
-(audience cheering) So it's been a joyous year in that regard, and... But a lot of fun things have happened this year.
Earlier in the year I got a call from a buddy and he said, "Man, my old band's getting back together again.
Would you wanna open some shows for us?"
And I was like, "Okay."
Because he's in a band called the Alabama Shakes.
I was like, "Oh lord."
He's like, "Now, no pressure man.
You don't have to if you don't want to."
I was like, "I'll be there, man."
And at the time I had had sort of like plans to maybe start making a record, another record again.
But that sort of kicked me in gear 'cause I wanted to put out some new music around those shows.
So I immediately booked some session time and we got in the studio and recorded 10 new songs and picked two of our favorites and fast tracked them and put those songs out, one before those opening dates for the Shakes and one right after.
So I'm gonna play one of those new ones for y'all.
This song's called "Slow Burn".
It was the one I was most excited about going into the studio.
It always kind of gave me like a Shins vibe, if you like that band, The Shins.
But it's sort of about how there's really nowhere on a map you can go that equals joy.
It's more of a state of mind and there's no substitute or shortcut to get there other than putting in the work on your own.
But it says that sort of in an optimistic way, you know?
So it goes like this.
