We are Sirius Company.
And this first song we wanna do is...
It's a song I wrote a few years ago.
And when I was writing it, I think I wasn't in my right state of mind if you know what I mean.
'Cause I could have sworn I was writing it about my girlfriend.
Come to find out, I ain't even have a girlfriend, so.
Song is about my guitar, y'all.

I'm John Monds, host of "The Quiet Storm" on 96.3 WHUR.
Happy to be here tonight with another artist from right here in DC that you know and love.
In fact, you know so much about him, we're gonna do a little history first.
We're welcoming Frank Sirius.
>>Yes sir, how you doing.
>>Sirius Company's the name of the new band.
>>Yeah, man.
>>You're joined by Jon here with us.
Jon is a newbie to go-go, somewhat.
(all laughing) >>Well, I guess so, yeah.
>>Absolutely not.
I got about 10 years.
>>So take me back.
We were talking about what happened before the listen band.
You were going to high school.
Your dad was in music.
>>Yeah, my dad was a doo-wop singer in the 60s.
I grew up around it all my life pretty much.
And then I grew up listening to go-go.
They played Chuck brown and Trouble Funk all day, all night, cookouts, everything.
So I grew up listening to it.
And when I was 10 years old, my dad got me a drum set.
I had my little tidy-widy underwear.
I came down in the morning, I had the John Riggins jersey on, and I jumped on the drum set and the first beat I played was (scatting).
The old Mr. Magic beat.
So I been in love with go ever since.
And in high school I met some guys that's also sang, and we started listening and rest is history, man.
It took us a while to get to where we wanted to get to, but we got there.
>>Any members from the old group in the new group?
>>Yeah, so I got my congo player Peany.
I have one of my closest friends Jason who plays trumpet and raps.
I mean, the group, we all stayed connected.
We all stayed friends.
And so, whenever I needed something, I always pluck some of my old guys, and here we are.
>>So John is a little bit younger, but his first actually listening to go-go was a listen band.
Where were you when you saw the listen band?
>>Man, my first go-go period, I was at Mirrors Nightclub right on New York Avenue.
It was a Monday night and I was in my first band and the guy was like, I'm gonna show you somebody, man.
Let's go out to this whatever.
I'm like it's Monday night.
What's going on with Monday night?
I dunno nothing about it.
Go in, Monday night looks like a Saturday night and my man and O and others are on stage, so yeah.
First time seeing go-go live was in right there.
>>And you were hooked at that point.
>>Absolutely.
>>So all then, you mentioned doo-wop, and of course you're from DC, there's so much music that's come through this area.
Why go-go over, for instance, just straight R&B?
>>That's a good question, 'cause John and I both, in my opinion, were good enough, are good enough to pretty much play on any stage, R&B, jazz, go-go, what have you.
But for me, I grew up listening to go-go, like I said, but our heroes were the James Funks, were the Chuck Browns and Big Tony's and Sugar Bears, you know what I mean?
So, listening to go-go, some of my friends, none of 'em listen to rap.
During the late 80s, early 90s, none of 'em listened to a whole lot of R&B, and we listened to go-go.
That's what you bumped in your cars and play your PA tapes and stuff like that.
So, I wanted to grow up and be Buggs from Junk Yard.
You know what I mean, so.
I'm just a go-go guy, man, through and through.
And I can't really shake it, not that I want to.
It's been good to me.
>>I can personally pinpoint my first hearing go-go, which was really Chuck Brown, "Bustin' Loose."
I worked in North Carolina on the radio station in high school.
But really driving through DC and hearing Trouble Funk, "Drop the Bomb."
It was really the one that was like, okay.
>>Yeah, yeah, yeah.
They was so dynamic, man.
They still are dynamic.
And their music just touch you in a different kind of way.
You know what I mean?
Hearing those guys play back then just, excuse me, seeing them on records.
I remember the first time I picked up a album, and I could see Trouble Funk, "Drop The Bomb" and "Bustin' Loose" on the album.
It was like, man, these guys from around here you know what I mean?
So I was starstruck at an early age from go-go artists.
And that's how I got started, man.
>>We're here with Sirius Company, and "On Top of The Moon."
>>Thank y'all so much, y'all.

>>Welcome back to "DMV The Beat."
We're here with Sirius Company.
We have Jon and Scooby with us because that's what everybody knows them by, including the teachers as we just found out.
So Sirius Company, really I look at it as a super group in go-go because you have members from your old band.
You also have Ms. Kemp of Georgia.
So how did that all come together?
>>My knucklehead sister, we played in Familiar Face together, another super group, in my opinion.
And then when we left Familiar Faces, I called her up and said, "Let's team up and do our thing."
And we have our own band and do it the way we see it.
And it's been working out, man.
We've been working, can't complain.
It's been a fabulous, nice four years.
And she's the woman of the group, the face, the pretty face.
And she can sing a little bit too.
>>So just a little bit.
>>Just a little bit.
>>So was that an added touch?
Lot of all-male bands in go-go.
She was one of the first.
>>Yeah.
>>As far as the females concerned.
>>Yeah, she's definitely a pioneer in the game.
Stepping on the scene with RE back in the '92, I believe, 93.
And ever since then, she's been a powerhouse in the game.
I consider ourselves lucky to have her, doing her thing.
When we put the band together, I kind of wanted to have a versatile band.
Like everybody in the band plays couple instruments and it serves us well, especially in times where guys might be late coming from another gig or some guys they work, they might be late coming off work.
And it's nothing for John to jump on the keyboard you know what I mean?
Or Peany to jump on the drums or Marcus to jump on the drums or congo.
So it's like everybody has multiple things that they do.
And it makes us one of the more versatile bands in the city.
>>I noticed that you pretty much were able to sound check everybody's instrument.
>>Oh, you noticed that?
>>Yeah, I did.
Unusual, 'cause everybody wants to do their own thing, but yeah, you pretty much play everything, I take it.
>>Yeah, I think growing up in the early 90s when every neighborhood had a band, that was the thing.
Everybody jumped on everything.
It's not that uncommon actually for band members that came up in that era to be able to play three or four instruments on the stage, maybe not professionally or classically trained and all that kind of stuff growing up in the alleys and the streets.
But they're definitely guys that can play congos, drums, a little bit of keyboard, so.
>>You mentioned you started four years ago, which would've put you right in the middle of the COVID outbreak.
How did that affect everything moving forward?
>>You wanna talk about that?
>>It was very painful.
>>Yeah, I mean, I guess for us, we've really much like everybody, had to get creative.
We started doing shows from his kitchen, you know what I'm saying?
And those actually went over well with the fans that kept us in touch with and in tune with the people who come see us all the time, so much so that a few still request those types of concerts to this day after things have opened up.
Financially, it hurt because I'm full time, full time.
Also the band is full time.
Hurt had to go find some jobs, you know what I'm saying?
Some stuff you could do, but you got through it and you keep moving.
And it's just part of the process, part of your journey.
>>Something we could talk about, tell our grandkids about.
>>Yeah, yeah, yeah.
>>And now people are just ready to be out.
So you said you did seven shows over the weekend?
>>We did.
My guy, how many you had last week?
>>Well, I recounted, I had 11.
I had 11.
>>So these are all festivals, club shows?
I mean, people are back out and ready for it.
>>They're ready to party.
It's a blessing.
I'm not complaining, you know what I mean, to be in demand and have people call your phone 'cause there was a time in my life where nobody called the phone, you know what I mean?
So I'm not complaining.
Keep calling, everybody.
(all laughing) >>Quickly.

So, shout out to Mayor Bowser.
It was a big shot in the arm for us, man.
The music has been official, unofficial-official, but the music has been the music of DC, but her making that proclamation and actually making it official on paper, it was a big thing for us because it gives us that sense of pride that we always had kinda underground, you know what I mean?
But when you go to Jamaica and you hear reggae, there's a sense of pride that beams across everybody from the flight attendants to the people that you see in the street, that's their one thing that they can hang their hat on.
And I think for us, now that when you come to DC, anybody that comes to DC, they can kind of understand go-go is the music of DC.
You can either hear it and like it or not hear it, but it's gonna be here.
And that gave us a push on the back that says, y'all go do y'all thing, we got y'all as a city, as an official city.
>>Are you politically involved here in the city?
>>Yeah, I have a non-profit that I started called Go-go Music Collective that is geared towards educating youth about go-go music and just the business of music in general.
But I try not to get too political as far as throwing my name in a hat for anybody.
I don't wanna alienate anybody when I do that, but I do support definitely Kenya McDuffie.
I support my guy, not to say any names.
>>Right.
(John chuckling) >>We gonna see what happens and I support Mayor Bowser also.
>>So what about the Don't Mute DC movement that's going on?
What are your thoughts there?
>>Well, I mean, since the very beginning, and just to give a little history on it, the Don't Mute DC movement started when some guys or a guy that moved here from somewhere else, one block from the Mecca, DHU, came down to the store on Seventh and Florida and complained about go-go music being played and why he did that, I don't know, but it spawned a movement where thousands showed up at the rally, shut the city down and let people know that this is our music and you can't come here from somewhere else and take our houses, take our homes, take our businesses, and then also tell us we can't play our music.
And it was definitely a rallying cry for not just the music, it was intact on the culture.
And when you start taking people's culture, to me, it feels like, it's a strong word, but it feels like slavery.
You know what I mean?
Like all over again.
And that might be a stretch and taking it too far.
But at the end of the day, you can't infringe on people's cultures and the ways of life that they've been celebrating for 40, 50 years.
>>I'm always surprised when people come to a place that they want to live, then they wanna change everything when they get there.
So it's like, well, why did you come here?
Stay where you are.
Same thing happening, Austin, Texas.
They have South by Southwest there.
People moved in, gentrification.
They didn't want to hear the music anymore and the bands playing, but that's what the city's always been.
So you had the same thing here.
I mean, as long as I can remember, late 70s coming through here, I always heard music playing in the city.
And a change of folks shouldn't change that.
>>It's a part of the fabric of the town.
You can even get with it or get gone.
That what my dad say.
>>We could agree with on that.
So where is Sirius Company going?
>>Hopefully to the Grammys.
We wanna make music to expound on what go-go music is viewed as, you know what I mean?
Right now, it's viewed as a regional, city kind of thing.
And although it's been played all over the world, it hasn't been accepted in a way where, I say respected in a way from the masses as some of the other genres.
And I think that that's what I strive for.
To continue to make music to one day get a hit to be able to say we are go-go artists and this is what we do.
