Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipLet's talk about one significant slate of legislation that's going through the Kentucky General Assembly.
I think the fairness chairman had called this slate of hate, beginning with SB 150 that talks about parental rights when it comes to school curriculum, teaching, homosexual human sexuality and student preferred pronoun use.
And we've had some other bills that have evolved that affect the LGBTQ community in recent days.
Yeah, this has really become the theme of this legislative session.
Republican sponsored bills to change really dealing with LGBTQ issues, especially transgender issues.
So we've talked a couple of times about the Senate Bill 150, which changes which keeps schools but teachers are won't be can't be required to use a student's preferred pronouns.
But also this week, a bill that has already gathered about 20 Republican co-sponsors would ban gender transition services for all minors.
And that's a really big deal.
And it's this is just another, you know, another one of these anti-trans pieces of legislation.
A lot of, you know, LGBTQ advocates are pointing out that this, you know, even just talking about these issues, even just having legislation moving through the General Assembly, you know, this makes LGBTQ and trans kids feel like they are not being, you know, welcomed in society.
And of course, this is a group of population that, you know, can be very susceptible to mental health issues from from legislators and politicians talking about it in this way.
So I think that this is something that will look back on this legislative session and realize that all the Republican politicians decided to really rally around this issue.
And it's going to be I think we'll still see how these bills end up turning out.
So this one bill, House bill for 72, has to do with gender transition services.
It's only been assigned to the House Judiciary Committee.
It hasn't gotten a vote yet, but we'll see how many of these end up actually passing by the end.
And we have heard some Republicans who are former state officials, elected officials.
Trey Grayson has written piece is former Kentucky secretary of state saying that these types of measures, not naming a particular measure in particular is a bad case for business.
Right?
That this is not what the business economic development officials and interests want.
And we even heard Bob Hal Ringer, who is a former state Republican lawmaker who testified against SB 150 last week, making the case for civil liberties and those who love freedom.
So we'll keep our eyes on how these arguments develop even within the party.
The Republican Party?
Yeah, I mean, it harkens back to I guess it was 2015 when North Carolina passed the the bathroom bill.
And there a lot of movement around that.
You know, there is so much business of opposition to to passing an exclusive, an exclusionary bill like that.
But I think that's something for so many of these pro-business minded Republicans to think about.
Yeah.
