And tomorrow we head for the hills and explore the mountains.
Tonight, though, we're getting a good night's rest at The Inn at Lynden.
We stayed at The Inn at Lynden, a historic boutique hotel, and yes, those really are bikes in the lobby.
This place does things a little differently, and that's cool.
Terri is an owner, and she's going to tell us about the history of this beautiful building.
Thanks for coming.
Welcome.
We are in The Inn at Lynden, which is in the Waples Mercantile building.
The original building was built in 1914, and it was a very vibrant department store for many, many years.
In 2008, there was a fire.
After some years of it not being fully renovated and it sat.
And then we, redeveloped it in 2015.
And we've been open ten years.
Wonderful.
What makes this hotel so special?
I think the combination of all the amazing tenants, we've got a taphouse, we've got a perfect place for breakfast, Avenue Bread.
We've got Village Books, and we have Cheeks Jeans, which is a women's clothing store.
Ooh.
Plus, we're in.. Super walkable, super bikeable.
And, it's just a great place to be.
It's a nice, small, friendly community.
So tell me, why are there bikes in the lobby?
There's nothing more Dutch than a bike.
And there's an old historic Dutch heritage here.
And, and plus, the best thing about North Whatcom County is its flat, so it's perfect for bicycling.
Absolutely.
And if you stay with us, they're complimentary.
And you just need to check them out and enjoy.
Awesome.
Well, we're headed off on a road trip.
Would you suggest that breakfast place before we leave?
Absolutely.
Alright, went up to my room and suited up for outdoor adventure.
Now it's time for a breakfast of champions.
This is the legendary haystack breakfast.
And this is Humphrey, the general manager here at the Avenue.. Humphrey, what are we looking at here?
So we have our hash browns with caramelized onions and bacon underneath the egg.
Egg of your choice.
Cheddar cheese and avocado for all the protein you could want today.
Yum.
Breakfast of champions.
Let's eat and explore.
We're on the Mount Baker Highway, headed to Artist Point.
If you take this route, you're going to want to stop here .. a permit, souvenir, or even take a restroom break.
You must meet a lot of interesting folks that come through the visitor's center here.
Yes, we sure do.
We have people that come in from all over the world.
We have people from Russia, Germany, Poland, India.
Lots of folks from Canada, and of course, people here in Washington and the Pacific Northwest.
I love to send people up to the Horseshoe Bend trailhead.
It goes along the Nooksack River and it's just gorgeous, walk through the forest, trees, ferns, moss and the rivers flowing right now, so it's just gorgeous.
We've made it 11 miles up the highway and found ourselves here at Horseshoe Bend Trail with resident expert Rebecca.
Hey!
Rebecca, what else can we expect to see along the way?
Well, I could tell you about it.
Or I can show you.
You want to take a walk?
I'd love to.
Let's do it.
Okay.
So this is a great kind of entry level trail.
You can see our beautiful fir trees and our great sword firms.
And a little bit, we'll get a view of the North Fork of the Nooksack River.
We might even see some kayakers if we're lucky.
Oh, nice.
Tell me three random facts about this trail.
So this trail is, let's see it's about two miles out and back.
It's mostly flat, and it's open almost all year round.
Oh, and there's free parking.
Ooh.
Love that.
Awesome.
This trail is outstanding.
What adventures are next for us?
Oh, I'm glad you liked it.
Let's go another five miles up the road and I'll show you Nooksack falls.
Oh, awesome.
Let’s go!
All right, this is so beautiful!
Can you tell me about the falls?
Yeah.
So these are the Nooksack Falls.
They drop over 80ft.
And, it's interesting because if you look, the North Fork comes here down the falls.
And then coming in in this direction is Wells Creek.
And the North Fork actually takes a jog around this viewing area and heads around.
So you kind to get a little bit of a two for one.
This next spot is going to be about 15 miles up .. We're going to drive up to mile 55 and I'll show you Picture Lake.
We'll be able to walk around the lake, and if you look right over there is Mount Shuksan.
What a stunning view.
And now we're off to Artist Point.
The cherry on top.
It's a trailhead.
You can hike to the top of Table Mountain.
You can go backpacking out on the Chain Lakes Trail, and even grandma most of the time can hike the Artist Ridge Trail.
So if you've made it this far, I'd encourage you to stay.
But before we head back, I got one last thing I want to show you.
Welcome to the North Fork Brewery.
This pizzaria is also a beer shrine.
I figure after a great day out exploring, we deserve a treat.
This is my favorite place for pizza and a delicious beverage.
I love it.
Is that a pickle pizza?
Actually it is.
You said you wanted some adventures.
That’s awesome.
I'm Angela.
Thank you for exploring.
I'll see yea.
Cheers.
Cheers.
