They gotta be in here somewhere.

- Jake, what are you doing over there?

I think we're supposed to be starting.

- Oh, well, I was trying to find my sheet music, but I don't have sheet music here, just a pile of french fries.

- I know you're an artist and I love that for you, but even an artist needs organization.

I think it's time we start to talk about it.

(objects clattering) - When we write songs, we're giving our ideas some kind of organization or structure.

- Sure we're trying to be artistic, but we're also trying to present our thoughts in an intentional and clear way.

It's like writing an essay.

- Ooh, and essays (lively guitar music) can often be boiled down into three main sections.

One, two, three.

♪ The intro, state your topic ♪ ♪ What the essay is about ♪ ♪ The body in the middle provides examples and exposition ♪ ♪ We wrap with the conclusion, summarizing what you said ♪ ♪ Three parts to write an essay or make you a song instead ♪ ♪ Three parts to write an essay or make you a song instead ♪ - That was beautiful.

(person crunching) I can't believe we just sang that.

- Well, if you can organize an essay, you can organize a song.

- Or a pile of trash and french fries.

Get out those journals, notebooks, tablets, or phones.

- [Esther] We're gonna look at organizing our ideas a bit to fit into our song.

- [Jake] Just like if we were writing an essay, we want to get our ideas across in a clear and concise manner.

- [Esther] First, you gotta get your topic out there.

That's the subject of our song.

- [Jake] Let's say for the sake of example our topic is friends.

(bell dinging) After deciding on that topic, work on the body of the essay, or in this case, song.

Write out all the information that you want to deliver to your audience about friends.

- [Esther] Friends are with you to journey through life.

- [Jake] Ooh, that could be like journeying through high school.

- [Esther] Or like a journey, like a road trip.

- [Jake] And friends are there to help you.

- [Esther] Maybe in your case, Jake, a friend could help you get a little more organized with your music stuff?

- [Jake] That would be appreciated, friend.

- [Esther] Most of all, having good friends is important.

In fact, the idea is so important that that's the one we're gonna see every chorus.

- [Jake] The chorus being the part of the song that repeats itself.

- [Esther] Songs are probably gonna follow some back and forth, like verse, chorus, verse, chorus.

- [Jake] And every time this chorus comes around, it's reminding folks of your topic and the ideas you're trying to deliver with the very last line they hear acting as the song or essay's conclusion.
