In Colonial America, the group was well known for vandalizing the property of British loyalists.
Originally organized as the Loyal Nine, the Sons of Liberty opposed British policies enacted after the French and Indian War, from effigy burning, riots, and property damage to boycotts and tarring and feathering.
It was common for the group to threaten violence.
Notable members of this underground organization included John Hancock, Samuel Adams, John Adams, Patrick Henry, and Paul Revere.
Unlike their sister group, the Daughters of Liberty who rebelled with non-violence, the Sons of Liberty cost the British Empire almost $1.7 million in damages in today's currency.
