AND WHEN I WALK INTO THE STUDIO STING STANDS UP FROM HIS CHAIR AND HE OPENS HIS ARMS TO GIVE ME A HUG AND I'M JUST LIKE, THIS IS NOT HAPPENING.

AND NOT JUST GETTING WHOOPINGS OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT, BUT MY PARENTS ELOPED AFTER KNOWING EACH OTHER FOR A MONTH.
THEY HAD A CONVERSATION.
MY MOM FLEW TO MEET MY DAD FOR THE FIRST TIME IN PERSON AND THEY GOT MARRIED TWO WEEKS LATER.
AND THAT IS THE GENESIS OF WHO I AM I THINK AS AN INDIVIDUAL AND AS AN ARTIST BECAUSE MY PERSPECTIVE IS REALLY WIDE OPEN AS IT RELATES TO WHAT IS POSSIBLE, WHAT I BELIEVE IN, WHAT CAN HAPPEN.
EVERYTHING IS MAGIC TO ME BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, OF THAT FOUNDATION.
I'D SAY MY FIRST MUSICAL EXPERIENCE, I GREW UP IN BATON ROUGE.
I WAS BORN IN BATON ROUGE AND I GREW UP THERE.
AND I GREW UP WITHOUT ANY EXTENDED FAMILY AROUND ME FOR THE FIRST MAYBE 10 YEARS OF MY LIFE.
IT WAS ONLY A NUCLEUS OF MY BROTHER AND MY SISTER AND MY MOM AND DAD.
WHEN I WAS 10, I MOVED FROM BATON ROUGE TO CINCINNATI WHICH IS WHERE MY MOTHER IS FROM.
SO I GOT MY FIRST TASTE OF EXTENDED FAMILY GOING TO GRANDMA'S HOUSE AND EVERYTHING.
DURING THAT TIME, MY UNCLE EXPOSED MYSELF AND MY BROTHER TO A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS THAT WE MAY NOT BE EXPOSED TO AT HOME.
SO I SAW "BOYS IN THE HOOD" FOR THE FIRST TIME RIGHT?
AND, OTHER THAN BEING MOVED BY THIS MOVIE AT THE END YOU WATCH THE CREDITS AND AT THE END IT SAYS, THAT TREY WENT TO MOREHOUSE AND HIS GIRLFRIEND WENT TO SPELMAN.
AND I'M LIKE, MAN, I WONDER WHAT THOSE SCHOOLS ARE ABOUT.
SO FAST FORWARD, I WENT TO THE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE, RAN TRACK THERE, HAD A GREAT AMOUNT OF EXPERIENCES THERE BUT THE WHOLE TIME, I WAS ITCHING TO GET OUT OF THERE.
AND IT'S FUNNY, BUT MY UNCLE BROUGHT US TO ATLANTA BEFORE HE DROPPED ME OFF AT SCHOOL.
AND I CAME TO MOREHOUSE AND I'M LIKE, OH MY GOD, I NEEDED TO COME HERE, YOU KNOW?
BUT I KNEW I HAD TO GO TO LOUISVILLE.
SO LITERALLY FOR TWO YEARS I JUST THOUGHT ABOUT TRANSFERRING TO MOREHOUSE.
AND IT WAS REALLY A KILL TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE TYPE OF THING BECAUSE AFTER MY SECOND YEAR OF SCHOOL I REALLY KNEW THAT I WANTED TO PURSUE MUSIC PROFESSIONALLY.
I KNEW MY PARENTS WOULDN'T BE IN FAVOR OF ME DROPPING OUTTA SCHOOL.
SO I'M LIKE, OKAY, HOW DO I DO THIS?
SO MOVING TO ATLANTA WAS WHAT MY GOAL WAS AND I KNEW TRANSFERRING WOULD BE SOMETHING THAT THEY WOULD APPROVE OF.
SO IT JUST WORKED OUT SO WELL.
(SOFT GUITAR MUSIC) THE KAMERON CORVET SOUND IS GUITAR BASED I WOULD SAY SIMPLY, BUT TO BE EVEN MORE SPECIFIC, IT'S ACOUSTIC.
YOU KNOW, THAT'S WHERE I WRITE MOST OF MY MATERIAL.
FOR ME THE ACOUSTIC GUITAR IS THAT SPIRIT INSTRUMENT, IF YOU WILL.
IT'S THE THING THAT GETS MY BRAIN MOVING.
IT'S THE THING THAT MAKES MELODIES HAPPEN.
IT'S WHAT I PLAY WHEN I DON'T WANT TO SING.
SO THE SOUND IS BASED IN THE GUITAR.
ACOUSTIC PRIMARILY, ELECTRIC SECONDARILY SPEAKING.
AND THEN FROM THERE IT IS AN EMPHASIS ON THE SONGWRITING, WHICH COMES FROM JUST ALWAYS BEING INSPIRED BY GREAT SONGS.
I DON'T KNOW WHETHER I SHOULD DANCE ON, OR WHETHER I SHOULD JUST WALK ON.
THAT'S LIKE LITERALLY WHAT I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT FOR THE LAST TWENTY FOUR.
BEFORE I HIT THE STAGE, AS MANY TIMES AS I'VE PERFORMED, I CAN BE A LITTLE BIT OF A BASKET CASE.
I'M GONNA BE PACING, DEFINITELY.
PACING LIKE I'M WAITING FOR A BABY TO COME PACING.
(LAUGHS) I TALK TO MYSELF, YOU KNOW, HYPE MYSELF UP.

I REALIZE THAT WHEN I FEEL LIKE I LOOK MY BEST AND I FEEL LIKE I'VE TUNED UP EVERYTHING AND I'M READY TO GO, I'M GONNA GO AND OPERATE IN THAT CONFIDENCE.
AND I THINK CONFIDENCE COMES ACROSS TO THE AUDIENCE.
I'VE SEEN PEOPLE PERFORM BEFORE AND WHEN I WATCH PEOPLE PERFORM, I'M LOOKING TO SEE IF THEY ARE CONFIDENT IN WHAT THEY ARE DOING.
DO THEY BELIEVE?
DO THEY BELIEVE THAT EVERYBODY'S LOOKING AT THEM AND THAT EVERYONE'S HANGING ON EVERY WORD THAT THEY SAY?
AND, IF THEY DON'T, YOU KNOW, WHAT IS IT THAT COULD MAKE THAT EXPERIENCE BETTER?
OR HOW COULD YOU GET CLOSER TO THAT?
SO BEFORE A SHOW, I'M THINKING ABOUT THOSE THINGS.
I'M VISUALIZING THE AUDIENCE BEFORE I EVEN GET ON STAGE, AND JUST REMINDING MYSELF TO LIVE IN THE MOMENT.

AND ONE THING I CAN SAY IS, I HAVE DONE THINGS IN, I DON'T WANNA SAY A CHRONOLOGICAL TYPE OF ORDER, BUT WHEN WE TALK ABOUT STEPS THAT IT TAKES TO GET TO A CERTAIN POINT, I'VE DEFINITELY TRIED TO MAKE SURE THAT I'VE DONE THINGS HONESTLY AS A MUSICIAN AND AN ARTIST.
THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS I PRIDE MYSELF FOR.
GROWING UP LISTENING TO DIFFERENT ARTISTS AND BEING INFLUENCED BY THEM YOU NEVER THINK THAT YOU'RE GONNA BE ABLE TO WORK WITH THEM.
SO, BEING A SONGWRITER, PUTTING OUT INDEPENDENT MUSIC, GETTING FEEDBACK, DOING PERFORMANCES; ALL OF THOSE THINGS WERE BUILDING BLOCKS TO ALLOW ME TO BE IN THE PROPER POSITION, TO HAVE AN ENCOUNTER WITH ONE OF MY HEROES, GORDON SUMNER, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS STING.
AND THE EXPERIENCE WAS REALLY QUITE DIVINE IN THE SENSE THAT NOT UNLIKE ANY OF THE OTHER SONGS THAT I'VE WRITTEN, I SAT DOWN ON THE FLOOR ON A SUNDAY AND TRIED TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAN I NORMALLY DO.
AND I SAID, YOU KNOW WHAT?
I WANT TO BE AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE, AND I WANT TO WRITE A LOVE SONG.
AND WHAT WOULD THAT BE?
NO PEN, NO PHONE, JUST GUITAR.
HOW CAN I WRITE SOMETHING THAT I'M GONNA REMEMBER?
AND I JUST STARTED PLAYING THESE CHORDS.
THIS CHORUS JUST CAME OUT AND I'M LIKE, THIS FEELS GOOD.
IT SOUNDS GOOD.
IT'S EFFORTLESS.
THERE MAY BE SOMETHING TO IT.
I RECORDED IT, YOU KNOW, AT HOME, PASSED IT AROUND TO A COUPLE PEOPLE, GOT SOME FEEDBACK, AND ONE OF MY MOREHOUSE BROTHERS ENDED UP TAKING WHAT I HAD COMPOSED AT THAT TIME, WHICH WAS GUITAR, THE CHORUS, AND ANOTHER PART AT THE END OF THE SONG AND HE ADDED TO THAT.
THIS IS THE THE GREAT THING ABOUT ATLANTA.
EVERYBODY'S BRINGING THEIR EXPERIENCE SO THAT WHEN THEY HEAR THE SAME PIECE OF MUSIC THEY CAN HEAR IT IN SO MANY DIFFERENT WAYS.
SO IN THE SPIRIT OF COLLABORATION MY MOREHOUSE BROTHER ADDED A FEW NUANCES TO THIS PIECE OF MATERIAL, AND HE ENDED UP SPEAKING TO A COLLABORATOR OF HIS, AND HE SHARES IT WITH A, THAT COLLABORATOR WHO HAPPENS TO BE A FREQUENT COLLABORATOR OF SHAGGY.
SHAGGY HEARS THE SONG, LOVES THE SONG.
SO THEN ANOTHER PIECE GETS ADDED.
THEN, MAGICALLY, SHAGGY HAPPENS TO BE IN THE STUDIO IN L.A.
DOING A FEATURE FOR ANOTHER ARTIST FROM FRANCE.
BUT THE FEATURE THAT HE'S WORKING ON IS BEING ORCHESTRATED BY STING'S MANAGER.
STING'S MANAGER ASKED SHAGGY WHAT HE'S BEEN WORKING ON, "...LET ME HEAR SOMETHING NEW".
HE PLAYS THE SONG AT THAT POINT.
HE SAYS, "OH MY GOSH, YOU KNOW WHO WOULD BE GREAT ON THIS?"
AND HE'S LIKE, STING.
HE SENDS IT TO STING.
STING HEARS IT AND DRIVES OVER TO THE STUDIO 45 MINUTES LATER AND THEY START RECORDING.
I STILL HAVE THE PICTURE OF THEM.
STING HAS GOT A BEARD, YOU KNOW, SHAGGY'S HAIR IS LOW AND EVERYTHING.
AND THAT ENDED UP BEING THE CATALYST FOR AN ENTIRE ALBUM.
SO THAT REALLY STARTED THIS JOURNEY FOR THE NEXT 18 MONTHS WHICH WAS ME JUST LEARNING ABOUT THE PROCESS OF RELEASING A SONG AT ITS HIGHEST LEVEL.
SEEING THEM PERFORM THIS SONG ON ALL THE TELEVISION SHOWS.
