But first, let me show you how I spent the night.
In scenic Poulsbo, you're only going to find one hotel on Front Street.
And it's very unique.
And that is Hotel Scandi.
Stephen, can you tell me what makes this hotel so special?
This hotel has been here since 1892.
Wow.
In historic Poulsbo.
It's a nine room hotel.
All second floor here, just off the street.
It's very much in respect of the tradition of Poulsbo’s Norwegian past.
Very steeped in that tradition and we're very proud to support that.
We host many wedding parties and many killer weekend getaways.
Well, it sure worked for me.
Let's go explore the arts.
If you come to Poulsbo, you've got lots to explore.
Coffee shops, wine, beer, famous bakery.
And lots and lots of art.
This is the Front Street Gallery, one of the champions of the second Saturday Artwalk, where you have a chance to meet the artists, which is what we're going to go to right now.
At Front Street Gallery, there's 27 artists who are all local here to Poulsbo.
They all work together in the gallery to support each other.
Alright, we've traveled to the edge of Poulsbo to meet a famous local artist.
She specializes in encaustic art.
What is that?
No idea.
Let's ask her.
Theresa, this is so cool.
Can you tell me about encaustic art?
Sure.
Encaustic art is an ancient art form, over 2000 years old.
It started with the Egyptians.
They were entombing things and people.
And then the Greeks, way back in the B.C years.
They were sealing the hauls on sailboats, and they realized you could paint with it.
And so, you know, it's such an ancient art form with modern day.. And my form primarily is what's known as photo encaustic.
So I generally work and paint 5 to 10 to 20 layers added slowly, one layer at a time over an image.
By about the fifth layer, I can't see what's below, but I freestyle it and I do custom and commission work for collectors around the country.
Incredible, wow.
If someone wanted to start.. what advice would you have for them?
Definitely, it's possible to make a living as a full time working artist and it takes showing up.
I think that's the best thing I can advise anyone, and I, and I have been coaching and teaching with online courses for the last 10 to 12 years, but I always implore everybody, just show up.
Day after day and perseverance always pays off.
So, but you have to love what you're doing.
And when you love it, the energy comes through in your work.
Absolutely.
Would you like to give the encaustic art a try?
I would love to.
Thank you.
Sure.
Let's do it.
I'm Angela.
Thanks for exploring.
I'll see you.
