How was school today?
-It was okay.
-Do you want to invite some friends to our house this weekend?
-Everyone is already going to Jennifer's party.
-Aren't you going to join them?
-I wasn't invited.
[music] Grandma, are you still not tired of hearing the same song every day?
-Ranran, you back home?
-Mom, Ranran, and I bought everything you need for Qingming.
-Oh.
Is everything all right?
-Yes.
-Is the sun too blazing?
-It's fine.
-I'm going to collect the clothes.
-The news says there's no more war in China.
Can we go back to burn the paper money this time?
-Mom.
Why you suddenly mention that?
It's still so chaotic over there.
Besides, wouldn't it be the same if we do it at the same backyard?
This Saturday is spring Equinox.
Let's have dinner together.
You can teach Ranran how to make sweet dumplings.
-No one else I know makes that stuff.
-Are your classmates saying things about you again?
-No, everything is fine.
Mom, Mom, I just got invited.
I got invited to Jennifer's party.
-Oh, that's wonderful.
-Mom, what do you think about this skirt?
-She wants a skirt to wear to the American's party.
-It is indecent.
I can make a Qipao for her.
Ranran, will definitely look beautiful wearing it.
-Grandma will make you a Qipao.
-She doesn't understand anything.
She'll just ruin this for me.
-Grandma used to be a seamstress.
How could she not understand?
Let's eat first.
When is the party?
-Saturday.
-Saturday is the festival.
I am going to teach Ranran how to make sweet dumplings.
-That's why we're celebrating with Grandma.
-I never understand what she says.
-Then you should practice your Chinese more.
-Why can't grandpa learn English?
She's been here for 15 years.
-Ranran, [?].
Mom, this party is a rare opportunity for her.
Let her go.
We can celebrate together on Sunday.
-All right.
I'll make her a Qipao to wear.
She can't wear skirts like that.
-Fine.
[sewing machine sound] -Ranran, come over.
-Grandma spent two days to make the dress.
-Isn't it nice?
-Yes.
-Try it on.
-You look gorgeous.
You look like a movie star.
What do you think, Mama?
It is so beautiful.
Do you like it?
-Yes, I love it.
Thank you, Grandma.
-You should wear it tonight to show your friends.
-I will.
Oh, and can we leave now?
I want to buy Jennifer a gift.
-Yes, have fun.
Don't come back too late.
-I won't.
[music] -Did you see what she was wearing to this party?
-Really.
I can't believe she thought she could wear that.
-[?]
-[laughs] Probably looks cheap.
-Ranran, you already back?
-What happened to the dress?
-I took it off.
-What do you think you are in that skirt?
-I bought this with my own damn money.
-Just leave me alone.
-Ranran, you're being so disrespectful.
-I never even wanted to wear this stupid dress.
-You're such an ungrateful child.
We wasted all these years raising you.
-I don't want to be different, okay.
I was born here, raised here.
Both of you can't even understand that.
-How can you say this to us?
-No, I wish you weren't my family.
-Ranran, I need to talk to you.
-Grandma, how can you speak English?
I thought that you didn't know.
-I learned English when I was in Shanghai.
I've been here for 15 years.
-Then how come you never say it?
-I miss home.
Speaking my native language makes me feel better and closer to it.
I remember where I was born, it was surrounded by marshes, I used to go fishing there every day.
Then the war broke out.
I was separated from my parents.
For years, I was wandering and displaced.
Later, my parents all died, I never went back home.
[music] -I didn't know that.
-Ranran, did anything happen at the party?
-I keep trying to be like them, but they still make fun of me.
-You know what you should say to them, next time they do that to you again, just say fuck off.
[laughter] -Grandma, I'm so sorry about the dress.
I didn mean to ruin it.
-It's okay.
Hey, let's fix it together, okay.
-Yes.
[laughter] -Let's go.
-I actually got it through.
-Yes, exactly because you have sharp eyes.
Here, because you're supposed to.
-Yes, difficult.
[sewing machine nose] -Hi.
-Has she not gotten up yet?
-You can go check on her.
-Ranran, are you awake?
-Just one minute.
-It's so pretty.
-I know.
-You look- -Like a movie star.
-No, no, you're better than that.
[laughter] [music] -Black beans, but black bean, -black sesame.
-Black sesame.
-Makes it all tasty.
-Then you want to do red bean or you want to do with pork?
-Can I do that?
-Yes, you like that?
-I like that.
-Yes, I love this one.
I want a lot.
-I think grandma loves that too, you want to make that one?
-Yes, [?].
-I think it's enough.
[music] -Yes, go ahead.
