(upbeat bright music) Mary Dickson: The Annual Springville Art Festival is an opportunity for the whole family to come out and experience art in Art City itself.
And here to talk more about the event is Springville Public Art Coordinator Leslie Makai Gleaves.
Hi, Leslie.
Welcome.
- Hi, Mary.
Thank you.
- So talk a little about what exactly public art is.
- Yeah, so Springville City is known for our beautiful art museum.
It's the oldest visual art institute in the state.
And the Public Art Department, actually, is an extension of that.
And is bringing art outside of the museum into the community, and really trying to enhance the identity of Springville as Art City, and not just a city with an art museum.
- I like that.
And you do have the most beautiful art museum, I have to say.
So tell me what's gonna happen at the Annual Art Festival that you're hosting.
- So this is our third Annual Art Festival.
And this is an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate all different types of art forms, not just visual art.
So we'll have lots of entertainment with performing arts, dance, and music, and film, and poetry.
And lots of opportunities for the community to interact with art making, and with lots of different types of artists.
- Oh, that's so great.
And it's all on the grounds and inside the museum.
- It's actually out in downtown Springville.
- Oh, it's in downtown?
- Yeah, and we are previewing an upcoming public art project, which is an art walk, an art loop around downtown Springville.
So the events will take place at the Civic Center and expand out into the downtown area.
- Okay.
Okay.
Well, that's good to know.
And I know you're showing a Sundance film.
- Yeah, so Friday night, September 15th, we are going to kick off the Art Festival at our Arts Park with a movie in the park.
And it's a new feature from the 2023 Sundance Film Festival called, "Aliens Abducted My Parents and I Kind of Feel Left Out."
(Mary laughs) So it's a fun, family friendly film, and we just are excited to celebrate the art of film with our community.
- That's great.
I like what you're doing, and it's just so exciting.
You've got so many different things going on.
- Yeah.
It's very fun.
- It will become Art City.
- Yes.
- So thank you for being here, and thanks for what you're doing.
- Thanks, Mary.
- And if you'd like to know more about that upcoming event, The Springville Fall Art Festival, September 15th and 16th, around the town, go to smofa.org.
