Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- Supporting small businesses is so important.
A lot of people have scarified their personal finances and their personal time and it really does require us, as the community, to come through to support them.
It's hard because we also understand that a lot of our patrons are dealing with things too.
Some people have lost their jobs and so they may not have enough to support.
So it's like we're all pulling together with our resources to see what we can do.
(upbeat music) My name is Candace Maiden and I'm the catering director for Squash the Beef Catering.
- My name is Kurtis Williams and I am the executive chef of Squash the Beef Catering.
- Our business is a vegan catering company.
- We try to make those meals that you loved before you became vegan.
And make you vegan and taste it.
- March 15th, we celebrated one year.
Things were going great.
Baby showers, graduations, weddings, which was exciting.
We we had to cancel our anniversary celebration.
We canceled our pop-ups and so that led us to do more takeout, carry-out options.
They pay online, there's no contact with pay or anything.
Kurtis has been cooking up a storm.
(chuckling) We deliver the food to the individual cars.
Some people will just have their trunk open.
We put the food in the trunk.
We know how difficult it is for people to go grocery shopping.
And especially when you're vegan, there aren't a lot of carry-out options.
- It's been really challenging.
It's been great too because we learned how to step outside of our boundaries and still give the people good-quality food.
- It's scary, to be honest with you.
I mean, there's so many uncertainties.
Last year, I was so confident, we had one year under our belts.
I know what I could project but now you can't, those numbers mean nothing.
(chuckling) - I think it's really hard just to stay at home.
I hate staying at home.
I'm always trying to get out and do something different.
- We still work full-time jobs.
I'm a teacher.
So I'm teaching from home, I have a toddler, I'm taking care of my child and it's a lot.
If anything, it makes us better business owners.
Now we kinda understand more about saving and more about having that rainy day fund.
I think we're even more appreciative of customers that are still supporting us through this time.
If we can weather this storm, we know we can weather other storms 'cause it will rain.
(chuckling)
