I think at first, (guitar strumming) I sort of felt like I needed to reject that and just sort of embrace this idea of what I thought a rock and roller was.
And as time has gone on, I've started to realize how theatrical of a medium playing music is, and especially rock music.
And it just took time to really figure out who I wanted to be or what I wanted to communicate on stage.

(audience continues applauding and cheering) So I'd like to tell you how this whole Kiss the Tiger thing got started eight-ish years ago.
I was dancing at Transmission dance night, which is still alive.
(audience cheering) And apparently, Michael saw me.
(laughs) - [Audience] Ah.
- And he said to himself, I gotta go talk to that lady, which he did.
I'm glad he did.
As of a month and a day ago, we've been married.
(Meghan laughs) (audience cheering) (projector clicking) But somewhere very early on in our dating life, he learned that I had a background in theater and that I was a performer.
And he said, "I've always wanted to have a woman sing in one of my bands.
Would you ever wanna (audience member cheering) come jam sometime with some friends?"
So we did.
And Michael's a doer, so a week later, we had a gig at the Nomad.
(laughs) (audience laughing) And we were not ready.
(audience laughing and cheering) And what once was something that I thought was just gonna be a fun hobby has now turned into a big passion- - Yeah!
(audience cheering) - Of our lives.
Sometimes we have to find a way to separate our personal life from our band life because they are very intertwined.

I didn't really write that many songs before I met Michael, and I learned a lot about songwriting from him.
He's loosey-goosey.
(laughs) He has like a freedom to...
He's not afraid to kinda play around and not get things right.

And so I feel like we balance each other out.

(audience applauding and cheering) (guitar tuning) If you've followed our band, which I know there are a lot of people here who've followed along for many years, you know that we've kinda gone through some changes in our lineup.
And especially at the end of last year, we were kinda like in a little bit of a crisis, like, "Oh, God, what's gonna happen?
It's fallin' apart."
It didn't fall apart.
Lynn and Alyse came in and we said, "They saved our band."
(audience cheering) (Meghan chuckles) Sometimes I can go into a situation where everybody working backstage, all of the sound people, are all male-identifying.
And whether or not they're treating me disrespectfully, I think I just have my guard up a little bit because of that.
(mellow guitar music) - [Band Member] Yeah.
- [Meghan] I've just noticed such a huge shift in myself just having that extra representation on stage with me, just like I feel like I can relax a little bit.
I love fronting a band and I love being able to share it with other women on stage.
That empowers me.
It feels like where I belong.

I usually take stock of like who is coming up.
And oftentimes, it is a lot of women, and I don't think that's just like coincidence.
I love all-ages shows because there was like these young, young girls, and they were so cute.
They all bought shirts.
And this one girl was like, "I love seeing powerful girl singers on stage."
(upbeat rock music) That is so significant.
Now you see somebody doing it who maybe looks like you and it'll make you wanna pursue it and do it more.

She's dabbled in like every genre you could imagine.

(audience chattering) In 2018, our lead guitar player wasn't able to go on tour with us to California, so we reached out to this girl, Diane, that Michael had seen online.
We watched some Facebook videos, which I know is kinda dated now.
(mellow guitar music) And long story short, Diane said, "This is what I live for."

(lighthearted banjo music) (projector clicking) - I was born in Alaska, we moved to Hawaii, and then we moved to Minnesota.
And I felt kind of isolated as a kid growing up in Alexandria and Fargo.
Hey, everybody.
(audience cheering) Being, I don't know, a weirdo shy kid who didn't quite fit in, music was such a salvation.
I think music was where I found my power.
(gentle guitar music) ♪ I was born of an island ♪ in Alaska, state 49 ♪ ♪ To a nurse and a ♪ sailor on military time ♪ ♪ The city I was born in ♪ was shut down around '99 ♪ ♪ Now only occupied ♪ by scientists and occasional humankind ♪ ♪ I was nearly a 10-pound baby ♪ ♪ Born on Friday the 13th ♪ ♪ A June Gemini with ♪ a dad from Minnesota ♪ ♪ And a mom from ♪ the Philippines ♪ ♪ In conversation ♪ with a drunk local ♪ ♪ The town of Adak ♪ should've survived ♪ ♪ But its keys were handed ♪ to irresponsible men ♪ ♪ Who let it see ♪ electricity die ♪ ♪ If I had more time and money ♪ ♪ I could see it ♪ with my own eyes ♪ ♪ But I'm happy to be a ♪ thousand miles at sea ♪ ♪ Closer ♪ It's such an incredible experience to perform in front of a band.
It's not for the faint of heart (chuckles) sometimes because you're just putting yourself out there to be judged, you know?
And when you get up there, and you take it on, and then it goes well, and you hear the crowd, it feels amazing.
And as someone who's such a tremendous music fan and is so moved by music, to be able to participate in this way, it's really exciting for me, and I'll never take it for granted.

And some of the best songwriters don't necessarily have all the technical skill, but you just either, you either have soul and heart or you don't.

And some people mistake us for each other.

- But one of the things we share in common is that we really like to talk in accents.

And then the way that Meghan fronts the band with such prestige and such fierceness and such energy that is so undeniable, being a woman lead singer, you can't help but wanna cheerlead other women who are doing it.
(car whooshing) (audience cheering) - Now, this next song, it's kind of the first song that sort of put us on the map here in the city.
And it's crazy (audience members cheering) how one song can really change the trajectory of your career as an artist.
And we've been so fortunate to have such wonderful support from our local community.
That's the only reason we are at where we are today and have possibly the delusion to think maybe we could take this farther.
(laughs) (audience applauding and cheering) For all the wonderful things that we've been able to do, it's hard to sometimes enjoy the success that you're having because you feel like, well, what's the next thing?
