You know, that's the way the little engine failed.

Once upon a time, there was a little red engine.
Oh, and it was the happiest that ever whistling, chugging down the track.
Well, he was happy because the train she pulled was a wonderful train filled with good things for the boys and the girls who lived over on the other side of the mountain.
There were toy animals and giraffes with long necks, teddy bears with almost no neck at all, and even a baby elephant.
Yes, Oh, yes.
And there were dogs too.
Oh, my dogs that could walk and talk.
And also the funniest clown that you ever saw.
Oh, yes.
The other cars of the train.
Why?
They were filled with toy airplanes and kites.
Picture books and puzzles and tops and balls.
Oh, my.
What?
Every kind of toy that a girl or a boy could possibly want?
Yes, but you know, that was not all.
Because some of the cars were filled with all sorts of good things to eat.
Oh, my.
My big golden oranges and red cheeked apples.
Oh, my.
Doesn't that sound delicious, Miss Fran?
Oh.
And there were gold bottles of creamy milk and fresh vegetables and even lollipops and peppermint drops for after Milt reached.
Oh, yes.
Well, you see, I see the little red engine huffed and puffed along the track, happily pulling the train loaded with all of these wonderful things.
Oh, suddenly a terrible thing happened.
Quietly, with a big sigh, she suddenly stopped with a jerk.
She simply could not go another inch.
She tried and tried, but her wheels just would not turn.
Oh my.
Inside the little red engine.
Now, what are all of those good little boys and girls on the other side of the mountain going to do without the wonderful toys to play with and the good food to eat?
Well, wait, what is that?
I hear a clown.
Oh, my.
Here comes a shiny new engine.
Why not ask him to help?
Oh, yes, cried all the other toys as they ran down the track to meet the big, shiny new engine, and had the big engine screaming to a halt.
The clown said, oh, Mr.
Engine, won't you please pull our little train over the mountain?
Why, you see, our engine has broken down, and the boys and girls on the other side of the mountain won't have any toys or food unless you help us.
Oh, you what?
Oh, I pull you.
Why, indeed?
Not just the big, shiny engine.
Whoa!
I am a passenger engine.
And I pull many cars filled with people going to the city.
Me pull the likes of you.
Oh, I indeed, Lord.
Ooh choo choo choo.
Choo choo.
And up he pop to the round house where engines live.
When they are not busy.
Oh, oh, said the little train.
And all of the toys fell Wait!
Cried the monkey.
Here comes another engine, and it's big and strong.
Why?
Let's ask him to help us cook, boy.
And the big strong engine came to a stop.
Oh, please help us, big engine, cried all of the toys.
Won't you please pull our train over the mountain?
Our engine has broken down, and the boys and girls on the other side won't have any toys to play with or food to eat.
If you won't help us.
But the big strong engine snorted.
Why I am a freight engine and I pull big trains loaded with big machines and equipment.
I don't have time for a little train of toys.
Certainly not.
And the big freight engine huffed and puffed off to the roundhouse.
Oh, my.
Not all the toys and the little train were even sadder.
Oh, cheer up, cried the toy clown.
We must try again.
Oh.
Here comes another engine.
Well, he looks very old and tired, but our train is so little that maybe he can help us.
So you see that little toy clown with this flag?
And he tried his best to stop the tired, rusty old engine.
And as the old engine stopped, he shied.
A deep sigh as it came to a stop.
Oh, please.
Kind engine, cried all of the toys.
Will you please pull our train over the mountain?
Well, our engine is broken down, and the children on the other side won't have any toys or food unless you will help us.
But you see the rusty old engine just shy.
So I'm so tired.
I'm just rest my weary wheels.
Why I couldn't pull a train.
Even a small as you over the mountain.
I know I can't.
Oh no I can't.
I know I can.
I'm too tired, old engine mumbled as he shrugged off to the roundhouse.
Oh, now all the toys in the little train began to cry, and they just could not think of any way that they could get over the mountain by morning or.
But just then they heard a whistle.
Well, it wasn't a big whistle, but it did sound happy.
Oh, here comes another engine.
A little blue one!
Cried the clown as he waved his red flag to stop it.
Well, what's the matter, little French?
Call the blue engine.
Oh, my!
Please help us!
Cried the toy.
Our engine is broken down and we have a train load of food and toys for the children on the other side of the mountain, but we can't get it there unless you help us.
Well, I'm not very big, said the little blue engine.
I only switch trains from track to track, and roundhouse yard.
Why, my.
I've never been over the mountain before.
The engine saw the tears in the dog's eyes.
And she thought of all of the children on the other side of the mountain.
Who would not have any toys or food unless she helped them.
So then she began to say.

The little engine sang as she climbed up, up, up the mountain.

Her little wheels turned until at last they reached the top.
And they could see the town in the valley below.

Hooray for the little blue engine!
Shouted the happy toys and as the train happily rolled down the track, the little engine puff sang, I what I want, I know what.
I thought I could, I thought I could, I thought I could, I thought I could I knew I would, I knew I would, I did it, I did it, I thought I could, I thought I could, I thought I could, I thought I could I knew I would, I knew I would, I did it, I did it.
Oh I love that story.

Hey, Miss Fran boy, I sure did like that story about the Little Engine.
You know, made me think, I've been trying to do my alphabet.
I've been trying to learn it.
And sometimes I just think I can't remember all of my alphabet, but, you know, I think I'd like to try it now.
Well, maybe I could sing it for you.

One last one I would like to share with you.
It's about three little pigs.
Have I told you that story before?

Once upon a time, there were three little pigs that went out into the world to seek their fortunes.
Where the first little pig met a man carrying a bundle of straw, and he said, please, sir, would you give me some straw to build myself a house?
Well, the straw house was quickly built, and the little pig was just settling down nicely when a big bad wolf knocked at the door and said, leave it, pig!
Little pig, let me in!
Oh, not by the hair on my chinny chin chin, said the little pig.
Then the big bad wolf huffed and puffed, and he blew the house in, and he ate up the fat little pig.
Oh my.
And that was the end of the first little pig.
Oh, my.
Oui oui oui oui oui.
Well, the second little pig built himself a house of sticks, and he was just putting the finishing touches to the window curtains.
When the big bad wolf knocked at the door and said, no, no, pig, Not me.
Oh, not by the hair on my chinny chin chin, said the less sick little pig.
Well, then I'll huff and puff and I'll blow your house in.
And so he did, and he ate up the second little pig.
And that was the end of that little pig.
Oh, my.
But the third little pig had built himself a house of bricks, and it took him much longer to build than a straw house or a house of sticks took.
And the little pig had just got the last brick in place when the big bad wolf knocked at the door, and said, little pig, let me in.
Oh, not by the hair on my chinny chin chin, said the third little pig.
Great.
Well, then the big bad wolf huffed and puffed.
Oh dear, dear.
But he could not blow the house in.
You see, the little brick house stayed there with the fat little pig safe inside.
It's no good hiding, little pig, said the wolf.
I shall come down your chimney.
Well, come ahead, then, said the little pig.
And he put a big pot of water on the fire to boil it quickly.
Yeah, well, the big bad wolf came down the chimney and landed right in the pot of boiling water.
Well, the third little pig had wolf stew for dinner that night.
And that was the end of the big Jelly beans.

And you know how they flutter around.
In fact, I have a wonderful poem that I always like to remember each year in autumn time.
And maybe you'd like to hear it.

It says the leaves are blowing off the trees and drifting everywhere.
Soon the branches will be left cold and gray and bare, but the winter dress is dim in her widest snow.
And then in spring, the new green leaves all began to grow.
Oh yes, great great great great great.
Oh, my mama, that was a beautiful poem.

Well, you know, I love poems.
Especially when Mama Goose tells it to us.
And it's a lovely poem all about autumn and the colors.
And it is true that it won't be long before it's going to get cold.

It might be too cold, or maybe wet or rainy for us to go out and play sometimes.
