I was on a tour with American Ballet Theatre between LA and San Francisco.
One year I saw the community and I loved the scenic beauty.
And, selfishly I wanted to start in a place that had a lot of artistic quality to the community and was a beautiful scenic place.
So, it was a bit of a selfish motive.
We have our base in Santa Barbara where we do a lot of our main season shows but my goal was to bring the same caliber of dance to communities all over the United States.
And, outreach to our youth and to our senior citizens like we did here in Redlands.
It was wonderful to be at the senior center where they have a childlike quality!
Ballet, opera, symphony has that air of-- slight arrogance and, you know, if you're sophisticated?
But, dance is for everyone.
It really is.

A lot of fun music that we'll all recognize and enjoy.
So, it's really-- it's not Swan Lake!
It's, like, much more accessible with music that we enjoy, and you know.
So this evening, you'll meet Hernan Montenegro.
He is from Chile.
He was a major principal dancer there with the National Ballet in Chile where we actually did a gala not fairly recently.
And, Hernan has been dancing in the New York area for a man named Ethan Stiefel who has did that movie, "Dancers" with a big star of American Ballet Theatre movie that was made.
And, he is-- to get that caliber a dancer is not easy for a company of our size with our budget.
I insist on bringing the best.
And, we also have dancers from like six to seven countries in our company which is another rare thing about my company.

First of all, I was a soccer player.
I was very interested in soccer and the sport part.
And then my dad said, "Hey, Hernan, why don't you try ballet?
"Maybe if you try ballet, you'll be more agile.
You'll have better body, more flexibility, coordination."
And I was like, "Okay, Dad, whatever you say.
I'm gonna try it."
And then, I start my ballet class and I really loved it.
And all this comes from my family because my grandma was a principal ballet dancer in Chile many years ago.
So since we were little, we kind of knew about ballet.
She explains us how ballet was about-- like, what is art about?
And there was something very special with that.
Like, I fell in love with the arts.
Because I love the sports; I love the ballet part.
The art part is something that-- it was in me and then I needed to explore.
In my family, there's four of us that-- we do ballet.
Three of us already professional.
Two of them are in the Ballet Santiago.
And one of them is in the ballet school, so it's really in the family!
When I was 16 years old, I went to an international ballet competition in Peru.
And their Russian teacher, his name is Vladimir Issaev, he saw me and he invited me to his summer intensive program and I decided to go.
And then once I went, I was 17 years old and then he saw me and he said, "I need you for my company.
I want you to stay in America."
And I was like, "wow, "I can't believe I'm having this opportunity.
I'm gonna take it."
