Steve certainly would have become more iconic as a solo male singer had he chosen that path because he was naturally gifted from the get go.
Steve is somebody who should be remembered not only as a great singer, but also as a person who had the ability to uplift all of us in a way that came from his understanding of the human condition.
Anybody that has that much humor in their life is somebody who understands the tragedy and the joys of life.
Eydie- Eydie is somebody who had this stratospheric voice.
You know, people talk about Yma Sumac who had five octaves or Cleo Laine, but Eydie had this- this ability to sing in any number of different ranges and in any number of different styles.
And of course, that was immediately evident in her early success with the song "I'll Take Romance," where suddenly at the end of it, she's going to the stratosphere.
But she never did it to show off.
She did it because it works in the context of what she was singing.
And that's the other important thing, is that when you have a certain kind of ability where you can do all of this and you do this much or this much, and then you show that part when it works for the material, that's another sign of a great artist.
DAVID: From the very start, my parents sang the very best songs from the greatest composers of Tin Pan Alley.

TJ: So excited to be with this man joining us right now.
For years, 25 years, I've tried to be able to present a My Music special with one of my favorite singers of all time, Steve Lawrence, and of course, the great Steve and Eydie, and the mom and dad to our guest, David Lawrence.
David, thank you for being here with us.
DAVID: It's a pleasure.
TJ: This- This is so special for us.
What was it like growing up in this crazy household with your parents?
I mean, it must've been like going to the Catskills.
DAVID: Well, it was mostly good craziness.
The bad craziness usually was right before a recording session or an opening of a Broadway show they had to be in.
So the tensions were high, but other than that, it was a rampant shtick, rampant singing and friends coming in and out.
You know, famous friends, that's- they all were friends.
And so Peter Sellers would come in and Sammy Davis would come in and Frank Sinatra would come in and would be singing, and the orchestrators would be at the piano.
And it's sort of like what you see in these old Judy Garland movies was just like, you know, growing up, that's what it was.
TJ: But David, you know those teen records, we loved them so much.
1950s, your father's like a teen idol.
He comes out and he starts singing these songs, "Footsteps," "Pretty Blue Eyes."
And of course, everybody loves "Go Away Little Girl."
DAVID: You know, my dad was, in- in a lot of ways, a transitional sort of performer because he was still in- in a sort of crooning era, but was able to sing certain types of records in that sort of transitional period where they could start doing songs like "Poinciana" and "Pretty Blue Eyes" and "Go Away Little Girl" and also come back with, you know, "The Two of Us," and "Darn it, Baby" and "Honeymoon is Over."
And it's really thrilling for me to sort of hear that multi- sort of gifted ability of my dad to be able to sort of position his voice in a more of a pop arena and then turn around and swing like nobody's business.
So for me, I still- I look back at it having not been in it in the moment, but the appreciation that I have for what he was able to do and then turn around and just be this unbelievable baritone is what I find most impressive.
He's just versatile.

They started in nightclubs, Of course they were on television and they became ubiquitous on television, apart and then together.
And what they did was take a nightclub act, and it grew and grew and grew as more and more people wanted to see what they did.
And so they had this feeling that they gave the audience that you were sitting in the living room.

And so suddenly there was this dichotomy of people singing what we now call the Great American Songbook, which are standard songs written by Cole Porter and Irving Berlin and Sigmund Romberg, Hoagy Carmichael, Fats Waller.
And then the rock and roll things and the pop novelties that were propagated by Mitch Miller and things like "How Much is That Doggie in the Window" and "Pat Him on the Po-Po" by Bob Merrill.
And so singers were often forced to sing pop songs that they didn't want to sing.
And if they wanted to have a successful career, they had to adhere to that.
And then here are Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormé who artistically stuck to their guns throughout the 1950s on a level that is in itself extraordinary.
Not only that they insisted on focusing on the music that touched them artistically, but also they had pop success in that time, which was not easy to do as things were changing.
However, they had talent and they had the ability to entertain and to reach an audience in a way that was unique.
They were very warm and inviting in what they did on stage and it was out of their love, not only for the music, but also the love of touching people.
CAROL: And they never worked together.
They only did- Steve and Eydie only worked together when they did their own specials, but they would work separately on- when they were guests on variety shows and all.
And then they got to know Eydie and Steve when- Ah, well, not only as performers, but as friends.

Television was- was so free they would put together these massive productions with musical numbers, dancing, costumes, all for a single evening of entertainment.
