I'm your host, George Worrell Today we are at Stitch Sew Shop.
You know, fashion begins with se So we're going to learn all there is to know about sewing fabrics and patterns.
I've been sewing since I was a so this is going to be exciting Hopefully it's for you.
Come on inside.
Come.
Hi.
All right, I was there.
Me?
Hey, Janice Hey, Im doing well!
I always lo How are you?
I'm doing well How are you?
Good, good, good, g Thank you for taking me and talk about the tour and talking about something tha dear to my heart, which is fashi I love that.
And I always think that it always starts here.
And when I say here with pattern and in a vision, so when customers come in the fi where do you guide them.
So it depends.
We have a lot of beginners come who are looking to to start at the very beginnin And so pattern aren't even on their radar yet.
So that is where we have to kind fill out the customer and see wh that they're looking for.
A lot of them want to go straigh for the fabric.
Yeah.
So but with that color here, li my mind is like, I want that dre I want to make this I want to ma Is that what the pattern is Is that what the pattern does.
So, these are all patterns that are preprinted.
for some people it will recommen the chocolate notch patterns because they have a more inclusive size range.
But the chalk and notch for inst and the cashmere at also have include with the pattern's adjustments you can make for different bust bicep sizes, things that you can't get with ready made clothes and that are even uncommo with some of the, the older patt or some of your like bigger patt that you're used to to seeing when you go t I guess with the big box sewing So do you pick the material firs or the pattern first?
It all depends.
It all depends.
Some people will come i and they will fall in love with and know that they just have to And they may have a pattern vagu in mind or a sense of their own And then some people come in and they're like, I am going to a summer weddin and I want to make that sun dres So when we come down here so what's down here.
So as we get down her we get into the actual textiles.
And so this firs half of the store is our woven f if I pick this, do I need to mat How do I match the thread.
So the easiest way to match the Is to pick a few colors that you thin and actually pull out a single t Okay.
So a lot of people will come ove to the thread thing and they'll come over to their f and they'll be like.
Okay.
It's that one.
No, but that's not how you put t You only see it in a single stra So the best thing to do is to be a natural light.
Pull out a single strand and se well it disappears into the fabr Assuming your goal is to have t be invisible, some some things and some people really like, the thread as an accent.
And so they call it a contrast.
So I'm thinking the middle one.
And your inclination is right.
We might have a closer.
Closer match, but does it have to exactly.
Match doesn't whenever you'r trying to pick between two color that are on either side, dark an but are in the right tone?
The darke one is usually the better choice because it disappears better than the lighter one.
Do you find tha your client base can find this t in coming in and just seeing, yo one of the things that I noticed I talk about this, the I, sober, recovering alcoholic with 30 yea we celebrate it yesterday.
I'm very happy about that.
But when I would go to meetings I would see a young woman sewing And, you know she would be listening and parti But I just thought wow that is s you know like you're in it.
But it's so you see people knittin or doing something with their ha That's creative.
That is therapeutic.
That keeps you calm and center.
Do you find.
That.
We do.
And, when we take a tour of the you'll also see tha we have a good selection of embr And that is something that peopl seeking when they're looking for somethi to do with their hands.
We've had people who, both men and women alike, who take this up as a form of dealing with PTSD.
It's getting into a state of flo with those.
Long straigh seams, the rhythm that ironing, all can contribute to just an ov sense of being involved with something and the something beautiful at the end.
So yes, we do see that, and we people who get very frustrated.
And we have to remind the that this was supposed to be fun I have not done this since Abraham Lincoln and I were in school.
I was on.
Have a seat.
Okay, so.
This is where we.
This is where our students woul or during an individual lesson.
And the most important thing to is to promise not to compare you to somebody else or to where yo you should be okay in your skill Okay.
Okay.
Because it's.
That's discouraging.
Yeah.
That's not what we're here We're here for you to to come f where you are to where you want Okay.
So this is a machine.
This is a Bernina.
Once we take away all of the car the inside of the machines are very similar.
So a lot of what you learn with threading the machine today is applicable to a majority of machines.
This is the heart.
That's this intersection.
Here is where the needle goes.
O And we've already got that loaded.
Okay.
Needle plate.
This is where the bobbin goes.
So the bobbin is going to be this this okay.
And the bobbin holds the thread.
The bobbin has some of the threa The other thread is coming from So this is what people are mostly familiar with.
So you have thread coming from t and thread coming from the botto at the same time.
you ever find that people make oh, my God, I can't see the need They get a little frustrated.
Who do you.
You bring them back around.
So the reality is tha the eye of the needle is small.
And we do actually keep readin glasses on hand in case people n threading it.
And the machines often come with a threader and that to help people is okay.
But really, the machine seems co And part of that is because I'v through everything step by step.
But it's just like a math proble You end up doing most of it in after you've practiced a few tim And that's, that's what happens at the machine.
The machine is just it's a tool.
It's an extension of you.
You're just learning the basics.
So it's not that it's hard or co it's just new.
So that's that's kind of where we are meeting our customers.
Okay.
But everything that they do is going to seem hard or scary.
But it's not.
It's just it's not it's.
New.
And sometimes that's wh I told you caution you at the be not to compare yourself because people think.
Oh, okay, how.
Hard can it.
Be?
Yeah.
It's a straight line.
And then it doesn't go straight and they get upset.
Yeah.
No, you just do it again.
Okay.
It's fine.
Practice makes Practice makes progress.
Yeah.
Not perfect.
It makes progress.
Okay.
So my mom's birthday is coming u Can we make something right now?
Like a dress?
Like a. Dress?
Yeah.
So I love that you want to, like really stretch yourself.
I don't think we're at dress yet let's start.
Let's start.
From.
Okay.
It'll be from you.
She'll love it anyway.
Okay.
So before we make something let's actually do a couple of se This is just a practice piece of hit that pedal.
Okay.
Go harder.
There you go.
All the way to the end.
Come on now.
Here.
That's right.
we would use all of these concep to make a pincushion, but I know you want to get to the fun part which is playing with the stuffi Okay.
Okay.
Oh.
Ready?
All right.
So at the end of, our intro clas Beginner.
Is i the first class in the beginner Or when we just do a one on one We start with what we did here.
Learning about the machine and stitches on a single piece of fa And then what you're looking at basically is ingredients.
Just like when you cook or bake.
So these are the raw ingredients You got your thread, your needle, your fabric and your favorite part the stuff Okay.
And we put those together and we make a pincushion.
Now what this is with this is already been sewn.
What you'll see here is what we no show zone.
Because if we show it all the w we wouldn't be able to flip it right side out.
Why do we s on the wrong side of the fabric.
That way when we flip it right s all of your.
All the seams, right.
You don't see the, the seams.
Ok And this is called a point turne And this is what helps us get nice sharp corners.
So all you're going to do is fee this whole thing through itself.
So turn that right side out for And then we'll use the point tur to do.
The whole.
Whole thing.
Okay.
Okay.
So I'll show you.
With hands together.
So you want the side seam changes.
And a lot of people will as well how much stuffing do I use.
How firm do I need.
Oh, wow.
Oka And it's it all depend on how firm you want to make it.
If you want to use it as, you k a tiny pillow for your lovely we ring to sit on or for your tiny to rest their head upon.
Don't put very much stuffing in.
You want to make it floppy, but if you want it to be an effective pincushion, you'r going to want to stuff it pretty Okay.
So this is not sharp.
It's a rounded edge but I can get it in there and us to manipulate those corners out.
So that'll be nice and sharp.
When we go to stuff it.
So if you'll do those bottom two corners for me.
Okay.
Just kind of push them out Yep.
Okay.
And where's the other corner?
Oh, here.
Yep.
Easier.
Okay.
And how do you know when you've on the side?
It looks good.
Ha!
And it looks even.
Okay.
All rig So then it's stuffing.
Now you can't just, like stuffed the whole thing in there So you just want to kind of pull And then jab in a little bit at a time making sure you push it all the way into the, the corner Okay.
Oh so fill your corners first or at least I do.
And then fill in the middle part with as much as you want.
And then our last ste would be to hand sew it closed with what we call a whip stitch.
What is it called?
A whip stitch Whip.
Sure.
Okay.
Wow.
And maybe I'll save a little bit And then you have this one.
Make some afro puff for the side for a retro party.
I'm going to put some white on t Yeah.
So.
Okay, I think there's enough Okay.
You think?
Yeah.
Works for this has been amazing for me and I'm hopin that it's been amazing for our v Janice, you have been amazing b through and giving us this refre I have really enjoyed i and I'm probably going to go hom And so but for now I'm going to finish my pincushio and hopefully you out there, we'll start sewing and we'll see you soon.
Well, I have my pin cushion.
I've enjoyed my time here toda and we talked about slowing down I'm looking forwar to going to our next stop in Nei Favorit which is Pauline Books and Media It's a place of faith.
We're going to have some fun.
I think you're going to really e Hello.
How are.
You?
Thank you.
Sister Good to see you.
Good to see you.
Yeah.
Listen, I heard I stopped by las and we were looking for places for neighborhoods and to talk ab And, you know, I'm a great lover And I looked in the window, and I came in, and I'm like, there's Sister Joan was here.
Yeah.
And I had such a wonderful feeli that I wanted to share what the book store, is about, where it is, what you do, the history, all that kind of stuff.
So could you take the tour that you gave me?
Can we take our viewers on a tou Absolutely.
I would love it.
Where would you like to start?
Well, I don't know.
We can start right her and then just go around the book Yeah.
I'm telling you.
All right, over here then.
Is that, the children's corner, which is really popular.
Okay.
We have board books for kids and all the different age levels but it gives that, it gives the a way to introduce the children and to their faith.
Okay Because a lot of times they're a Where do I start?
What do I do?
So you can start really, really you know, all the way on up to t So, you know, jus just a way to share the faith an And one of the reasons I mean, I was pleasantly surpris that, nuns were running the book But I also got the impression, you don't have to be a person of You don't have to be.
You don't There's no criteria to come in, but it's something that is offered, that I think that I felt.
Yeah.
Speaking with Sister Joan is in talking with you.
That it.
It's a human experience.
And, So was that in mind about P But, you know, the.
Thing is, we're quintessentially Okay, so that' so I think that's what makes peo very much at home with u because we're your sisters as we So we accept everybody exactly where they are.
Okay.
And people are at all differen stages of their, you know, their So wherever they happen to be, they're welcome here.
So, you know, perfect.
And actually you would feel that, right?
Yeah Well, at home.
Yeah, I do feel it.
I like this.
So there's this.
Why be Catholic?
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, there's yeah there's there's a lot of differe Like I said, some people want s like like this, like basic catec Give me something basic.
Okay.
Then somebody else wants Thomas You know, somethin that's a little bit more advance So it just depends on what the person's needs are and what they've read already what the what their interest is.
And your client base is people w people like m who are just walking by everybod Yeah.
So you're prepared So you're prepared.
Exactly.
Yea I didn't know what Pauline meant So could you tell us the mission of the bookstore?
Paul, Pauline is is most peopl say Pauline because they're fami with the woman's name, Pauline.
But it's actually Paulin because the, the daughters in Sa It's, you know, it' the mission of Saint Paul the Ap So that's why it's called Paulin So it's Pauline.
Exactly.
It used to be, you know the Daughters of Saint Paul book However, you know, we're in dif countries and in different count It's last.
Pauline.
Pauline.
So it you know, so w we went along with the other cou and everybody says Pauline.
Oh, so you get it all okay.
It's actually Pauline is.
Paulin Connection with the apostle Paul And that's basically what our mi is like to be to, to be in, to do what Paul would do if he today, which is back in his day.
He had parchments and he ran, h he took all these trips and ever He did what he was, what was po to do back in the early Christia But now, with all the means that of communicating the gospel, we started back in 1915 with th press, you know, just with books And then as it got as it progres we added on films and records and television and things like that.
So it's it's it grows.
And that's what our founder said He said, you know, your missio will never grow old because what new means come out to communicat you use it for the gospel.
And so that's what that's what we try to do.
Oh, wow.
That's a great mission I know.
Right.
So I want to look at some of the and how you choose them.
How do you choose the book that in the selections that you Well, actually it's the books are, selected and sometimes the sisters themse will say I, you know, I heard this book cam or that book came out, but it's, the kind of goes through a board a review board at our convent in Boston, which is lik the central location that we hav And these are sisters that are you know, to like in different d through the books.
So this way, when the books finally come to us, it's like they're absolutely certain ther you know, they're bona fide, so So people that come into our boo they know that whatever is in the book cente is, you know, going to be on the is it's not going to have anythi strange or.
It's like that.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah It's like you ca you can rest assured that it's i It's really good for you, for you and your family.
So I want to see you have, gift Yeah, we have, we have gift book One at one of the gift book that is really popular is drinki with the Saints.
You know, where there's cookbook Vatican cookbooks.
There's all kinds of, you know, so, as I said, you know, peopl come in and, sometimes they'll s I have a friend and I'm not rea you know, you're not too religio And what would you have?
And so you want to have somethin for everybody, which is, like I said, you have that are safe to give anybody.
And then you have you know, Thomas Aquinas in the you it's that's all different ne that people have.
And we have a book that you know, would help.
I think the most exciting par that I've heard is about the cha that you have upstairs.
Is it possible to see.
I. Don't want to miss that.
I mi You gotta show me.
Yeah.
This wa It's like the captain's up.
Well, I'm looking forward to thi There's my friend, Sister Joan.
How are you?
Thank you for making all of this You'r very welcome.
This is such a coo I want dinner next time.
Okay.
Yeah, we're up for that.
Yeah, it's a certain time.
Like, do you guys like it?
Six, seven?
Yeah, we're pretty regimented, b Yeah.
I'm cool.
Yeah.
I'll give a call.
Yeah.
Good seeing you like it.
All right.
Sister Kathryn, thank you so much for bringing us upstairs.
I understand this is the chapel and you're going to tell us all and how people who are coming t bookstore have access to coming Yeah.
So where are we now?
Because this is so beautiful.
Right no we're at the heart of the chapel but we're also at the heart of our bookstore.
Okay.
Book center and many time when people are coming to the bo they're coming with a heavy hea or they're looking for guidance, or they're looking fo meaning for themselves or their And, so after we kind of help th you know, the good stuff on the human level, we often invite them her because, in the Blessed Sacramen we believ and Jesus truly is present here.
Body blood, soul and divinity, just in a sense, as he was when he walked, in, in And we we really need to know that Jesus is there for us, that he cares about us and he hears us.
And that's what this chapel's all about, right?
So it's any faith anyone just searching or just sa I need some quiet time just to c I think a lot of people come in on their lunch breaks.
You know they just take a moment to God i They can breath and they can just be for a momen and to be in this place of great Wonderful.
And I understand that we have s that you're going to tell me abo like here.
What do we have here?
This is a statue of Mary, Queen of the apostles.
And it was actually created by our founder.
And most of the time when you s of Mary, she's holding Jesus to But our father didn't want that.
He wanted us.
You wanted him.
He wanted a statue of Mary that represented what we were meant to do which was to give Jesus to the w And so in this statue Mary is actually holding Jesus o which is what she did all in her you know, at the visitation, to the shepherds for the Magi, she was presenting Jesus.
And that's what we're called to That is wonderful.
And it's intimate, but it's miss When I was when I came and I sa these are the most unique blinds Can you explain this Can we walk over and.
Yes.
Yes.
And you explained that they're not just blinds, but.
What?
It's like a work of art.
It is.
And it actually represents what we have on our emblem.
Okay.
A lot of people say, can I get t I said, not until you enter the but on one side here, you see, a radio towe You see the gospel.
You see images of media.
Because that is what we're mean to give the Word of God through So we have that on one side of o And when you turn it over on the other side, there is a statue or, an image of Saint Paul.
And it says in Latin, according to my gospel, because Saint Paul was able to s I live the gospel and I'm inviting you to live the the way I live it.
And that's really like the inne the spiritual call of our missio Well, I love that.
And thank you so much for showi this wonderful, wonderful place.
When you walk in, there's a real And, I thank you for your commit and for taking the time to show Yeah.
Thank you.
Wow, that was great.
Oh, right.
Yeah.
Oh, it's.
Yeah.
It's really.
That is like the jewel in the cr It's like the oasis on King Stre Everybody knows that.
It's the.
And for the sisters to have.
That's the.
That's the one thing, out of ev that we want to share with peopl is that kind of peace?
I thank you I thank you for opening up every I'm coming back and I'm definitely coming back f I hope so.
All right.
Bye bye.
I want to thank Caroline for showing us ways to relax through the book world here and now in Sanford, V right here on King Street.
We had a wonderful time visiting them and stitch.
