My mom started in the agriculture field.
Right now my mom is a surgical custodian here at the San Luis Valley Health Care, and my dad is working with Mountain King potatoes.
They need to bag the potatoes, pick out the potatoes, box the potatoes.
If it's a pretty busy day, they would get off at like 10 or 11 pm.
It's a good job.
It's a good, stable job.
But my dad wants my siblings and I to be able to say, “Oh, I have this work.
” They want us to be able to expand our education so we can expand our job opportunities.

You dont know?
Thats not good.
You got to learn, ok?
Growing up, I did have to carry big responsibilities.
At the age of six, my mom was teaching me how to change diapers, make formula milk, how to take care of my siblings when they're sick, when they're hungry, when they need a shower, when they want to play.
Especially when my parents would work the night shifts, we would stay home alone, locking all the doors, making sure the windows were locked.

-No.
-Tell papa to wash his hands.
Seeing like, okay, my parents are working, I need to step up.
It's not that I have to.
Its I need to step up to be able to be a second mom to my siblings.
My parents hopes for my future is to be able to graduate a university, especially college.
I decided to go to college because I knew I wanted more in my life, and just because of all the struggles I saw my parents go through.
I got accepted into the program called CAMP, College Assistance Migrant Program and they were able to pay for my first year of college.
The College Assistance Migrant Program is a federally funded program to support students in their first year of college that come from a migrant, seasonal or agricultural background.
We provide financial, academic and social emotional support for our students.
Some of our students, their parents came from Guatemala or Mexico or a lot of them have traveled from place to place here in the San Luis Valley, doing migrant seasonal farm work We see that a lot with our students is the feeling and the need to to provide for their siblings, for their elderly grandparents or helping out financially around the house.
So we really want to alleviate need to work their first year of college.
I think all of us want to make our parents proud because of the work that they put in for us to be here.
And so this is a good opportunity for us to show to them that we can make them proud.
I think another big misconception is that we're very like, we're not intelligent.
I feel like it's a misconception and its a stereotype is that most brown people, most brown kids, were not worthy of being here.
Its kind of like up to us to break that misconception or break that stereotype, like we can show them, you know, that we can do it.
So I'm majoring in Spanish and I want to become an interpreter or translator, more in the legal field like courts, immigration courts, because I see it as a bridge between two worlds.
I do want to set the example for my siblings, like, no matter how many situations you go through, no matter how many times you want to give up on yourself, no matter how many times you say, “I can't do this, ” “I don't want to do this, ” I put in their heads like you have to.
You need to.
I want to be able to work my job that I've been dreaming of and save up to go see what the world has to offer.
My life here is my family chapter and my independent chapter, but I want to I want to be able to, like, move out of the country and say, “This is my life now.
” Like, this is just me here doing what I'm wanting to do, doing what I've always dreamed of doing.
When life gives you a house, move it.
