And every morning, five days a week, the Sturgeon get their meal.
Today I have the responsibility of feeding them.
We actually feed these fish by hand.
We have over 1000 animals in our building and all of their food gets prepped behind the scenes in our animal care kitchen.
The sturgeon get 700 grams of smelt each feed.
We have six different species.
Sturgeon don't have teeth.
They have cartilage mouths act like a sucker.
And so when they eat, it's like a vacuum cleaner and they slurp that food right in There are 29 species of sturgeon in the world.
Six of them are represented here in our touch pool.
In the 1970s, there was no evidence of Lake Sturgeon left in Western Lake Superior.
We're on our way to recovery.
Lake Sturgeon aren't fully recovered in Western Lake Superior, but we're seeing through the efforts of habitat remediation and stocking that those sturgeon are starting to come back to our area.
