(upbeat music) - The Rape Recovery Center offers free confidential support for survivors of sexual violence.
Executive Director, Gary Scheller, joins us to talk about how the center is making a difference.
Hello Gary, thank you for being here.
So, I know you do a lot of things and why don't you give us an idea of the broader services you provide.
- Okay, so for 51 years now, the Rape Recovery Center has been serving Salt Lake County and most recently moving into Tooele County.
But the primary service and the original service that started was responding to the hospital when survivors report there to report that they've been raped and have evidence collected for that.
And so our team will show up 24/7, 365.
When they're there, meet them there to support them through that process, assist them with any, you know, immediate needs they have.
Oftentimes clothing is taken for evidence and so they will have a fresh set of new clothing for them to leave in as opposed to a hospital gown.
They can then refer them to our advocacy program in the office and that program can support somebody through, if they choose to report to police or go through a prosecution process, they can support them through that and keep everything that they are told 100% confidential, right?
Then we also have clinical services where clients can receive, free of charge, individual mental health counseling and group mental health counseling groups in there.
And then we also have a robust prevention and education program where we can get into the schools and do some healthy relationships, positive boundaries type education with the youth to try to prevent future rape and sexual assault.
- So you do a lot of good, I know.
And you also have a 24 hour hotline.
- Yeah.
- So.
- We do.
And, a very robust website, right?
So you can go right onto the website as well.
- Well, great.
Well thank you for all you do.
Thank you for being here.
- Thank you.
- And if you'd like to know more about the Rape Recovery Center, you can go to raperecoverycenter.org.
That's raperecoverycenter.org.
The 24 hour hotline, 801-736-4356.
And that gets you both English and Spanish.
I'm Mary Dickson, thanks for watching "Contact."
