Court rules ghost guns should have serial numbers, sales receipts, background checks
In a 7-2 decision, the justices agreed that the guns -- which can be assembled relatively easily from kits -- should be subject to requirements for serial numbers, sales receipts and background checks, as are other commercially bought firearms. The justices said the guns are designed to be used as firearms, and therefore should be subject to the same rules and regulations.

Seven justices agreed that ghost guns should be subject to serial numbers, sales receipts and background checks in order to purchase the weapons, saying that the guns, which can be assembled relatively easily at home, are designed to be used as firearms and therefore are subject to the same rules and regulations as commercially sold guns.
According to the 1968 Gun Control Act.
Two judges dissented in today's opinion Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas.
The case was brought by the former Solicitor General, who pointed to the 19,000 ghost gun submitted for tracing by police departments in 2021, a massive increase from only 1800 in 2016.
The ruling comes after the conservative court recently upheld a ban on gun possession by those with domestic violence restraining orders against them.
But other rulings have been to expand gun access, like the 2022 Bruen case that ruled against New York's strict concealed carry law and the high court's overturning of a ban on bump stocks last year.
