A Minnesota Institution
"Almanac" is a Minnesota institution that has occupied the 7:00 p.m. timeslot on Friday nights for more than 30 years. It is the longest-running primetime TV program ever in the region.Providing Support for PBS.org

THERE WERE CALLS FOR CHANGE, FOR US ALL TO DO BETTER, IN CORPORATE BOARDROOMS, THE HIGHEST HALLS OF POWER AND AT KITCHEN TABLES ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
YET THESE YEARS LATER, I KNOW THERE ARE PEOPLE THINKING, “DO WE REALLY HAVE TO KEEP TALKING ABOUT THIS?” IT IS SO UNCOMFORTABLE.
I STILL DON’T KNOW THE RIGHT THINGS TO SAY AND I DON’T WANT TO OFFEND SOMEONE.
LET’S JUST MOVE ON.
EARLIER THIS YEAR, I INTERVIEWED MINNESOTA’S OWN MICHELE NORRIS, THE AWARD-WINNING JOURNALIST AND AUTHOR OF “OUR HIDDEN CONVERSATIONS.” HER MESSAGE WAS, IF WE’RE REALLY COMMITTED TO US ALL LIVING AND THRIVING TOGETHER, WE HAVE TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO KEEP LISTENING AND TALKING TO EACH OTHER.
>> IF WE'RE DOING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO LISTEN TO ACH N THE, WE NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO DO IT IN SPACES LIKE THIS, IN COMMUNITIES, IN THE WORKPLACE, WE NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO DO IT SOMETIMES IN OUR FAMILIES BECAUSE, I MEAN, YOU'VE ALL BEEN TO THANKSGIVING WHERE SOME -- YOU KNOW, COME ON, NOW, RIGHT?
YOU KNOW, SO WE NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO DO THAT AND ALTHOUGH WE'RE LOOKING FOR PLACES WHERE WE CAN SPEAK WITHOUT REBUKE, WE ALSO HAVE TO GET USED TO STAYING IN SPACES WHEN THERE IS REBUKE.
AND FIGURING OUT HOW TO KEEP PEOPLE AT THE TABLE EACH WHEN THINGS GET A LITTLE HOCKEY AND PART OF THAT ALSO IS TELLING PEOPLE AT THE OUTSET, IT MIGHT GET A LITTLE ROCKY.
AND THAT'S OKAY.
PEOPLE ARE LOOKING FOR SAFE SPACES.
WHAT I HAVE LEARNED IS THAT WE NEED TO LOOK FOR BRAVE SPACES.
>> TANE: SO PULL UP A SEAT AT THE TABLE.
SET SOME GROUND RULES, AND THEN HAVE A CONVERSATION THAT SCARES YOU A LITTLE.
IT’LL BE UNCOMFORTABLE AT TIMES, AND WE WILL ALL GET SOME THINGS WRONG.
BUT ABOVE ALL, STAY AT THE TABLE.
AND I PROMISE YOU, YOU WILL LEARN THINGS, YOU WILL DEVELOP DEEPER RELATIONSHIPS, AND YOU’LL HELP BUILD THAT WORLD WHERE WE CAN ALL LIVE AND THRIVE TOGETHER.
