Humanities Ambassador John Boyack is here to talk about the Gateway to Learning Educator Workshops.
Hi, John.
- Hello, Mary.
- Thanks for being here.
I love that you're a humanities ambassador.
- So I am, I'm sort of representing the dean's office and helping out at the Tanner Humanities Center where I can, and this summer, we're prepping for our Gateway to Learning Educator Workshops and just desperately trying to get the word out to K through 12 educators all across the state.
So thank you for having us.
- Oh, you are so welcome.
I hope they're listening , and they can get college credit for this as well, right?
- Absolutely, and ironically, the last time we talked about it, and the world is occupied with inflation numbers across the board, the price has not changed for these workshops.
It's a great deal.
$50 to get in.
If you want to apply for college credit at the University of Utah, you can do so for an additional $50.
So it is professional education to help teachers promote student engagement, to develop curriculum, to improve pedagogy across the state.
And yeah, an opportunity to also work toward another advanced degree as well.
- I mean, it's a great program you've got.
And the Tanner Humanities Center is wonderful.
- Yeah, so since 1990, the workshops have been going on.
We pull faculty from the college to lead these courses, but sometimes we reach beyond that.
And so we've dipped down in the community for some of our new instructors for the workshop topics this summer, which is great.
Partnerships with the Tracy Aviary.
We'll be talking about kind of the... We have one of the highest populations of Pacific Islanders right here in Salt Lake.
How in the world did they wind up in the middle of the desert here?
So that diaspora conversation is important for the people here and for our educators.
We'll be talking about teaching language arts in the age of ChatGPT.
I mean, how do you do that in the classroom these days?
So looking forward to a great summer.
- Anyway, wonderful you're doing it.
And thanks for being here.
Thank you.
- Yeah, my pleasure.
