IN OUR FIRST SEGMENT WE DIVE INTO AN ART FORM THAT DATES BACK TO THE NEOLITHIC TIMES.
A LOCAL TATTOO ARTIST DIGS INTO ITS ORIGINS WITH DEEP MEANING IN HER PRACTICE OF THIS ANCIENT ART FORM.
HER WORK RECOGNIZES THAT WE HAVE ONE LIFE AND ONE BODY.

SO THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT WAYS THAT TATTOOS CAN, YOU KNOW, MAKE YOU FEEL AND MAKE OTHER PEOPLE FEEL.
YOU KNOW, IT CAN KIND OF SEND A MESSAGE IN A WAY.
MY NAME IS CHRIS KIRKPATRICK.
I AM FROM COLUMBUS, OHIO.
I MEAN, I GREW UP IN NATURE A LOT.
I ALSO GREW UP READING A BUNCH OF FAIRY TALES.
SO YEAH, JUST KIND OF GETTING LOST IN THOSE WORLDS OF JUST FANTASY AND NATURE AND MAGIC.
I DEFINITELY STARTED MY SKETCHBOOK.
I DON'T USE AN iPAD AT ALL.
I'M VERY OLD SCHOOL WHEN IT COMES TO THAT.
I DON'T DO THE TECHNOLOGY THING SUPER WELL.
I JUST START OFF WITH A SKETCH IN MY SKETCHBOOK.
WHEN THEY COME INTO THE SHOP, I TAKE THAT DRAWING AND MAKE SURE THEY LIKE IT.
YOU KNOW, IF IT FITS WHERE IT'S SUPPOSED TO FIT.
AND THEN I MAKE A STENCIL OUT OF IT.
AFTER I PUT THE STENCIL ON I ALWAYS TELL SOMEONE TO LIVE IN IT FOR A LITTLE BIT WHILE I'M CELTING UP, KIND OF LOOK IN THE MIRROR AND MOVE AROUND JUST TO SEE HOW IT LOOKS FROM DIFFERENT ANGLES.
MUSH CRAFT IS A MUSHROOM PHOTOGRAPHY INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT THAT I RUN WITH RYAN, MY BOYFRIEND.
WE GO OUT ON A HIKE AND PRETTY MUCH IMMEDIATELY WE START LOOKING FOR MUSHROOMS.
WE TRY TO GET OUR FUN GOGGLES ON.
WELL, WE JUST SAW FOR THE FIRST TIME LIKE A FEW WEEKS AGO IT WAS JUST LIKE A LITTLE -- IT WAS LIKE A BREAD ROLL.
YEAH, WE HAD NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE.
AND THEN WE IDENTIFIED IT.
AND THEN WE'VE JUST WATCHED IT GROW.
SAME WITH THIS ONE.
THIS STARTED OFF AS A LITTLE CLUSTER.
IT WAS LIKE VERY COMPACT, YOU KNOW.
AND WE'VE JUST WATCHED IT GROW OVER THE LAST WEEKS.
SUPER FUN.
DOESN'T MATTER WHAT KIND.
YOU KNOW, COULD BE A POLYPOUR OR A SLIME MOLD OR AN ACTUAL --A MUSHROOM WITH LIKE A CAP, YOU KNOW, CLASSIC MUSHROOM.
WE ARE LOOKING AT ALL OF IT.
I LOVE PHOTOGRAPHY.
SO IT'S LIKE A MULTIFACETED HOBBY FOR US.
WE GET EXERCISE.
IT'S EDUCATIONAL.
YOU KNOW, WE'RE LEARNING NEW THINGS.
WE'RE BEING CREATIVE WITH THE PHOTOGRAPHY.

>> WELL, I LOVE HOW MUSHROOMS HAVE THIS SORT OF DUAL, YOU KNOW, THEY CAN BE SO CUTE AND MAGICAL.
YOU KNOW, THE STUFF OF FAIRY TALES LITERALLY.
YOU KNOW, CUTESY AROUND A LITTLE GNOME OR WHATEVER.
BUT THEY'RE ALSO REALLY DARK.
THEY'RE LIKE ASSOCIATED WITH DEATH AND DECAY.
AND I THINK I JUST REALLY LOVE THAT DICHOTOMY OF LIKE THAT'S WHERE THE MAGIC IS.
BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT LIFE IS.
YOU KNOW, PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO THINK ABOUT THE DARK STUFF TOO MUCH.
THEY ARE CONNECTED.
AND MUSHROOMS JUST DO A REALLY GOOD JOB OF --THEY BRING ME SO MUCH JOY BUT LIKE IN THAT I REALIZE THAT THEY'RE LITERALLY COMING OUT OF SOMETHING DECAYING, YOU KNOW.
AND IT'S CRAZY BECAUSE YOU KNOW, THEY'RE BREAKING IT DOWN SO THAT IT CAN TURN INTO SOIL AND THEN THERE CAN BE FLOWERS OR WHATEVER.
YOU KNOW, IT'S A REALLY COOL REMINDER OF LIKE CYCLES AND HOW EVERYTHING'S CONNECTED AND, YOU KNOW, IT'S LIKE YOU ONLY HAVE ONE LIFE.
YOU ONLY HAVE ONE BODY.
IT'S JUST SKIN.
JUST HAVE FUN WHERE YOU CAN.
YOU KNOW?
IT'S ALREADY THRILLING TO GET A TATTOO.
BUT THEN TO NOT KNOW, TO GO INTO IT BLINDLY IS JUST REALLY EXCITING.
ESSENTIALLY WHAT IT IS IS IT'S AN ORACLE DECK AND EACH CARD HAS A DESIGN AND I SIT DOWN WITH THE CLIENT AND YOU KNOW, I EXPLAIN SOME STUFF TO THEM AND WE DO A LITTLE READING.
AND THEY DRAW THREE CARDS.
AND THEN THEY GET ONE OR TWO OR ALL THREE OF THOSE DESIGN TATTOOS.

I WOULD LOVE FOR MY TATTOOS TO MAKE PEOPLE FEEL BEAUTIFUL IN THEIR BODY AND POWERFUL AND HAPPY.
YOU KNOW, I FEEL LIKE THAT'S THE GOAL REALLY.
BECAUSE THEY REALLY ARE FUN.
I DON'T THINK I KNOW HOW TO LIKE NOT STAY BUSY OR KEEP CREATING THINGS.
LIKE I HAVE TO CREATE.
I JUST HAVE TO BE MAKING SOMETHING.

YOU KNOW, IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT ANYBODY ELSE THINKS ABOUT YOUR WORK.
IT DOESN'T MATTER.
YOU JUST HAVE TO KEEP THE CHANNEL OPEN AND KEEP THE ENERGY FLOWING AND KEEP IT MOVING AND JUST KEEP CREATING BECAUSE THERE'S NOBODY ELSE OUT THERE THAT WILL OR CAN MAKE WHAT YOU CAN MAKE.
YOU KNOW, AND YOU HAVE TO LIKE HONOR THAT.
THAT LIKE IF YOU DON'T GET IT OUT IT WILL NEVER EXIST.

GARY, INDIANA HAS LONG BEEN ONE OF THE MOST IMPOVERISHED CITIES IN THE UNITED STATES.
MANY OF UNITED STATES PUBLIC AND PRIVATE BUILDINGS SIT EMPTY AND IN DECAY.
MILWAUKEE PHOTOGRAPHER KIM CUNNINGHAM HAS TRAVELED TO GARY SEVERAL TIMES TO EXPLORE AND PHOTOGRAPH THESE BUILDINGS.
SHE IS FASCINATED BY WHAT THEY ONCE WERE AND WHAT THEY HAVE BECOME.
>> MY FOCUS ON MY PHOTOGRAPHY IS FINDING BEAUTY IN PLACES WHERE YOU WOULDN'T EXPECT TO SEE THEM.
MY FAVORITE TYPE OF ROOM TO EXPLORE IN ABANDONED BUILDINGS WOULD BE THE BOILER-ROOM.
I'M FASCINATED BY THESE BIG MACHINES OR THESE BIG LIKE PIECES OF EQUIPMENT.
WE ALL REGISTER THINGS DIFFERENTLY THROUGH OUR EYES, AND TO ME I WANT PEOPLE TO BE ABLE TO LOOK AT LIFE, SEE BEAUTY IN IT.
LIKE AN OLD STAIRCASE WITH PEELING PAINT AND, YOU KNOW, DUST FLYING AROUND.
IT LOOKS LIKE BEAUTY TO ME WHEN I SEE THAT KIND OF SCENE, AND TO ME THAT ALWAYS HAS A SENSE OF LIKE A WONDER, MYSTERY.
I HOPE THAT PEOPLE CAN SEE WHAT I SEE.
THERE'S HOPE.
AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRCASE YOU SEE THE BOTTOM IS DARK, SOMETHING TO BE HOPEFUL UPSTAIRS, SOMETHING INTERESTING UP THERE.

OPEN DOORS, OPEN WINDOWS, LIGHTS IN THE DISTANCE, THOSE KINDS OF THINGS DRAW ME.

HE'S ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF OLD HERE.
HE'S NOW GROWN, MARRIED WITH TWO BEAUTIFUL KIDS.
INTERESTING LOOKING BACK ON THESE PHOTOS.
SO I STARTED IN ART AT AN EARLY AGE AND I ALWAYS WANTED A CAMERA.
WHEN I WAS 13 MY PARENTS BOUGHT ME MY FIRST CAMERA.

I'D JUST TAKE IT EVERYWHERE AND TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS.
THIS IS A PHOTOGRAPH I TOOK IN 1995 OF MY FATHER DOWNTOWN.
WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL I LOVED TAKING NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY.
MY PARENTS WOULD TAKE ME OUT AT NIGHT AND DRIVE AROUND SO I COULD TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS.
I WAS TAKING A PICTURE ACTUALLY OF THE USINGER'S BUILDING.
AND MY DAD WAS LEANING AGAINST THE BUILDING WAITING FOR ME TO TAKE MY PHOTOS OF THE WATER AND EVERYTHING.
AND I THOUGHT THAT'S A GREET PHOTO OF DAD.
HE'S LEANING THERE, A GREAT PAUSE, I TOOK A PICTURE OF MY FATHER AND IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE PHOTOGRAPHS THAT I'VE EVER TAKEN.
I WAS A SHY KID.
I DIDN'T TALK MUCH BECAUSE I HAD A STUTTER.
AND SOMETIMES, YOU KNOW, BEING ABLE TO PHOTOGRAPH THINGS THAT WOULD KIND OF HELP ME KIND OF EXPLAIN HOW I WAS FEELING OR HOW MY THOUGHTS ARE.
ONE OF MY UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES IS IN PHOTOGRAPHY.
DURING THAT TIME IN COLLEGE I STARTED THINKING ABOUT HOW MY PHOTOGRAPHY IS BEING VIEWED AND WHAT I WAS ACTUALLY TRYING TO SAY, COMMUNICATE TO PEOPLE.
SO IT MADE ME THINK ABOUT NOT JUST I'M PHOTOGRAPHING THIS, THIS, THIS, MAYBE I SHOULD THINK ABOUT WHAT I'M DOING AND WHY, MAYBE I CAN LOOK INWARD TO MYSELF.
>> I CAME BACK TO GARY, INDIANA.
INITIALLY IT WAS BECAUSE IT WAS EASY ACCESS.
THE CITY HAS A SMALLER TAX BASE THAN MOST CITIES, AND MILWAUKEE WHEN A BUILDING IS BROKEN DOWN IT'S BOARDED UP AND POLICE PATROL AROUND TO MAKE SURE NO ONE GOES IN TO DAMAGE IT.
IN GARY WHEN A BUILDING CLOSES DOWN OR THE OWNERS MOVE AWAY AND DON'T TAKE CARE OF IT, IT DOESN'T GET BOARDED UP.
IT JUST STARTS TO DECAY ON ITS OWN.
IT'S LIKE DYING ON THE VINE ALMOST.
AND I STARTED GETTING REALLY INTERESTED IN THOSE BUILDINGS BECAUSE I KIND OF THOUGHT, WELL, THE BEAUTY IS STILL THERE, IT'S JUST HIDDEN UNDERNEATH THE DECAY, HIDDEN UNDERNEATH THE SPRAY PAINT, HIDDEN BEHIND THE BROKEN WINDOWS OR BROKEN GLASS.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE BUILDINGS IN GARY WAS CALLED MORTAR AUDITORIUM.
IT WAS A BUILDING WHERE THEY WOULD HAVE CONCERTS AND PLAYS.
YOU KNOW, FRANK SINATRA PERFORMED THERE.
I THINK THEY MENTIONED MLK MAY HAVE SPOKEN THERE AS WELL.
WHEN I WAS IN GARY IN 2020, ONE OF MY FIRST TRIPS I SAW THAT THE BUILDING WAS BEING TORN DOWN.
THEY WERE IN THE PROCESS OF TEARING IT DOWN.
ONE WALL WAS ALREADY DOWN.
I FIGURED LET ME GO INSIDE AND TAKE A LOOK.
AND I WALK INSIDE AND THERE'S THIS PINK PIANO JUST SITTING IN THE LOBBY AREA.
I ENTERED THAT PHOTOGRAPH IN A CONTEST THAT BARNETT GALLERY WAS HAVING FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS AND IT WAS ACCEPTED INTO THE FINALIST STAGE AND THERE WAS A CONTEST WHERE PEOPLE COME IN AND VOTE FOR THEIR FAVORITE PHOTOGRAPH.
SO I ACTUALLY WON SECOND PLACE WHICH I WAS VERY HAPPY ABOUT.
IN A WORLD WHERE EVERYTHING IS SO SUPERFICIAL AND EVERYTHING IS VERY TIKTOK OR SOCIAL MEDIA FOCUSED THIS MAY SEEM CORNY BUT GO OUTSIDE, LOOK AROUND, THERE'S THINGS YOU DON'T NOTICE THAT ARE RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU.

AND THEN THIS PLACE, THE ARTIST RESIDENCY, FEELS LIKE THAT TO ME.
IF I CAN'T GO HOME, I COME HERE TO WORK.
I THINK BEING A MILITARY BRAT IS WHAT INFLUENCES THE DIASPORA ASPECT OF MY WORK.
SO I'VE BEEN ABLE TO TRAVEL AND VISIT LOTS OF DIFFERENT CITIES, DIFFERENT PLACES, MEET A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE.
BUT I'M FROM PUERTO RICO.
SO IT'S THIS DYNAMIC THAT I HAVE WHERE I LIVE IN THE IN BETWEEN AT ALL TIMES.
>> I HAVE TO DO LIKE A BASE COAT.
I CAN'T LEAVE IT WHITE.
NOT MY JAM.
THAT WAY TOO IT'S LIKE THE LIGHT --ONCE I DO THE OUTLINES, USUALLY I DO EVERYTHING THAT'S SUPER MATTE ON HERE BUT IF FOR ANY REASON IT'S TRANSPARENT OR LIKE SOMETHING PEEKS THROUGH A CRACK, LIKE YOU'LL SEE YELLOW, YOU'LL SEE ANOTHER BRIGHT COLOR.
YOU KNOW?
I DON'T EVER WANT IT TO JUST BE WHITE.
LIKE IF I DO WHITE IT HAS TO BE INTENTIONALLY I PUT WHITE ON THE CANVAS, NOT FROM THE PRIMER.
>> WHEN I TRY TO TELL MY STORIES, I HAVE A REALLY BRIGHT COLOR PALETTE.
AND MY COLOR PALETTE IS REFLECTIVE OF THE HOMES THAT YOU WILL SEE ON THE ISLAND AND THEY'RE ACTUALLY LIKE COLOR MATCHES TO LIKE HOMES THAT ARE THERE.
SO THAT'S WHY WITH THAT COLOR PALETTE IT'S A VERY LIKE LATINO COLOR PALETTE.
IT'S VERY MUCH OF THE CULTURE.
BUT THEN PEOPLE INTERPRET IT AS LIKE HAPPY.
THEY THINK MY COLORS ARE HAPPY.
A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO WALK UP TO MY WORK AND THEY'RE LIKE OH, I LOVE YOUR WORK, IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL, SO BRIGHT IT JUST MAKES ME FEEL HAPPY.
AND HERE I AM TALKING ABOUT HURRICANE MARIA AND HAW DISTRAUGHT I AM I COULDN'T BE THERE TO HELP OUT MY FAMILY.
AND I'M CRYING UNDERNEATH A FLAMBOYAN TREE.
AND THEY'RE LIKE IT LOOKS GREAT, IT LOOKS HAPPY.
THAT'S PROBABLY THE HARDEST THING TO OVERCOME, THE FACT THAT MY COLOR PALETTE GIVES ONE SENSE OF JOY TO PEOPLE BUT THEN WHAT I'M ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT ISN'T JUST SOMETHING THAT'S PRETTY ON A CANVAS, IT'S LIKE THE METAPHORS ARE ABOUT REALLY DEEP STORIES, YOU KNOW, THINGS THAT I'VE BEEN THROUGH, THINGS THAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE BEEN THROUGH THAT COME FROM PR.
THAT'S PROBABLY BEEN THE HARDEST THING TO OVERCOME, IS KIND OF EXPLAIN THAT PART OF IT.
AND THEN AS AN ARTIST YOU DON'T WANT TO OVEREXPLAIN ANYTHING OR FEEL LIKE YOU'RE DEFENDING YOURSELF.
SO IT'S LIKE HEY, TAKE THIS FOR WHAT IT IS.
AND I LOVE THAT YOU THINK THAT IT'S BEAUTIFUL AND IT'S BRIGHT AND THAT IT LOOKS JOYOUS.
BUT LIKE TAKE A SECOND TO REALLY LOOK AT IT.
TAKE A SECOND TO REALLY READ IT.
LOOK AT THE TITLE.
TRY AND PUT TOGETHER, YOU KNOW, THE PIECES.
THAT'S ALL I CAN HOPE SOMEONE SEES IN IT.
THAT'S ALSO WHY I THINK IT'S SO IMPORTANT FOR ME TO TELL THE STORIES WHEN SOMEONE ELSE CONNECTS TO IT, THEY GET IT.
LIKE WOW, I REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED DURING HURRICANE MARIA.
LIKE I WAS THERE TOO.
OR I KNOW WHAT IT IS TO GO BACK AND FORTH WITH A SUITCASE SINCE I WAS 3 YEARS OLD.
LIKE I COMPLETELY GET THAT.
YOU KNOW, MY WORK IS FOR THE PEOPLE.
SO WHATEVER SOMEBODY INTERPRETS IS WHAT THEY INTERPRET, RIGHT?
SO I'M NOT MAD AT ALL IF LIKE WHAT THEY INTERPRET ISN'T WHAT I WAS TRYING TO SAY.
IF THEIR INTERPRETATION IS SOMETHING THAT CONNECTS WITH THEM, LIKE THEIR SOUL OR THEIR STORY, I LOVE TO HEAR THAT BECAUSE I HAVE HEARD THINGS ALL OVER THE PLACE ABOUT MY PIECES AND I GO WOW, I WOULD HAVE NEVER THOUGHT IN A MILLION YEARS THAT'S WHAT YOU GOT FROM THIS.

A LOT OF IT IS LIKE LOOKING AT YOUR PHONE AND SCROLLING AND LIKE A LOT OF MY DAYTIME STUFF IS NETWORKING AND LIKE DOING MEETINGS AND TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE AND ALL OF THESE THINGS.
AND WHEN I COME OUT HERE IT'S JUST ME.
LIKE IT'S ME, IT'S BY MYSELF.
IT'S ME AND ANIMALS, WHICH I LOVE ANIMALS.
I THINK I LIKE ANIMALS BETTER THAN I LIKE PEOPLE.
SO I GUESS THAT'S ANOTHER WAY THAT IT INFLUENCES ME BEING OUT HERE.
LIKE THE ANIMALS END UP IN MY ART.
I FIND MY COMMUNITY, ESPECIALLY SINCE I'VE BEEN A PROFESSIONAL ARTIST FOR THE PAST FIVE OR SIX YEARS, THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA, THROUGH INSTAGRAM SPECIFICALLY.
AND THAT IS HOW I TALK TO PEOPLE.
THAT'S HOW I TALK TO MY COMMUNITY.
I ALSO LOVE GOING TO DIFFERENT TYPES OF NETWORKING EVENTS.
I WORK WITH MULTIPLE NON-PROFITS AND TALK TO OTHER ARTISTS, OTHER PEOPLE THAT ARE IN THE COMMUNITY, COMMUNITY LEADERS.
AND IT'S VERY MUCH A PART OF MY WORK NOW THAT I'VE BEEN INVOLVED IN SEVERAL NON-PROFITS, I'VE BEEN ABLE TO DO COMMUNITY TYPE OF PROJECTS AND IT STARTED.
MY PAINTING CLASSES AND IT STARTED MY COMMUNITY MURALS.
IT'S SOMETHING NOW I DIDN'T EVEN THINK I'D BE GETTING INTO WHEN I FIRST STARTED AS A PROFESSIONAL ARTIST.
AND IT'S DEVELOPED OVER TIME, AND IT'S ACTUALLY LIKE MY NUMBER ONE FAVORITE THING TO DO WITH ART IS TO LIKE HAVE PEOPLE INVOLVED WITH MY PIECES.
I'M ALL ABOUT SHARING INFORMATION AND RESOURCES.
LIKE ONE, YEAH, IT FEELS GOOD TO DO IT FOR THE COMMUNITY.
BUT TWO, LIKE WHEN I SEE SOMEONE ELSE, THEY HAVE THIS POTENTIAL AND THEY'RE JUST KIND OF LIKE LOST IN THE SAUCE AND THEY DON'T KNOW EXACTLY WHERE TO GO WITH IT AND I'M LIKE I WAS YOU, I WAS YOU A COUPLE YEARS AGO, LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THIS, THIS AND THIS, YOU NEED TO SIGN UP HERE, YOU NEED TO FILL OUT THESE FORMS, YOU NEED TO MEET THESE PEOPLE AT THESE PLACES, IT'S JUST --IT'S COOL TO REALLY WATCH SOMEONE GROW.
I THINK IT'S REALLY GOOD TO SURROUND YOURSELF WITH A COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE WHETHER IT'S FRIENDS, WHETHER IT'S FAMILIES, WHETHER IT'S CO-WORKERS OR NETWORK OF A COMMUNITY OR SOMETHING, TO HAVE PEOPLE AROUND YOU WHO LIKE RECOGNIZE WHAT YOUR TALENTS ARE AND JUST KEEP TELLING YOU THAT SAME MESSAGE OVER AND OVER AGAIN BECAUSE IT'S A MIND THING AT THE END OF THE DAY.
WE ARE OUR OWN WORST ENEMY.
SO FOR ANYBODY THAT FEELS LOST IN THE SAUCE OR HAS IMPOSTOR SYNDROME, WE ALL DO.
NONE OF US KNOW WHAT WE'RE DOING EVER.
YOU JUST HAVE TO LIKE TAKE THE RISK, GO WITH IT, SEE WHAT WORKS OUT AND BE OKAY WITH SOME THINGS JUST NOT WORKING OUT THE WAY YOU WANTED TO.
WHAT'S MEANT FOR YOU --I TRULY BELIEVE WHAT'S MEANT FOR YOU IS MEANT FOR YOU.
