Some were punk bands.
Some were rock and roll bands.
Some were, you know, DJ groups or whatever.
And over time some of those bands had broken up and I was, you know, good friends with all of them.
So I kind of had members from each one kind of come and join me.

And all of my friends really liked that music as well, so it's kind of something that we did when we weren't at punk shows or at rock and roll shows.
We were listening to soul records.

[audience cheering] Brock: I feel like I'm influenced by so many different things.
I mean, hip hop was like a huge influence when I was a kid, and a lot of hip hop uses samples and samples--all these samples were being sampled by old soul artists and old doo-wop groups and things like that.
So once I started looking into those, I would find out all these old bands.
My mom was really into the Isley Brothers and Delegation and all these really old, awesome, like, R&B and soul bands.
So that was another thing that led me down the path.
And just ever since then, I mean, there's more and more funk and soul music kind of reemerging in the scene and becoming more popular and modern, and there's so many bands now that are out there, you know, like all of the Sacred Souls and The Altons, The Sinceres, Durand Jones.
There's all these modern soul bands coming up too, and those guys are a huge inspiration to us as well, so.
