I'm George Graham.
This time we have an outstanding quartet, who in addition to doing their own music, also serve as the touring band for such notable artists as Al Stewart, Kenny Loggins, and Dave Mason.
Led by a husband-wife duo, here are The Empty Pockets.

- And sometimes people will ask the dreaded question, why?
Why are you doing this to yourself?
As in an arts career.
- Yeah, sure, sure.

I was 12-years-old, Nate was 15-years-old, and we had a mutual friend, my cousin Mike.
And he had this basement.
And I think maybe it's changed in my memory, but I remember it like this.
It's smoky and foggy, and in walks this guy, the coolest guy I'd ever seen in my life with a full length black like duster jacket, a base around his neck, a trumpet in one hand, a bunch of harmonicas in the other hand.
And he was basically like, "What's up, everybody?
Who's ready to play till four in the morning?"
And I was like, who is this guy?
I mean, we'd play any song we sort of knew for half an hour, and it wasn't for years later that we did a gig together.
Nate and I did a gig, and I'd never met these two wonderful folk, Adam or Erica.
We did a gig at a piano bar in Chicago.
And I said, "I wrote all these songs.
Can you learn 'em?"
And Nate was like, "All right."
And we played this gig together, and I thought it went pretty well.
And at the end Nate said, "If you ever wanna do anything with this, I wanna do that with you."
And I was kind of blown away because Nate was in like four bands.
- I was working a bunch of different groups trying to get something started, and you came along and blew me away with those songs.
And I was like, ooh, this guy gets it.
Let's do some stuff.
He's got like the fire in his belly, I can tell.
And like there's places to go, and let's do this.
Let's go these places together.
And I thought that was really cool that he wanted to do it.
- We were both super committed to music.
It was like we're doing this.
And we ended up auditioning together for a musical called The Buddy Holly Story.
We started a band.
We called it Josh and The Empty Pockets.
That's where we met my wife of 10 years, who was my future wife at the time.
We started a band together and took out my name 'cause Erica started singing, and we did like two gigs like that.
But if you can imagine a band called Josh and the Empty Pockets with Erica singing, it doesn't make any sense.
So I pitched And The Empty Pockets and no one liked that.
So we toured for a long time together.
And then five years ago we needed a new drummer, and our sound man, my cousin Daniel, the Jux himself said, "I got this guy, and you gotta check him out."
And we brought Adam in to jam.
And I remember the moment that it was like, oh, this is gonna be the guy.
I said, "What do you think about doing something in an interesting time signature?"
And you were like, "That's my thing!"
And I was like, "Well, I have this song in five four."
and I just started playing it.
It's not easy, and you just like play it along in five four.
And we were just playing at five four, and Nate and I looked at each other like, "This'll work, this'll work, this'll work."

He's one of the strangest, most interesting guys.
He's an amazing lyricist.
He's been through it all.
He's taught us a lot about music.
Of all the insane things that have happened to us with Al Stewart, the best thing is he's taken us to the UK twice, and we essentially got to live in the UK for five weeks and play concerts.
And that's why we got to go to Abbey Road because we were already in London.
And we were like, "You know what?"
- Let's do that.
- Yeah, and and I don't know if they would've let us in otherwise.
You kind of have to email and be like, they vet you.
And Al Stewart recorded four albums there, so it was kinda like, "Hey, we're Al Stewart's band."
And they were like, "Great, come on in."
Yeah, but we've collaborated with all sorts of people.
It started with Richie Furay of the Buffalo Springfield, but also we have a longstanding collaboration with Simon Kirk who's the drummer of Bad Company.
We made an album with him.
I was just texting with him.
He said, "Let's do some shows."
- He wished me a happy birthday last week.
Hi.
Si!
- It's very different.
Obviously Simon Kirk is like Bad Company hits and his own originals versus Al Stewart.
We've also worked with Gary Wright, who's the Dream Weaver.
And then we've had the pleasure of like getting some one-off backup situations.
We did a gig where we backed up Kenny Loggins, and then we backed up the original walk, what's the band called?
The Buggles!
Yeah, so the first ever song on MTV ever!
- [Erica] Geoff Downes.
- Video Killed the Radio Star.
Geoff Downes and Al Stewart are friends.
Geoff Downes is at a show.
It's on the internet.
Did we do it perfect?
Yes we did.
- Yes.
- We literally played Video Killed the Radio Star with Geoff Downes.

- [Erica] It felt really fast.
- [Josh] I think we were nervous.
- [Band Member] Yeah.
- [Josh] But we love collaborating, man.
- Yeah, and it's opened up so many awesome doors for us.
I mean, not only have we been able to benefit from those people's audiences, but we've also like learned a lot about songwriting, and music making, and performing from working with those artists.
And it's definitely made us a better band.
- Very excited to share all this music with you and to share some new music with you.
We record it at an incredibly special studio.
- Maybe you've heard of it.

- We'll do, my wife's looking at me like, don't do that song right now.
So we'll do something different.
(Erica laughs) We recorded at a very special studio in London.
It was originally named after the record label that was there.
So it was called the EMI Studios, but they eventually renamed after, renamed it after an album based on the road it's on.
And the album is called Abbey Road.
It's the Beatles's second to last album.
