The Far Field is a novel about a young Indian woman who travels from her home in the south of India to the region of Kashmir in the north of India in order to find a rather mysterious figure from her past.
This trip, which she makes out of very personal reasons, becomes far more than she bargained for.
- So, Shalini is looking for Bashir Ahmed and I want to know why is it so important for her to find this figure from her past.
- Shalini is looking for any clues she can find to the life of her mother, which always was mysterious to her even up till the end of her mother's life.
What she knows for a fact is that her mother was happiest when she was around this man who used to visit their home in Bangalore when Shalini was a child.
Why this man sparked this life in her mother is not really something she understands, but she has convinced herself that if she does find him, she will in turn understand something more about her mother.
She invests him with a significance more than justified.
(upbeat music continues) - Why did you decide to have a mother who is so complex that her daughter has to go all the way to Kashmir to find out what she's all about?
- [Madhuri Vijay] She was, you know, an intelligent woman whose life wasn't quite as wide as her intelligence should have allowed her to have.
And somehow at some point in the drafts, her unpredictability started to turn up a little bit and the more it did, the more fun I had writing her, so I cracked it up a little more.
- Thank you so much, Madhuri, for being here with us to talk about The Far Field and thank you for watching A Word on Words.

- [Madhuri Vijay] That's partly where that first line of the book came from.
It was thinking about distance between experience and innocence, and so that's why I wanted to start off with that line.
I am 30 years old and that is nothing.
