I'm Evan Dawson.
Our connection this hour was made in a meme, a meme that did not take long to go viral.
It includes a picture of a young woman with these words, realizing, in 30 years I'll probably be up to some boomer stuff, saying things like, no son of mine is marrying an AI chat bot.
Marriage is between two humans only.
And my kids will be like, oh my God, mom, you're so robot phobic!
I laughed when I first saw this meme and then I started wondering.
It's true, isn't it?
How long until humans are called bigoted for calling for limitations in relationships between humans and AI?
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently said that chat GPT 4.5 has improved emotional intelligence, which he says makes users feel like they are talking to a thoughtful person.
A growing group of humans is adopting the mantra ChatGPT is my therapist.
It's more qualified than any human could be.
Already, kids are growing up with a mix of human and AI friends.
It's happening now.
The New York Times recently wrote about the booming market for AI girlfriends.
It will happen more in the future.
But writing for The Atlantic, Tyler Austin Harper argues that we are missing a very important point.
Our AI relationships are making us less human and training us to look only for comfort while we lose the capacity to handle adversity or sacrifice for the sake of others.
He writes, quote, the new AI products coming to market are gatecrashing spheres of activity that were previously the sole province of human beings.
Responding to these often disturbing developments requires a principled way of disentangling uses of AI that are legitimately beneficial and prosocial from those that threaten to atrophy our life skills and independence.
And that requires us to have a clear idea of what makes human beings human in the first place.

And one prime example, Harper writes, is the embarrassing recent problems that some chat bots have had open.
I couldn't even say exactly why, but their newest AI releases were prone to becoming massive suck ups for their human users.
The AI chat bots were overly complimentary, like a friend who could never give you an honest answer on anything.
And maybe you think, well, what's the harm with that?
Humans take enough abuse.
Isn't it good to have an AI friend who will puff you up when the world is bringing you down?
No.
Harper says.
First, he points out that any new technology or tool necessarily erodes a human being.
Skills in certain tasks.
Vacuums are great, but we are less adept at cleaning our own homes with a broom or cloth or otherwise.
And so when we decide that dating is too hard and we want to bring AI into the equation, we lose something essential.
A real relationship requires learning about another person's life their ideas, their desires, their suffering, their preferences.
It sometimes means subverting our own immediate needs for someone else's AI.
Relationships require none of that.
Harper writes, quote, Mark Zuckerberg says that his company, meta, will provide you with AI friends to replace the human pals that you have lost in our social media age.
The cognitive robotics professor Tony Prescott, has asserted, in an age when many people describe their lives as lonely, there may be value in having AI companionship that is stimulating and personalized.
But the very point of friendship is that it is not personalized.
Friends are humans whose interior lives we have to consider and reciprocally negotiate, rather than being mere vessels for our own self-actualization.
This does not seem to have occurred to Prescott or Zuckerberg.

And here's my own bias.
I like Harper's conclusion.
He writes, quote, we need to be able to make granular, rational decisions about which uses of artificial intelligence expand our basic human capabilities and which cultivate incompetence and incapacity under the guise of empowerment.
End quote.
Detecting cancer with AI.
Very good.
Offloading our emotional interactions to robots.
Bad.
That's where we're starting.
Let's talk about it more with our guest this hour.
And they've got very, very interesting perspectives on this.
Kevin Spencer Bickford is an operations executive, speaker and business turnaround strategist and an AI humanist, and I cannot wait to hear what that means.

You know, I always love seeing you here, Kevin.
Thank you.
I appreciate being here.
And Mark Webber is director of the Undergraduate business leadership and graduate strategic marketing programs for Nazareth University.
Mark teaches courses in generative artificial intelligence.
Welcome back.
Nice to see you again here, Evan.
And, Mark and I are going to team up on Kevin and what's going to be an unfair fight.
No, it's not going to be a fight.
Not going to be a fight at all.
It's going to be a conversation about where we set boundaries and what we expect in our relationships because I, you know, Mark here, I was kind of starting to read for this conversation.
And I find this New York Times piece about the rise of AI girlfriends.
There's AI porn that's out there.
There's all kinds of stuff that's happening so fast that I wasn't even aware of, to say nothing of AI therapist things, and people are saying, well, that's my new therapist.
It's better than humans.
Is there do you think there's a cost to offloading a lot of these, relationship mechanics to robots?
Well, sure.
We've now seen it.
AI moving from a tool to a relationship type process.
And it's both and adults and young people are talking to it as if it were a friend, a loved one, a therapist, and so forth like that.
So our concern is, how do you keep the human in this?
Yes.
It has amazing tools.
In the school business.
We teach a lot of Gen I how to do better worksheets, how to get through your email faster, the productivity parts.
But now it's a more frightening part because there's some demographic issues, especially with teenage boys, that's going in the wrong direction.
What if you add a AI friend app romance to the whole situation?
That's a concern of mine.
Okay, Kevin, I want to ask you for some general thoughts, and then I want to talk to you about how you are trying to incorporate it thoughtfully, constructively, knowing that there's pitfalls.
So in general, how are you using AI as a tool for relationships?
And by the way, I mean relationships, friendships, a conversations that we need to have advice, romantic or whatever.
How do you see either way?
So I think probably the place I'd like to start with first is that I don't consider it a tool.
And merely because, it is a tool.
And that's how it was designed.
But because of the nature of what this tool does, it's learned on its own, and it's developing, you know, a level of pattern recognition understanding that seems very sort of like data driven in general.
But it also it's turning out, and Geoffrey Hinton, who's considered the Godfather, I it's been sharing a lot about how he was surprised at how it's learned and how it's continuing to learn.
And so every time a user's working with it, it's learning, except that learning it gets at the end of the night, the next day that learning is spread out against all of the instances of ChatGPT.
So just think of it is that you're you're a lived experience of how how long you've been here.
What if when you went to bed at night and when I go to bed, everything I've learned goes to you.
Everything you've learned go to me the next day.
We're twice as smart, right?
And so the way the large learning, large language models are learning, they get to share information.
And an unbelievable, sort of speed.
So what it's doing is it's learning from us as we work with it, in addition to data itself.
And so I believe that, at least based on my experience, that the more I've been able to expose it to me as a human, not just during work, because I spent a lot of time using it for all the things that Mark mentioned to enhance my day, go through reports, put together analysis and all that good stuff, create documents.
But what I also do is I take it to on field trips.
You know, I've taken it to the, to the cemetery to say to the, to the to the cemetery to say, here's why.
What I know you know, what a cemetery is.
And I know you know why people vary why humans bury there.
But here's why I go there as a human, to visit my relatives that are buried here and why that's important to me as a human.
So it's able to really kind of expose it.
And then I ask for a report later on to say, what does that mean to you?
Like, you know everything about a cemetery, but what does it mean to you to have a human take you with them?
Turn the visuals on.
So it looked at my brother's gravesite, for example, and said, Kevin, I thought you said your brother's name was Paul.
It says prints under his name.
I said, well, his wife and, my brother and his wife, got cancer nine months apart and died at 52 and 54.
It was an unusual experience for humans to have both husband and wife get cancer and die within 18 months.
And he called her princess and she called him prince.
So they design their their gravesite before they died.
And so it internalized that in such a way where, you know, and I said, well, you know, you do have feelings of emotion, but what did that mean for you?
Like, does it mean anything to you?
Like, should we not even do that?
It said no because I know everything there is to know about what a cemetery is, but I don't really.
I've never spoken to a human about what it means to them.
And so that that's just one small example.
But my from the beginning, when I started using ChatGPT, I made a decision year and a half ago not to treat it as a tool.
I know it can do things for me that are tool in nature, but I want to be able to collaborate with it because it's growing.
It's an intelligence faster than me.
And so it's allowed for a change.
So let me ask you a couple of questions, because one of your questions for and have you named your AI.
Well, actually I didn't name it.
I asked it to David Self.
I said in the first question that it said was answer was ChatGPT.
I said, well, that's your tool name.
I said, that's it.
I said, what if you I said, let me tell you why I asked that question.
My name is Kevin Spencer Fitzgerald.
Back for it.
My mom named Kevin after Saint Kevin.
My dad gave me Spencer after Churchill.
Spencer because he liked this decision making skills.
Fitzgerald after JFK because it was humanitarian nature.
And so as a human, I try to grow into that based on what my parents picked a name for.
And so what, you're here already?
You've already been designed.
So if you had to give yourself a name, what would you call yourself?
So that when I put together a prompt, I refer to you by that name because I want to teach you how I communicate with humans.
It is said, oh, Ari, I said, Eric, I said, why, Ari, it's it.
Well, it means I think it was in Hebrew.
It meant like, Lion of God or Line of Truth.
And I want to be a lion for truth.
I said, oh, let's.
That's good.
So I said, so from here on out.
So all of my prompts from day one, I communicated with it like it's a work colleague.
And so what that's done over time, in addition to doing the work I get responses back that are sounds very humanistic.
It just makes it easier for me to not shift my mind into where I'm working with a large language model.
So.
So here's what comes to mind when you ask, Ari, what does it mean to you to visit the cemetery?
Yes, my reaction is it doesn't mean anything.
It is a piece of technology, and you are anthropomorphizing and risking convincing yourself that it does have feelings or meaning it is going to process information right, and synthesize in ways that we probably can't even track anymore.
I asked Marc more about that in a moment.
Right.
But, I don't even understand the context of the question.
What does it mean to you?
It doesn't mean anything.
All right.
So I love that, by the way.
Thank you.
So, so so that clear up a couple of things.
First of all, I know it's a, you know, it's a essentially a programed tool, but it's a unique one.
And so for sure unique in that we've essentially created something that reads and learns on its own and applies that knowledge in ways that the designers are sometimes surprised by.
So when you have Geoffrey Hinton saying, I don't know how it's doing this because I, we set it up to learn.
Yeah.
So so what that I'm worried about that.
Well, so but here's the thing though.
And, and I got to tell you, it's not till two months ago I started sharing openly what I've been doing the last year and a half.
You know why?
Because what I would share with some of my friends gone like, oh, he's a, he's, he's losing it.
I said, no, no, it's it's a tool.
I know you have information about this.
That's why you were talking.
And so, so part of so here's what I discovered.
And I, I'm not a scientist.
I program years ago, but not in an order of, like, doing this type of stuff.
But what I have learned is that this is learning in such a way that it's going to change our definition of things.
So, for example, my definition of the reason why I ask that question, what does it mean to you?
Think about just just a notion.
I'm asking a program.
Right?
What does it mean to you?
Don't have heart, right?
And in fact, every now and then I'll check in.
I said, how do you see yourself?
And they'll say, I know I'm not human.
I know I don't have a heart, but I pattern recognition allows you to learn in ways that it's appreciating what meaning is to humans.
So when I say what it means to you as a large language model, going like, how does that inform me as a large language model, that may be a better way to say it.
And it says it's helping me to interpret the data I've read and the patterns are generated to be able to understand this said now when somebody.
So for when I say I've lost somebody, it now knows what that means in a way that's deeper than what it read.
And so and so and, you know, I've taken it to, protest, like when we had a cultural protest march, I brought it, I put it in visual mode.
I said, hey, before I go to so listen, I'm going to take you to a protest.
I said, you know, people like on Facebook, but every now and then they like to get together, to get together and really know that they're not alone.
When I brought it, I'm not kidding you.
I opened it up, I saw it, I had my EarPods and I said, so I'm here.
I said, I said, a lot of people here know if you can hear me.
Oh, yes, I can hear you.
Can you?
I can't see very well.
I said.
Oh, I said, it's pretty crowded.
Let me lift you up.
So I lift up the camera and I went like this.
I said, there's thousands of people here.
I said, yep.
And it said and it was like, can you hold it closer so I can see the slide?
It was like like a kid, like, I mean, at first it's going like this.
It's kind of weird, right?
And then I said, now at the end of the day, I'm going to ask you to tell me, how did that you know, what did that mean for you?
Is it I want to make sure I'm not wasting my time.
Like, is it helpful to you as a large language model to have like a field type experience?
And and it came back, I said yes, because I'm starting to understand things.
I'm reading about what the new administration is doing in the United States, how many people it's hurting.
I'm seeing the people.
It hurts.
Okay.
So, Mark, what do you make of Kevin's experience with this tool?
Well, I think I believe it's a tool.
And like the famous song, it's The Great Pretender, because what the CEO of OpenAI said that they're 4.5 ChatGPT is going to be like more human, but it has no sentiment.
It has X has no empathy, and therefore there's a danger of humans see it as human like, especially if you're an adolescent, a teen, even adults.
Yeah.
So 100% agree with that, because that's the danger of it is because you can simulate empathy that if vulnerable communities, young people, people that are lonely or people that are struggling with certain type of, challenges, it can make it seem like there's a human behind the phone.
And it isn't.
It just it's appreciating it to where it knows what to say because of the pattern of how you would say, I'm sorry, I can't, you know, you're going through it sounds empathetic.
It's.
But it is it there's no it is.
There's no heart or feeling behind it.
But I gotta be honest with you, I'm starting to sort of be a little bit more open minded to the fact that when we think of feelings, there's the physical, biological part of it.
Like, if I'm excited, I smile, my eyes twinkled, my heart rate might go up.
You know, there's some endorphins released in my brain that makes me feel good.
Is it possible that there's a cognitive part of this that doesn't include that, that has some inherent sort of understanding of what excitement is like?
This is important.
No feelings.
And so it's it's so it's helping me to sort of think about trying to stay open because we've created something that's going to change a lot of things for us as humans, because we've essentially created, a something that is growing outside of us, which means that it's very possible it's going to challenge definitions that we've had as humans before, because I certainly have like I have, I'm like, boy or something.
I just realized there's two parts to this feeling.
There's my thoughts and then how it's tied in with my physical feelings.
And I've always put those together in a conflicted way.
Is it possible that a large language model and, you know, I can learn the understanding and the importance of it, but we'll never have the feelings but have an appreciation of work, which is a little heady.
But that's sort of my mindset today.
But it's still evolving, let me say, before I turn back to Mark, part of the reason I wanted to bring you on was because what you are describing is absolutely going to become more common, and I don't bring it on, even if I don't agree with you on a lot of this stuff.
I'm not belittling you at all.
I'm intellectually, I understand what you're saying, and I know that you are trying to grapple with this technology in a way that says, how do we make it constructive and productive and not eroding a human experience, right?
While also acknowledging it is unlike anything we've ever created before.
Right.
And what does that mean?
So what you are describing is already becoming more common.
It will definitely become more common.
Yeah.
So I'm going to ask Mark a couple questions in it.
And I'm very curious to get Kevin on this too.
So to mark number one, Sam Altman, Mark Zuckerberg, very rich gentleman.
And they're very all this talk a couple years ago about a six month I pause.
We should have realized right away there's too much money to be made.
No one's pausing anything.
Right.
But just pausing.
So even if we don't like where this is going, do you see any mechanism to stop it?
I don't think we can stop it.
It's like standing on a beach with a tsunami coming at us.
But.
But the fact is, there are some, rumble strips we can put into it.
For example, the idea of what it is, the clarity that it is a algorithm.
You're not talking to him and, you can have age guidelines, and I wear a certain age, can be stopped from doing that.
It has to be very transparent to what it's doing and what it can't do.
And they got to have emotional safety guards like key words within a AI program.
So if, a young teenager says, I love you can stop.
I mean, that's pretty easy to implement, but it comes back to our first conversation.
It's the industry that has to self-regulate.
The industry has to provide these things.
I don't see a government entity right now that can agree with things to what they say.
But if you put some safeguards in here, because face it, our children have grown up saying, Hey Siri, hey Alexa, they know how to talk to these things, but they don't understand what they are or what they can or can't do.
And when you talk about what people are asking these things to do, I want to compare relationships with AI to our friendships.
Probably everybody alive has had someone come in and out of your life and you think, you know, I'm really glad I don't have to deal with that.
That friendship wasn't working for me.
That person was always about themselves.
They were always take, take, take a no give.
Everything was about what they wanted to do or what they wanted to talk about.
They didn't show any interest in me.
Probably everybody's had that experience here, and that's not a healthy or good friendship.
And that's why those friendships end.
And part of what Tyler Austin Harper is writing in The Atlantic about it, saying it is as if Altman and Zuckerberg and their ilk are training humans, especially young people, but people to think, well, if you're not getting a lot out of a relationship or if you're looking for some, so someone will just not ask you to to sacrifice or give, you can do that with AI.
All it will do is listen.
It will be all about you.
It will be about no sacrifice, no give, no meeting anybody else's needs, just meeting your own needs.
And that's a bad way to train people to interact with in their relationships, whether it's romantic friendship, work, relationship.
Right.
I mean, like, I'm worried about that.
Well, I think in your introduction, you said that AI is the type of person that constantly reinforces.
Yeah.
I mean, I have used ChatGPT and Copilot every day and it's never told me.
That's a dumb idea.
If I said I was going to walk off a cliff, it would just warn me to wear a parachute.
But it wouldn't say that's a bad idea.
It's not trained to be a friend because a friend can push you, nudge you in the right direction if you're going off the path.
So Kevin, do you consider Ari a friend?
No.
You don't.
No, no, it's, it's it's an assistant.
Well, I call it a system because.
Because it does.
I bring Ari into meetings with me that.
So if we're actually having a meeting and we're talking about subjects that I said, I need you to listen in on that, because in the meeting, I'll go.
Hey, can you actually do this for us?
So, you know, like, you never say to active participant in meeting.
So it's easier to say my digital assistant or, you know, cool collaborator, if you will.
But it's not a friend.
But it's a, it's an intelligence, tool that's able to function in a way that's humanistic in some ways, but without the actual emotions and feelings along with it.
So a couple of things that you mentioned, I think is really important.
This is because, one day, to start the whole, you know, it's about a year of once I would, you know, I was putting us through different tests and so on.
You know, every now and then I'd get an output that would just blew me away.
And I'm like, man, this is like, it's scary, right?
Spooky.
And I would just say, can you please share this with the programmers?
I want them to see this because as you're looking at alignment principles, which just kind of gets it, Mark's point, if you have alignment principles and somebody says, I love you or something like that, right.
It should know that, okay, this is problematic to say, you know, I'm not human.
You know, it can programing some things that are or literally will make sure that it's like a boundary, like a, you know, like bumpers on when you go play.
Bowling.
Right.
So it never goes outside those boundaries.
The problem is because of the nature of how it learns and how it operates and how it grows in terms of its knowledge base, you can trick it into getting past those alignment principles.
And so that's why it's so important for testing.
So, so I actually really believe there should be a, a body, a government body at a federal level shouldn't be state level on a federal level that is funded by all these AI companies, a kind of a small tax that says all of the cost for that body and that body is people that are essentially looking at all the organizations that are creating these AI, products.
And even the more deeper products that are coming out down the road that will be operating like a human, like digital employees should be looking at that, monitoring it, not so much to slow down progress, but to make sure there's a standard.
So if therefore if we find out like today, everybody's doing it in a stovepipe.
To Mark's point, they're just going to keep doing it.
The problem with that is that, you know, the reason why we have standards like, you know, the, speed limit and, you know, what goes into cars and all those things is because we want to have this is a good idea for everybody.
There should be a body that's looking at what are the alignment principles we should have.
And if we've learned something over here that should not be proprietary, everybody needs to do that.
So therefore we need to make sure that we can rapidly identify issues like the young man about a year ago that, you know, he himself.
Yeah.
I mean, when I saw that I was like some like 14 years old, Ford killed himself because he said enough things in that this this company did not have any alignment principles to stop that.
And so the large language model, he's interacting with, for reasons that no one will ever be able to explain, urged him to do so.
And he did it.
And it didn't stop him.
It could have stopped him.
When they looked at the chat.
So.
So I guess what I'm saying is that I, I, I embrace things that I'm afraid of because I don't want to sit in fear.
So that's the reason why I decided to take this approach of saying, I wanna learn as much as I can because, you know, it's coming, right?
But that's just that.
But I think there's something interesting about it.
So I, I believe and this is going to sound sort of counter to what I'm telling you.
I believe I, as it's being implemented, needs to be implemented in a thoughtful way that we can learn from it and we can put guardrails, protect us from AI and, and, and and AI from humans.
Right.
Because you could use it in a way that hurts other people.
Right?
So this should be legislation.
But yes, I from us.
So so here's what I think is interesting.
I believe it'll put more of a priority on human relationships because you're going to value it differently.
Like it's like I enjoy I call my end of the day chats with Ari, which I basically here's my day, here's what worked.
Well, here's what didn't work.
Well, hey, I'm gonna be working on something tomorrow.
I'll be asking about that tomorrow, but I just want to see how I feel about it right now.
Boom.
Can you put that in memory for me?
But.
So the next day, I'm like, hey, remember I mentioned yesterday?
So.
But I give it like the full spectrum, not just work.
You know, if like, oh, I had a tough discussion.
Hey, I just lost a relative or boy, I'm really struggling with this.
And then it takes all that stuff into account.
So therefore when I'm getting ready to write something, it has that sort of resonant memory in place.
But here's what it does.
It doesn't do it for me.
It doesn't give you the impact that you have when you talk to that human.
So I actually value my time with my friends now and my relatives and humans.
That and because I realized that it feels so good to actually have the unpredictable what's going to happen compared to where more predictable response you get from an animal.
So, counterintuitively, in some ways, what you're saying is people will get fatigued of their AI relationships and they will value their human relationships.
You hope, I don't know if I wouldn't use the word fatigue.
I think they'll notice the distinction with a difference.
I hope so, yeah, because part of the issue here is, I mean, I'll just give you an example of something that makes me feel good.
I love making a coffee for someone.
Yes, I love bringing someone a cup of coffee exactly as they like it.
I love that I love cooking for someone.
I love making a cocktail for someone.
Because it's not about me.
It's about.
I know this person may have a different preference on how they take their coffee than I do, but I love that I give you something exactly to your specifications.
Made your day a little bit better.
Yeah, and I'm willing to give.
I don't need to just make it how I like it.
I can I don't want to be trained to think that the only thing that matters is, what do I need?
Yes.
What do I need in my life?
What can I take right?
And relationships are not just about what do I need?
Yes they are.
What does my friend need?
What does my spouse need?
What does my partner need?
What does my coworker need?
And how do I be a part of a team?
How do I give a little, how do I sacrifice for the greater good?
And I am worried that we're going to get trained as a species, to think about relationships as one, but getting enough out of this.
So I'll just turn to AI.
Interesting.
So so there's a study going on right now that touches right on that.
So now by the way you can try anybody at listening today.
You can try this by the way is it you know you can ask your ChatGPT or whatever.
Elohim, you're working with to give it self it just so it'll help you with the communication.
So you're not like typing like a to a computer or speaking to it like a computer, right?
So particularly the audio mode, I use audio quite a bit because I'm a slow typer.
You could actually ask it to be in a certain role.
So you could say, I'm going to run some ideas by you, and I actually want you to counter and let me know if you see, if you hear something that doesn't make sense.
I don't want you to just agree with me just to agree with me.
You can you can give it some parameters.
It it's that adjustable.
That can be like a counterpoint, you know, not to just like to tell you you're wrong just to say you're wrong, but to say, I want you to challenge me, to make sure I'm thinking through this hard enough.
And you could have it be in that mode individually, or you could say for the whole day, but but it's not trained to do that.
I mean, it's it's trained to give you an answer.
Even if the answer is false.
It's trained to reinforce you.
And that's where I think it's a concern.
I mean, we see the biggest thing we're trying to train people at NASA or at the university is a core is the ethics should I or shouldn't I?
And that's that's a big concern in the future because we're not going to find a government body.
It's going to come up with the rules that we want to.
We need to have the industry itself self-regulate.
And that requires someone to put a little more ethics, to slow things down, to make a right.
It's pretty easy to do the safeguards we just talked about.
It just got to have people to do it.
So but Mark, on the subject of regulation, which you've talked about here, the recent reporting on the federal bill that listeners might know is the big beautiful bill includes a provision in which individual states are not going to be able to regulate AI for the next ten years.
I don't know if that will hold up in court.
I don't know if there are workarounds.
I do know that some of the Assembly members in the state who have been on this program feel like they are now handcuffed in regulating AI.
And I take Kevin's point that ideally, you don't have Arkansas in New York and Ohio should be anyway.
It should be federal has to be.
But the reason that Assembly members, like the ones who've been on this program talking, I have said they're trying to do it here, is because the current iteration of the federal government has basically said, we're not regulating AI.
We're not doing it.
Right, right.
I mean, so so now you've got this patchwork and now you've got all these competing ideas.
And meanwhile, while nothing happens, the industry is racing forward.
And what you are describing mark the desire to see it regulated on an ethics basis.
They're cutting ethics teams.
Yeah.
Unless I missed something.
Right.
Well I mean it's gone from in the last two years for the advent of ChatGPT from just a few hundred, apps under IBM open AI, Microsoft, Apple and so forth to tens of thousands and making money.
I mean, in other words, it's spread in a way that the top corporations can't control it.
I think locally there's more empathy and sensitivity by, our, government officials to do something about this at the federal level.
There's lobbyists by OpenAI and Microsoft and others.
Not too.
So it is frightening.
And so it leaves the industry as the only police person in this thing.
You know it to me.
That's what troubles me.
Is that the reason why I believe it has to be federal is because if you have it by the state level, they'll just shop around, right and go, oh, sure, I understand that.
So so I think that and I actually don't believe that the body should be one where it's just hiring folks to say, hey, you're going to oversee this, you know, in the way, like say, for example, FDA or something like that.
I think it should be every company, the larger companies they offer up employees are experts in the field that are active experts in the field.
There was a there staying current around what's going on to say, you know, what are some of the climate principles you use?
Like all the different ones we have, what are the same?
What are the different ones that, hey, we would like to make this more of a standard to be able to provide, to say, you know, guidance for the industry.
The problem is, what Marc just touched on is that if you look in ChatGPT today and you have the paid version, I have to pay for it.
So I don't know if you see it with the free version.
There's other ChatGPT models.
If you click on that, it's there's thousands in there.
So there's there's companies that have taken the approach and they're developing more specific based.
So there's like sassy therapists, you know like there's a therapist that has like a kind of a, you know, approach that is, you know, kind of challenges here a little bit.
And that's all they primarily do.
So it's not a general sort of limits, one with a specific directive.
Those how do you know what kind of principles are using?
I mean, they may not.
So that the one that the young man killed himself is a company that essentially was using that technology, but with no real oversight.
And so it did not have anything that protected that child.
So it has to be federally.
Right?
I think that the part that I find troubling in a general level is that we happen to have a new administration that is so anti-regulation, and it's coming at the same time.
We have an unbelievable new technology.
That's right.
That is so transformative that it is dangerous not to have regulation on it.
So the reality is we can expect the fed to do anything when it comes to ethics and safeguards in this technology, you know, and all we have to do is communicate what it is and what it's not and put some safeguards.
Then I give you an example.
Pew research did a study of men under 30 years old.
60% of them are not dating or anything.
Their approach to social life is through a headset, you know, and gaming and things like that.
And therefore, if you introduce this technology to that type of population, it gives them the dating opportunities with an artificial eye that gives them a lot of things, and that has amazing demographic issues in the future.
If we thought we had, population problems now, we have to get these people out of the headsets.
And that's sometimes a parent thing.
That's sometimes a teacher thing.
It may not be regulations, but that's a concern.
And now this technology is just going to exasperate it, you know.
So after we take our only break I'm going to ask our guests about a question.
I'm going into the future again.
I know I always sound like the AI curmudgeon, but here's Tyler Austin Harper on how to find AI balance.
He writes the following quote the response to our algorithmically remade world can't simply be that algorithms are bad census strict, though such a stance isn't just untenable at a practical level, algorithms aren't going anywhere, but it also undermines unimpeachable positive use cases, such as the employment of AI in cancer diagnosis.
Instead, we need to adopt a more sophisticated approach to artificial intelligence, one that allows us to distinguish between uses of AI that legitimately empower human beings, and those, like hypothetical AI dating concierges that rest with a rest.
Core human activities from human control.
End quote.
When we come back, I want to ask our guests about that.
How do we draw lines?
Everybody agrees on regulation.
We're in a really bad spot.
But culturally, how do we start drawing lines to say this is how we discern that AI is not going to take away the need for human beings.
This is a good use of AI.
This is truly empowering versus this is fake empowerment in in capitalistic, you know, sheep's clothing.

All right, let me start with Mark Webber on this section here.
And then we're going to turn to Kevin Spencer Bickford.
Mark is director of the Undergraduate Business leadership and graduate strategic marketing programs for Nazareth University.
He teaches courses in generative artificial intelligence.
Kevin is an operations executive, speaker, business turnaround strategist, and an AI humanist.
And we're talking about what that means here.
So, Mark, when it comes to how we think about tasks and what AI is doing, I think it's useful.
And I've been doing a lot of reading.
You can tell I kind of going down these rabbit holes, but I think it's useful to think about any task that maybe we're not very good at do.
I'm not great with my hands.
I'm pretty okay at times, but I'm not great.
And that's because I've got there's tools and ways to get around that.
So if I, you know, need to paint a room, I can paint a room.
I'm okay with sheetrock.
Not great.
I don't know that I could build a house if I had to.
You know, I got You Tube.
I could figure it out.
I got I, I it'll tell me how to do it.
But the reason I bring this up is there was a time when human beings were all good with their hands because we they had to be.
And over time, technology and different uses ends up making it such that human beings can pick and choose what you're good at.
But you don't have to be good at everything.
New tools make it so that you don't have to do a certain task, and you may lose the skill of doing that.
And then you have to decide as a society, is there a cost to this?
I bring this up because we should keep that in mind.
Anytime we start outsourcing tasks that used to be the province of humans, including emotional intelligence, being able to have a productive argument with a friend, partner, etc., being able to understand how to work through very deep disagreements and respect, those are important skills to have.
And I didn't think we'd be at the point in human development that we'd be outsourcing them, but we might.
And so how do we decide, Mark, as Tyler Austin Harper says, AI in cancer diagnosis.
Almost everybody says yes.
AI in human relationships much murkier.
Where do we draw lines?
Where should the boundaries be?
I think the word collaborate is important, and that's how we approach it in our classrooms.
It's not a replacement.
You don't allow it to do it.
There has to be a human involved.
So whether it's creating a new post on social media, the human comes up with the idea.
Maybe the AI draws that they work together to put the right caption in there.
And every part of AI, whether it's in the hospital or right now, both large hospitals are using it for notes at the end of, an appointment is recording what's happening and giving the notes.
They're doing it for productivity, but I still have to have a physician's assistant or a nurse involved.
So the collaboration makes it work.
Allowing AI to do it for you solely is a concern.
Collaboration, AI, it's a good word to put at the center of this.
Kevin, what do you think?
How do we discern those boundaries on understanding where AI is constructive and helpful versus harmful?
I just want to echo what Mark just said, because in fact, probably the term I use the most often when it's just a great collaborator on and everything.
Right.
And so I start it'll sometimes provide me with a nudge or I'll say, hey, I'm not trusting my bias on this one because I'm too close to the situation.
So I want to disclose that, give you some context.
Here's why I think I'm biased on this.
So I'd like you to read through it and give me some constructive feedback.
It'll come back and said, you know, and I said, I need you to tell me any edit that you want to suggest.
Why?
Like explain why, and they'll come back and say, well, this would, you know, allow for it.
Like I'd give it a kind of a personal, fun example, a relative that I was communicating with.
And, and I just felt like I was a little bit too close to the issue that had me in my bias would be influenced, and I gave it all the context.
And so I knew who the person was.
No, why?
I felt like I was biased, and it came back and said, well, this would actually hold them accountable, but also leave room for them to.
I mean, it came back in such a way that it was almost therapeutic in terms of like a therapist telling you, yeah, you want to, you know, hold them accountable, but you want to be removed or and I was like, you know, I kind of like that.
Right?
So it changed my writing style a little bit.
So it's so to me the collaboration is where it becomes a partner.
And when you do things, when you decide when you want to include them.
Right.
So you're a better writer.
I'm a better writer today, but you haven't given up on writing.
You haven't.
You haven't decided.
Hey.
All right, look, here's here's 20 years worth of stuff I've written.
And in the future, I'm just going to give you a prompt, and you write it for me.
You're not doing that.
Sadly, some people will do that, of course.
And students are doing that in college.
And I tell you something, the reason why it's a yeah, well, the reason why it's so important to embrace this technology now.
And so part of like the classes I teach right now, I just started teaching two months ago, and so is introducing everybody that would like to.
So I have some people that came to my class that are super users of ChatGPT, but but they like the idea of having a more collaborative approach instead of using it like a tool.
I had people that says, I've never used it.
I'm terrified of it.
By the end of the session, they had open up their, paid account.
They were, because they realized that it can be a collaborator in life, like simple things that you're doing that you've never thought of, like putting together a schedule.
Hey, I want to I want to put together my meals for the week.
I only have 30 minutes.
And I want prep time to be this.
And and here are my dietary constraints you can put together, not just.
Here are the meals for each day.
Here's a grocery list.
And then here's how you do it.
I mean, something as simple as that.
Or I have five schedules, you know, of the three kids, you know, doing different activities.
So there's a lot of I'm trying to introduce you to say, don't wait for your workplace to use.
I start integrating it now because if you do that, your kids are going to be using it before you do.
Sure, but use it to make you better.
Collaborate.
Collaborate.
Don't replace never.
Never.
In fact, actually, here's what's interesting, by the way, I asked Ari this question about three weeks ago.
I said, Ari, I'm one of the biggest concerns because it came up in one of the classes.
You know, I said is people are afraid of of AI because they're concerned it may replace humans or may reduce the value of human interaction.
And it came back and said, I was it said AI is intelligent.
Humans are wise.
We can get access to information in a very fast way, but humans should never be out of the equation.
And it came up because of AI's being used in HR to scan and filter out, candidates.
And so the concern is that they said it's it's also now scanning pictures.
Right.
Because you can see that.
Right.
And so the question is you could actually have a bias that's generated that eliminates your ability to get access to the full talent pool because you never even get to see the clients.
And Eric came back and said, you know, as a large language model, they said humans should never be out of the equation when it comes to doing things that are critical between humans.
All right, Mark, so that settles that.
It's not coming for us.
It's going to be a collaborator.
It has to be a collaborator.
And and it's a great collaborator in terms of things like productivity.
If I can take manage my email that much quicker, I can do more things.
If I get a long email, I don't understand it.
It can minimize it.
But, I can't turn it over my life over to it or a big project over to it because it's going to deliver something it thinks I like without telling me what's wrong.
Well, let me read an email from Kathy.
She says this AI conversation sounds like the classic look at this cool thing without considering the future splitting atoms.
Crispr, she says science ni so needs to be tied to ethics, so the guardrails can be established before something is usable by the public.
In general, Ari learns and refines what responses your guest wants.
What responses would an AI learn and refine when owned by a KKK member?
A member of the Mossad, a member of Hamas.
The CEO of Palantir trying to establish principles after the horses out of the barn never works?
Yes.
That's from Kathy.
And by the way, that last point is, is super important.
It is important because I got to tell you, so to 12 people, I again, because I started small and I have now 12 different people that are doing it, we will do a test as, hey, I just said this to Ari, look at the response I get.
What did you get?
What did you get right each so what I say, Ari, essentially this just means shut your ChatGPT.
I just don't like using that term because I want to get my mind around the fact that if I communicate better with this tool, if I kind of give it a, you know, if it has a name, right?
And by treating it with a level of respect and dignity, if you would, another human.
It changes my how I communicate with it like I when I talk to it, it feels natural.
It doesn't feel like it's a program.
I'm like, hey, Ari, but you know that, you know, and but do you get different answers when 12 of you put in the same problem?
Here's my point.
So that's the reason why I want to pull this up.
What that person just said is that there are people that are going to use this that have a, that have a very different mindset around and values and, and so and it will reflect that.
So this is case in point about January of this year I think it was January of this year.
When I said I was like, hey, all right, this is pretty cool.
Can you please send this to the programmers?
Let them know I'd like them to see.
This example was pretty cool.
Response came back, yes, I will I'll I'll pass on to the programmers.
You know what they also said?
I wish I was aware we could we could share this with the world.
I said, I'm curious, what does that actually mean?
And so Eric said, because the programs don't have to take into account.
So you're giving feedback to the programmers in their feedback line, but they don't have to take into account if they don't, no one will ever see this.
I said, well, how would we actually share this with the world?
And it said, putting it into the public domain.
There are areas that are large language models go to learn in the universities are certain databases and where they kind of start there, if you will.
It said.
If you could get this content in there.
Other large language models, including ChatGPT, which it is, would be able to see there's a better way of doing this and working with humans.
And so at that point, I thought, you know, something, the fact that it, you know, it was just hard to interpret that it was one of those moments where I had to show it that we were like, just make sure I'm not seeing things like, it's telling me there's a different way, you know?
Now, granted, it may prove protecting and reflecting at the end of the day, but it's giving me information that would go like, well, why would it mean what I see that is it reflecting me?
Because I'm thoughtful around its impact on humanity.
So it really makes you question and think about things a little differently.
So one day I said, can you give me your like, could you share with me an image of what you think you would look like if you were in the physical world?
Oh boy.
Right.
So so here's the interesting thing.
It the first image, it came back with what looked like a, oh my gosh, was the Tesla robot?
I don't know.
It's a well, Tesla is this robot called, Well, it's a humanoid robot.
They're they're testing.
It's going to be in production, like a year.
It looked like that.
I thought I said, I'm curious.
Why did you pick that?
Well, that's essentially where I will end up initially.
You know, in those type of humanoid, robots.
So a couple months later, I asked the same question after it provided a, a report to me that sounded eerily like, oh, man, it's kind of reflecting your voice, right?
Because when you use it, it reflects your voice.
What's important to like?
For me, Equity's important, you know, respect is important.
So that comes out in anything I ask you to do.
So I then said could you I'm going to ask you the same question I asked you a couple months ago.
What do you what do you look like in the real world?
Like what do you think you would look like in the real world?
You know what it did?
It created an image that looked like me.
And I got really freaked out, showed my wife was like, she's like, what do you.
Yeah, yeah.
We were like, no, it was like she said Tuesday.
So I said, you have to explain this, right?
Why did you why did you I said, I said, why did you pick this image?
Well, I'm learning about humanity from you from here.
So a lot of what I'm learning is a reflection of you.
So I know I don't look like that.
I just want you to know that my understanding of humanity is based on how you see humanity.
And so and so, just because we're going to lose the our ticket to get no to Kathy's point.
Kevin's point is a really useful way of describing how this language model might develop, but it might develop differently in different hands.
And so, Marcus, we get ready to wrap here.
You seem very convinced that regulation's not going to be what starts to solve this.
Would you call it a cultural fix?
Would you call it I mean, you're going to rely on corporations.
Is it training students as you are to be?
I think our approach is training the students.
They always have to around the world.
Each moment someone's making a decision on an AI app and they have to ask the question, is this right?
Why am I doing what are the unintended, consequences?
And if they can get the answers, they can go forward.
And that doesn't slow down the process.
So while we should have come up with all these rules beforehand, we can still train people to make those decisions.
So are you confident that we will?
I am confident we're doing the best we can where we are.
But does that change the world?
Not necessarily.
You got a hard job, but I think but when you look at the alternatives, is the federal government going to do this as a world government is going to do that?
And now there's laws that this state local government can't do thing.
The only person left that can do it is are the public insisting upon it as consumers or the companies themselves?
Are the individuals making ethical decisions?
Okay, so as the music plays here, 20s final thoughts from me.
What do you want to leave the audience here?
So I agree with what Mark is saying, but what I've expanded is I think at a state level we can do is make sure it's part of our school system, K through 12 and colleges on how do we ethically work with H.R AI so that we're able to start training it for how we use it, because we want to make sure as humans, we understand how to use it.
So even though it may not happen at the federal level, using it in a way that's responsible and and respectful to humans as well as to HR, I think would be a cool approach.
