I know firsthand the value of pushing yourself in the wild, and now, each week, I'll be challenging two families, each here for deeply personal reasons, to push themselves further than they've ever been pushed before.

They will head out on a three-day adventure of a lifetime that will test them physically, mentally, and emotionally.

- We've always done everything together.

- I know, but you have to do this.

Colin: They will learn to see loved ones in a new light, rebuild relationships, and find strength as a family.

Boy 1: For anybody who's ever doubted me, you don't need to doubt me anymore.

Colin: But in the end, only one family can come out on top and take home the $10,000 cash prize.

- This is gonna be a dirty one.

Colin: This week, the Boyer family from Franconia, New Hampshire... - My daughter and my son are definitely what's keepin' me goin' right now.

Colin: Will compete against the Espinosas from Lyndhurst, New Jersey.

Man: That's what we're here for, to make each other better, and I think that's what this is doing.

Colin: Who will be the first to raise their flag... - More rapids, more fun.

Woman: There you go!

Colin: ...and be this week's Survivalists?

Espinosas: We are the Espinosas, and we're from Lyndhurst, New Jersey.

Man 1: Our family's super competitive, we take everything very serious.

- We don't wanna get too cocky here.

We don't care if we lose or win... Woman 2: but we're here to win.

♪♪ - We're the Boyers from Franconia, New Hampshire.

Woman 1: We're a pretty energetic family.

Man 2: Whatever we do, we go in 100% and we're pretty aggressive.

We've actually been thrown out of competitions for our exuberance on the sidelines.

- Him, not us.

[laughs] - Hey, you were kicked out, too.

♪♪ - Families, welcome to Survivalists!

[cheering] Man 1: Thank you!

- Espinosa family, all the way out here from New Jersey!

How you feelin' about havin' your kids out here in this challenging, backcountry environment?

- Well, I'm excited because they're gonna get to experience something new for them, definitely.

We've never done this before.

Camping is not our thing.

- I'm that person who likes to stay in a nice hotel.

- There's no such thing as going up in the mountains or whatever.

Anderson: This experience is gonna help them be more independent and know that there's more to life than just going to a mall.

- What makes the Espinosa family unique?

Marilyn: We don't consider that there are, like, leaders, or followers in, in the family, but we definitely have, uh, different opinions all the time.

Girl: My mom and I do argue.

It's an everyday thing, I don't think there's one day we haven't argued.

- She acts a lot like me when I was her age.

She's sassy, she thinks she knows everything, so I'm kind of paying back what I did to my mom.

- It's not that we don't get along, it's just the small, sensitive things that we get annoyed about.

- The difference is that my mom was very sweet.

I'm not that way.

Colin: Marilyn!

The Espinosa family flag, what does it mean to you?

Marilyn: We let the kids be very open-minded.

We always talk about ideas, so that's why we choose to put the idea and the compass in there is because we know where we're going.

- Amazing.

Boyer family, do you see any mountains like this where you guys are from?

Man 2: We have a lot of mountains in New Hampshire.

They don't look like this at all, though.

- Are you, uh, more of the outdoorsman of the family?

- I did a lotta campin' with my father growin' up.

His idea of camping wasn't necessarily goin' to a campground.

It was going out in the woods and taking what we need, and then found someplace flat, set up camp.

We haven't done a lot of camping.

I'm disappointed I didn't have that opportunity to take 'em, so, you know, gonna try to make up a lotta time, and I think there's a lot more we can gain out of this experience than just a competition.

Uh, just workin' together and doin' this as a family is gonna be really important, too.

- Anabel, as the oldest sibling, kind of nearing adulthood at this point, how is the working dynamic with your parents at this phase of your life?

- So I actually moved out to college, so they haven't been around me for a little while.

Me and my brother are both old enough that we're basically adults, and so I think that this experience, I hope that they view us as the adults that we are now instead of the little kids that they had to yell at whenever we didn't close the refrigerator.

- The kids have good ideas and good thoughts, and we haven't given 'em the chance because we're the parents.

- I look at them, and I still see the little babies that they were.

You know, at one point, I was like their everything, and now I'm just their annoying mom.

[laughs] Colin: You guys have this beautiful flag that you designed, can you tell me what this stands for?

Boy 2: Our flag represents the Old Man of the Mountain in Franconia, New Hampshire, so I thought it was very important to show where we came from.

The, uh, circle represents the circulation of the water.

- We swim in it, we ski on it, and it's an endless cycle.

Colin: Okay!

You guys are gonna be doing battle against each other out in these beautiful, yet challenging mountains.

You'll be going on a three-day, 20-mile-long journey.

Day One, you'll paddle six miles of Class IV river rapids, take a plunge in the frigid water, and then trek to your first camp for the night.

Day two, you'll face a brutal, 3,500-foot vertical climb to over 10,000 feet, leap into an icy alpine lake, then scramble down a rocky, 30% slope to your second camp.

Day three, you'll have to slog through a quarter mile of thick swamp and then sprint to the finish, where the first family to raise their flag will be declared the winner.

Colin: Got these, uh, backpacks over here.

Deborah: Oh my gosh!

Adam: [laughs] Anderson: Is this really what we're playing for?

Colin: You guys are playing for $10,000 cash!

Boyers: [amazed exclamations] Espinosas: [cheering] Deborah: [cheers] Adam: I'm super excited about the $10,000, and we're gonna go get it.

- Before I send you out there, I'm going to give you the opportunity to visit the General Store, where you can grab all the essential items to survive our three-day extreme expedition, but you'll only have 90 seconds inside to find everything you need.

To gain even more time, I've set up three challenges for you to play.

Each challenge you win, you'll add an additional 30 seconds to your clock.

This first challenge is one of the most important survival skills that you'll need: shelter.

♪♪ In this challenge, whoever can set up a two-person tent the fastest will win their family an extra 30 seconds in the General Store.

- Oof.

- Boyer family, who have you selected to build the shelter?

- I'm gonna do it.

Colin: Adam!

Who's he gonna be squaring off against in the Espinosas?

- Right over here, Anderson.

Colin: Come on up, we're gonna see who can build this tent the fastest.

Anabel: Let's go, Dad!

Marilyn: Woo!

Anabel: You've got this.

Adam: I was nervous, but I've got my family there rooting for me, so I've gotta remain calm.

I can't panic, I gotta set an example right now for how we're gonna do it for the rest of this competition.

Colin: Go!

Anabel: Go, Dad!

You got it!

Marilyn: Go Andy, go, go, go!

- Here we go.

Adam maybe looks like he's had a little more experience at this.

- Yeah, you got it, you got it.

Keep it up.

Marilyn: Come on, baby, come on.

Anabel: Let's go, you got it.

Colin: Anderson's still trying to get all of his, uh, tent poles assembled.

Adam is puttin' his first one in.

- Don't rush it, just get it done.

Agatha: You gotta go faster.

Marilyn: Come on, baby, come on.

Anabel: You got it, you got it, Dad, just keep working.

Marilyn: Come on, baby.

Adam: I think this is upside-down.

- Adam is unclipping his!

Anderson: When I saw that he was switching up his fly, I'm feeling like I can catch up.

- You need the top, too, okay?

Colin: This competition is not over.

♪♪ Adam: All right, Colin, check it out!

- Good work, Dad!

Colin: Adam, you're very close, but you're missing a clip.

- Oh my gosh, Dad!

Colin: Anderson's still going, Adam doesn't have it, he's not finished.

Anabel: He's catching up fast.

- I'm lookin' around, and I look up, and there's the hook, right there.

Just sorta layin' on the top of the tent, so I hooked it to the poles.

I just clipped that!

Colin: Test again.

Marilyn: Come on, complete.

- [cheering] Colin: Boyers, you won the first challenge.

Deborah: Nice job, Adam!

Colin: Adam, you did it, congratulations!

Adam: I'm excited that I set the standard, we won the first challenge, and this is gonna be great momentum going forward.

Colin: Anderson, I'm sorry my friend.

Anderson: Hey, it's all good.

First battle, we lost it.

But we haven't lost the war.

Colin: Boyer family, congratulations.

You've taken the lead in this first competition, earning your family an additional 30 seconds in the General Store, but not to worry, Espinosas.

We're gonna move on to our second of the survival competitions, knot tying.

- Oh!

♪♪ Colin: Welcome to the knot-tying challenge.

Adam: All right!

Families: [cheering] Agatha: Yeah!

Colin: Up here, I've set up a system of six different knots.

I'm gonna give you seven minutes to tie as many knots as you possibly can.

You have to tie the specific, corresponding knot on the placard through the piece of gear, clip it to the stump, and it needs to hold off the ground.

Whoever wins this challenge wins their family 30 seconds additional time in the General Store.

Boyers, who's it gonna be?

Noah: It's gonna be me.

Colin: Noah, all right!

Espinosas?

- I will.

Colin: All right, Agatha, you're up first.

Marilyn: Woo!

Go, Aggy!

Colin: On my go.

Three, two, one, go!

Marilyn: Go Aggy!

Colin: Looks like she's starting off with the clove hitch.

- Come on, baby, you got this.

Marilyn: You got this, Aggy.

Anderson: There you go.

Colin: Looks like the knot's tied right but maybe the slack isn't enough to get it off the ground.

Agatha: I knew I was doing everything right, it was just the slack part that was messing me up.

Colin: You can go to the next one, but this one won't count.

Anderson: Come on.

Let's go, relax.

Marilyn: Come on, Aggy.

Colin: Next up, she's workin' on the trucker's hitch.

Three minutes have passed, now.

She still hasn't gotten a single knot up.

The knot is not correct.

- Go with a different one, that's taking too long.

Agatha: My strategy was just, to focus to not hear none of my family screaming.

- Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on!

- Just kept going.

Colin: You've only got two minutes remaining.

No knots tied.

Marilyn: Yeah, there you go, Aggy, you got it, you got it, mama, you got it.

Go, go.

Mami, go back to the clove!

Colin: Very good, that is a correct bowline knot.

Agatha: I was kinda getting nervous 'cause I wanted to win.

Marilyn: There you go, mama.

Colin: Three... two... one, stop!

Marilyn: Great job, Aggy.

Anderson: Great job, mamá.

Marilyn: Great job, Aggy.

Colin: All right, yes, that is a correct clove hitch.

Noah: My family and I have been practicing knots, and I'm pretty confident I can get at least three right.

Colin: Go!

Adam: Go!

Anabel: Go, Noah!

Deborah: Come on, No!

Colin: Same as Agatha, he's going for the clove hitch first.

Anabel: You got it, you got it.

Colin: Well, you've got it suspended off the ground, but this is not a clove hitch.

Noah: I don't understand what's wrong with my clove hitch.

It's adding a lot of pressure.

Colin: No, that is not a clove hitch.

Anabel: Noah, go to the next one.

Colin: He's moving on to the bowline knot.

Halfway done.

Agatha: Come on, Noah.

Colin: Agatha's two knots might be enough.

Anabel: You got it.

That is not a bowline knot.

Anabel: Noah, do a different one!

Colin: Noah's movin' on to the sheet bend, can he get that tied correctly?

Noah: I'm confident in the sheet bend knot because there's not a lot going on, and I feel like I can do it.

Colin: Correct, he's got one knot tied correctly.

Now he's coming back to the clove hitch.

He needs to get three knots to take the win.

Adam: You got it, you got it!

Anabel: Is that right?

Colin: Correct, you have the clove hitch tied.

Deborah: Good job, No.

Anabel: That's okay.

Colin: But that means you tied with Agatha.

Colin: All right, you guys are going head to head to tie a knot that you did not previously tie.

Whoever can get that first knot tied quickest hitched to the post wins this challenge and the 30 seconds for their family in the General Store.

All right, we're in the bonus round.

Agatha's doing the sheetbend, Noah is doing the bowline.

Marilyn: Come on, Aggy, go, go, go, go, go!

Colin: Now she's tryin' to get it off the ground.

♪♪ Families: [laughing] - Yes!

- Woohoo!

Colin: Unfortunately, that is not a bowline knot.

Colin: The score is now tied.

- We're all tied up, so we're not losin' yet.

- We are headed to the third challenge, which is the water challenge.

Noah: All right, let's go!

♪♪ Colin: Here's how this challenge works.

You fill up your buckets of water using these pumps, then you run down to this side, filling up your barrels.

Once the barrel's filled up high enough, you turn on the spigot.

Whoever can fill up their bottle the fastest wins this challenge and 30 seconds additional time in the General Store.

For the Boyer family, we've got Deb and Anabel, and for the Espinosas, Matthew and Marilyn.

Deborah: This is my first challenge I'm doing, so I really wanna show that I can pull my weight, and, girl power and all that.

- [laughs] - It's only us, so we're gonna have to figure it out, right, Matt?

- Yeah, this is gonna be a dirty one.

- Okay.

[chuckles] Colin: Three, two, one, go.

All right, who's gonna get their barrel filled up first?

Matthew: Come on, come on, come on!

Colin: Marilyn is pumpin' hard.

Anderson: Come on, let's go!

Colin: Deb has got the first bucket of water, takin' a slight advantage over the Espinosas.

Matt: Come on, come on, gimme, gimme.

Colin: Boyer family seems to be workin' a little bit more quickly, although-- Whoa!

Matthew's got water goin' everywhere.

Matthew is soaking head to toe almost at this point.

- You're doin' good, Deb, keep it up.

Colin: Marilyn has a serious game face on.

Marilyn: This is hard.

It, it seems to be such a short distance, but you're like, carrying stuff, and pumping, and going back.

Adam: Good pace, Anabel.

Anderson: You guys got this, come on.

Keep it up, keep it up.

- Oh, shoot!

Colin: Whoa!

Matt took a spill there!

- [laughs] Matt: Well, I had to get there.

You know, it was a home run.

Slidin' was the best idea, to, to get there faster.

- I think he just fell.

- Yeah.

Colin: Wow, look at that serious face on Deb as she is pumpin' that water in those buckets.

Anabel: One more.

Colin: He's the youngest competitor out here, and he's still goin' hard.

Anderson: Arriba, papá.

Colin: Looks like the Boyer family are goin' for the spigot.

Adam: Oh, see now, line it up!

- Almost there, gimme, gimme!

Colin: Now, now the Espinosas are opening their spigot!

Anabel: We have never really had to work together like this, so I think it was a good opportunity for us to see our strengths and weaknesses.

Marilyn: We really tried our best, but the other team, they were good.

Colin: You guys ready to go to the General Store?

All: [assenting] Colin: All right, let's go!

♪♪ [clank] [doors creaking] - Welcome to the General Store!

Families: [cheering] - Before I release you into the wild for the next three days, I wanted to give you a little bit of time to shop for the important gear that you're going to need to take with you to survive.

Each family, I've given 90 seconds, but Boyer family, you won the shelter and the water challenge, so you have an additional 60 seconds.

Espinosas, you earned yourself an additional 30 seconds inside the General Store.

Here's the catch: everything you bring with you out into your circle, you have to bring with you the entire time, so you wanna carry enough, but not too much that it weighs you down.

This is a list of essential items.

You have to bring these with you no matter what.

Here's what's on the list: flint, water bottles for each participant, walter filtration, knife, first aid, and GPS.

If you fail to grab them, I have to give you a 30 minute time penalty at the start for each item you miss.

- Wow.

Colin: Boyer family, are you ready?

Adam: We're ready.

Deborah: Ready.

Colin: 'Kay.

Three, two, one, go!

♪♪ Anabel: 'Kay, look, look, look.

Dad, I got kerosene.

Adam: We have food.

The plan is I'm gonna take care of food, Noah's gonna take care of shelter and sleeping bags, Deb's gonna take care of clothing, and Anabel's gonna get everything else.

[laughs] Colin: Espinosas, go!

All right, both families are in the General Store now.

Marilyn: Forget about the vests!

Matt: Go, go, go, go, go.

Hmm!

Marilyn: Our strategy was each one of us will have a section of the store.

Colin: Whoa, barrels are flyin' around, things are flyin' off the shelves, this is wild!

Adam: Noah, did you get a backpack yet?

Marilyn: How many do you have, Matt?

Matt: Four!

Marilyn: Andy, you have it?

Anderson: Yeah, yeah.

Colin: Choose wisely!

Have you gotten all the essential items?

Noah: Do you have the GPS?

Anabel: Yeah, it's in here somewhere.

Noah: The water filter?

Marilyn: Did you need something else?

- Socks, socks, socks.

Where's the socks?

Deborah: Don't get much more, guys, I don't wanna have to carry it.

Colin: Five seconds.

Anabel: Who needs help, who needs help?

Colin: Throwin' things at her.

Two!

One second, done, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop.

No, nope, nope, nope, that's not comin' in, stop.

Boyers, you know, you guys had some extra time, but it looked like you were standin' around kind of at the end goin', "Hey, don't bring any more."

Was that part of the strategy goin' in?

- Yeah.

We tried not to get too much 'cause I know I'm not gonna be able to carry a lot.

Colin: Let's look at the essential items.

We've got the knife, GPS, four water bottles, the flint, first aid kit is right here.

Last but not least, I'm lookin' for the water filtration.

[ominous music] Colin: Here we go.

Deborah: Phew!

Colin: Nervous there for a second?

- I was nervous there for a second, yes.

Colin: Congratulations, Boyers, there will be no time penalties.

You'll be startin' right on time tomorrow.

Let's check in with the Espinosa family.

Anderson: All right.

Marilyn: Okay.

Colin: All right, so we've got... a first aid kit, GPS, knife, four water bottles, not just one flint, two flints.

Do we have a water filtration inside of here?

Marilyn: We forgot that.

Colin: Are you sure?

Marilyn: I'm 100% sure.

You were in charge of that, right?

So, yeah, we divided the stuff, and Agatha got here and she just realized that she forgot that.

- It was my fault, big time.

Marilyn: We planned something, but of course, the pressure is on, so we ended up missing things.

- Unfortunately, I have to give the Espinosa family a 30 minute time penalty tomorrow at the start line.

The Boyers will have the clear advantage.

That said, three-day expedition.

So there's plenty of opportunity for you guys to make it up.

But for safety reasons, I do have to give you a water filtration system, right here at the front of the General Store.

Marilyn: Oh, gosh.

Colin: We gotta be safe out there.

Tomorrow we embark on a very difficult challenge.

Pack your stuff up right now, get a very good night's sleep, I'll meet you on the trailhead at sunrise, and we'll begin.

Matt: But is that a lot of time?

Marilyn: 30 minutes?

It is a lot.

[orchestral hit] [tranquil guitar music] Colin: Everyone comes out here for a different reason.

Whether it's the Boyer family, whose kids, Noah and Anabel, want their parents to see them as responsible adults, or the Espinosa family, who need to strengthen a mother and daughter's bond through understanding.

The path is in front of them, and their journey awaits.

Colin: Welcome families to the start line of your three-day expedition.

This is day one.

Today, the Boyer and the Espinosa familes must first paddle downriver 6 miles of their 20 mile journey.

They will navigate the Class IV rapids-- Marilyn: Wooo!

Colin: Leap off a cliff into the frigid waters-- Deborah: There you go!

Colin: And finish with a trek up to nearly 8,000 feet.

As you can see, the first challenge is navigating this river.

♪♪ Anderson: Ooh.

Anabel: We're super excited about rafting, and we feel really confident in our skills in rafting, too, so... Other-- - I, I'm a little worried, 'cause Adam said that rafting's a lot like bronco riding, and, yeah, I'm not really into bronco riding.

- You nervous at all?

- Very, very.

Colin: Agatha, had to think anymore about the, uh, 30 minute time penalty?

Agatha: Uh, yeah, I couldn't really sleep without feeling guilty.

- Well, your mom's still smilin', seems like, uh, you guys aren't takin' it out too hard on your daughter here.

Marilyn: I mean, it is what it is, 30 minutes, it's, it's a lot, and we need to try our best.

Colin: Well, I'm gonna give you these canisters.

Inside each canister that you'll find at every checkpoint, there's gonna be coordinates as well as a clue that will give you the navigation to your next checkpoint.

On my go, open it up, read your first clue.

♪♪ Colin: To reach the first checkpoint, their whitewater journey takes them four miles through a deep canyon with fast-moving rapids that they must navigate successfully.

Anabel: Let's go, go!

Adam: Let's go, here we go!

Noah: Let's go!

Adam: Big rock!

Boyers: [cheering] Deborah: Slow down!

Adam: Yeah, you are a really good backseat driver.

Deborah: Yeah, y-yes I am.

So I have some back issues, so my family's gonna have to really take the reins on this.

Adam: This is right up your alley.

Deborah: Yep.

Slow down!

- [laughs] Deborah: I'm gonna be in charge of navigating, so that's gonna be my role.

Adam: Here we go, another one.

Deborah: Woo!

Woohoo!

Adam: Deb, how you doin' back there?

Deborah: Feelin' really refreshed.

Adam: You can backseat drive all day.

- Yeah!

Colin: Hopefully, the Boyers haven't gone too far.

Anderson: Waiting there an extra 30 minutes for us to get started, it felt like forever.

It felt like it was, like it's infinity.

Any second counts, you're lookin' at the watch every five seconds, and you think it's like, five minutes.

It's a bit, you know, of stress.

♪♪ - We gotta paddle together, Noah.

Noah: Yep.

Adam: I think the biggest challenge for us is gonna be paddling together because we have two people on one side paddling and just me on the other side.

You gotta do a little bit more work.

I see a lotta whitewater up ahead, guys.

- More rapids, more fun.

Family: [cheering] Colin: Okay.

Espinosas, three, two, one, go!

Matt: "Keep your eyes peeled for where the eagles nest."

Anderson: Which way is it?

Colin: All right!

Marilyn: Yeah, over there!

Agatha: I did forget the water filter, and those 30 minutes are all on me.

Colin: Good luck you guys, paddle hard to catch the Boyers!

Agatha: But I know my family and I are gonna try our hardest to catch up to them.

Anderson: Uh-oh.

Anderson: When we're first rowing, we're trying to do our best, and we're not in sync with each other... we're like, moving sideways instead of forward.

Marilyn: Is this the best we can do?

Marilyn: Okay, you guys are not going the same pace.

The deeper we go, the faster we go.

Agatha: Mami, that's what I'm doing.

Anderson: Matt, all right, guys, let's save that energy for now.

Just paddle and keep it quiet.

There was a little bit of, uh, arguing between the two females in the group.

Marilyn: Keep going.

Noah: "Jump off the rock, and continue on your raft."

I think it means I gotta jump off the rock.

Noah: I found the canister, and it told me to jump, so... I guess I'm the one jumping.

Deborah: Be safe.

I'm a little worried, um, 'cause sometimes he's not the most, um... you know... - Careful?

Now we're hikin', I'm not feelin' great about it, but we're gonna hike, and that's really what we came to do.

Colin: After successfully paddling downriver for two and a half hours, the families trade in their raft for their packs, and now must trek through woods and thick underbrush towards camp one.

Anabel: Let's go, guys.

We don't want it to be dark when we get there, and we wanna beat the Espinosas, obviously.

Marilyn: You look over there in those rocks.

I'm gonna go this way.

Anderson: Aggy, look at the tree.

Marilyn: Right there.

Agatha: Oh!

Marilyn: Right there, Aggy!

Agatha: Oh!

Anderson: "You are done with the row."

I feel like now that we're gonna be hiking and going on the ground for this new experience, we're gonna have a better shot and finish strong.

Matt: It's been a long journey.

♪♪ Colin: Today was a good day for both families.

The Boyers' strategy of working together paid off.

Deborah: We did everything today.

We were water babies and now we're land babies, and, uh, yeah, we've hit it all, and I'm exhausted.

Colin: While the Espinosas took their 30 minute penalty as a challenge, finished strong, and closed the gap.

Anderson: Finishing up the, this part of this trip, it made us feel accomplished, uh, just because we've never done it before.

Where are the pins?

Marilyn: Well, we need to put this, uh, clip up, here.

Anderson: We're doing exactly what we came here to do, which is to bond together.

We had our moments that we're struggling, but we got better and we finished strong.

Marilyn: Is this for this?

Anderson: I think so, yeah.

Anabel: The Espinosas seem to be struggling a little more than we do.

Marilyn: How do you know which one goes on top of what?

Does it matter?

Anderson: It doesn't matter.

Anabel: Do you guys want help?

Marilyn: We need to keep the focus of winning this competition, but the Boyer family, they're really-- Anderson: They're amazing people.

[fire popping] Anabel: We successfully started a fire with the Espinosas.

- And it's also gonna go out fast, so they're gettin' marshmallows.

- Hi, I'm Anabel, and this is Noah Boyer, and you're watching Survivalists.

Duh duh, duh duh!

Colin: The Espinosas are behind 21 minutes, but they're ready to give it everything they've got to catch up.

The Boyers were able to make good on the water yesterday, but they'll need to move fast to stay in the lead.

Anabel: So it's the start of day two.

Scenery's very different from yesterday.

We spend a lot of time hiking, so this is more of my family's, at least, forte.

Anderson: Communication has been the biggest challenge so far for everybody.

My two ladies in my house, the more they get along, the better for me because hey, their relationship is definitely a key to our family.

That's what we're her for, you know, to make each other better and I think that's what this is doing.

Colin: This is day two: a 9-mile hike that quickly turns into a challenging climb to over 10,000 feet to retrieve a clue from a frigid alpine lake, followed by a tricky 3,000-foot descent down a steep, rocky slope to finally reach camp two.

♪♪ Deborah: Welcome to day two.

The trek will be long.

Anabel: 'Kay.

Let's go that way.

Colin: With a 21 minute lead, the Boyers know it's important to get a quick start so the Espinosas can't follow their route and easily catch up.

♪♪ Anderson: Ooh, look at the terrain.

See how it looks?

And, uh, let's try to gain ground on them, and let's be smart about it.

If anybody needs help, speak up, that way we can help each other, okay?

Matt: Okay.

Anderson: 'Kay?

How do you feel, Agatha?

- I don't want any breaks, I just wanna keep going.

Anderson: Okay.

How about you, Matthew?

- My feet are freezing.

- All right, we're gonna start soon so they can warm up pretty good, okay?

- Okay.

Agatha: Okay.

Marilyn: Come on, Agatha.

Anderson: That way.

[GPS beeps] Deborah: Arriving.

Adam: Go check it out.

Noah: Yeah, that's it, I think.

Yeah.

Anabel: Nice, No.

Noah: Oh, no!

[laughs] "Find the place where the trees V."

Anabel: 'Kay, let's go.

Adam: Go!

[bird calling] Anderson: Agatha, let's get ahead, okay?

Marilyn: Is the blue arrow going straight, Aggy?

Agatha: Honestly, this thing's not even working.

Anderson: What do you mean, it's not working?

Marilyn: Give it to me, mami.

Well, at the beginning, we got a very tough start.

Mami, this is wrong.

This is so much wasted time.

Agatha: We took like, 10 minutes trying to figure out where the GPS is trying to go.

Marilyn: This is ridiculous.

Agatha: Mami, you can't comp-- Marilyn: We don't know where we're going.

Agatha: But then we realized we were taking the wrong turn.

Matthew: Mm-mm-mm-mm.

Anderson: Okay.

Marilyn: Now we're 30 minutes again behind.

Whatever, we gained yesterday.

That's it.

Colin: Having lost the trail, the Espinosas struggle to get back on course, losing valuable time right from the start.

Anabel: Keep the lead today, and keep it tomorrow.

Adam: Can't let 'em catch us today.

We gotta stay ahead today.

Anabel: That's all we gotta do.

It's a little tiring.

I think we're all a little winded already.

Adam: Hey, guys.

Noah: What?

Adam: Wait for Mom and I. Anabel: But hopefully we'll be able to make the rest of the journey safely.

[heavy breathing] Anderson: Let's go through here.

Marilyn: What is it saying, Aggy?

Agatha: Straight.

We're close.

Marilyn: Is it all right if I see if it was this way or no?

Agatha: Yeah, sure, then we'll go that way.

Anderson: Hey, just hold the GPS, don't disagree.

Let's go.

Agatha: She keeps saying the same thing.

I'm getting frustrated, but I'm just like, okay, like... Marilyn: What way is it?

Agatha: Go up here then!

Anderson: Right now our family is very frantic.

Marilyn: I'm not sure about the directions.

Agatha: I get a little annoyed.

I don't know her brain, I don't know what she's thinking right now.

Marilyn: This isn't working.

Anderson: For this to get better, we need our communication to get a little bit better.

Marilyn: Oh, it's here.

Anderson: Yeah, we're... we're finding our way.

Noah: It says, like, up here.

Adam: Oh, right there!

Guys, go straight, go straight.

Yeah.

You got the cannister?

Deborah: Good job.

Anabel: Prepare to be cold, prepare to be wet, but don't let the waters divide you.

- That way.

Colin: The final climb takes the families up to over 10,000, oxygen-depriving feet to a high alpine landscape and a pristine, snow-fed lake.

Anderson: Let's go, guys, you can do it, let's go!

[heavy breathing] Marilyn: We definitely can do this.

Agatha: Mm-hmm.

Anderson: Keep pushing.

You're doing good.

Agatha: Pushing more, push more I'm gonna pass out.

Marilyn: This is a lot of pressure because besides the part that we have to communicate, um, we also have to kind of like, win this.

Matt: We're running?

Marilyn: So what I'm doing right now, checking on everybody, communicating better.

Good job, Matt, okay?

I know it's hard, but, we can do this.

So yeah, I think that we're doing very, very good.

Anderson: All right.

Matt: Oh, there's a tree that says V. Anderson: There we go.

Right here, guys, come over here.

Marilyn: Okay.

Good!

Colin: The Espinosas are finally working together and hiking at a good pace.

Anderson: Come on.

Colin: But up ahead, the Boyers are feeling the effects as the route steepens.

Adam: I need to rest, guys.

Anabel: Wait.

Adam: I can feel the elevation in my lungs, and I can feel my legs just turning to rubber.

Everything's killing me right now.

Noah: Dad, you're killin' it my dude.

Adam: I'm not.

Noah: Yeah, you are.

Anabel: It's okay.

We have a little bit of steepness and then we're there, so let's just do it.

Adam: You know, I know my whole family is marching forward, and I know they're gonna continue to support me.

My daughter, my son are definitely what's keepin' me goin' right now.

Proud of you.

Anabel: Proud of you!

Noah: It's what you taught us.

♪♪ Adam: All right, let's go.

- [mimicking deer noise] Anderson: Wow.

She sounds like one.

Marilyn: Come on, keep moving, a deer is faster than you!

Anderson: Believe it or not, I think we're making ground, okay?

Matt: Making ground?

What does that mean?

Anderson: I think we're advancing better.

Marilyn: You're good, Aggy.

You're good.

Anderson: Today, the girls have been really good, and they're pushing each other.

Marilyn: I love you.

- She's being very, like, supportive and positive right now.

Marilyn: I know that the competition's important, but make sure that you guys see this and enjoy it, because we don't know when we're gonna be able to do it again.

Guys, we're doing better than what we think.

Anderson: It's challenging my whole family, and that's a good thing.

Noah: Absolutely gorgeous.

♪♪ Anabel: When you get to the top of the mountain, you're like, okay.

We're here, we can see everything, it's amazing.

- Being at the top of the mountain with the whole family?

That was one of the highlights just because we had accomplished what we had set out to do.

♪♪ Adam: All right, we gotta look by the shore, guys.

Noah: You got-- you gotta get wet.

Anabel: Oh, is it?

Yeah, it's in there.

Adam: Anabel, you goin' in?

- I'm the first one to see it, so I was the one who was picked.

Deborah: It was a total role reversal.

I felt like the kids were taking care of Mom and Dad.

Noah: Please don't get hurt.

Deborah: Nice job, honey.

Noah: Here we go, Anabel.

Anabel: Thank you.

Deborah: You're welcome.

Adam: All right, you got it?

Deborah: Go look at that rock.

Adam: Yeah, we gotta go to that rock.

Noah: Let's go.

♪♪ Agatha: Why is it so high?

Marilyn: High?

- They're trying to kill me or something.

Marilyn: So at the beginning, I um, tend to fight with her, she'll answer back, but then it was that special moment where I say, "Okay, Marilyn, shush.

"Just listen to her, just be next to her, because she doesn't want me to talk."

So I need to understand that, just be quiet.

She just want me next to her, and that worked.

Um, we started walking together and actually we took up the speed, and she started actually talking to me, and I'm like, "Okay, so this is working, maybe if I shush, she talks."

So, yeah.

Anderson: So then somebody was around here.

Let's make up some ground here.

That is gorgeous.

Marilyn: Look at that.

Who gets to see this?

Anderson: Man, this is beautiful.

Being outside of New Jersey, it, it's a great time, and uh, I think this is like a recharging for all of us.

Matthew: Wow.

I did all of this, and I don't wanna stop.

I need to go to my goal.

Anderson: This is amazing.

Marilyn: Definitely will try to do this more often with my family.

Anderson: Wow, that's gorgeous.

Marilyn: Okay, arriving.

- Mami, it's right there.

Marilyn: Oh, yeah.

Agatha: Right in front, right in front.

[splashing] We start off really bad, but we eventually got it, and then our pace started getting faster and faster, which is why I really appreciate what she did.

Agatha: Just keep our head in the game and then we'll just get there as soon as possible.

♪♪ Colin: The final leg of today's journey doesn't get any easier, dropping 3,000 feet down a steep rocky route as families carefully make their way to Camp 2.

♪♪ Adam: This trail's made for a billy goat, not me.

♪♪ Noah: You got it, dad.

- I was really feelin' it on the mountain, and you know, the kids just kept goin' and were super supportive, and Deb was super supportive.

Noah: There we go!

You got it, dad.

Adam: Didn't let me bring them down and stayed positive, so I'm super proud of everybody.

Noah: Keep goin', Pop!

Adam: March on, guys.

Agatha: Are there snakes here?

[wood rattling] Anderson: You okay?

Matthew: You good?

Marilyn: Man, I really messed up my hand when I fell.

I felt like, "Wow!"

We're like, working really well as a team.

And I was super proud of them.

Adam: They stayed focused, and, and got it all done right.

- Oh, there's moments trust me.

- [chuckles] - But um, yeah.

- Overall we got good kids.

♪ Agatha: Overall, the morning has been really rough, but then as the afternoon came, it started getting like, better.

Like, I'm just ready to go to sleep right now.

Anderson: They, they're communicating better, they're helping each other.

We're taking different roles, you know?

And we're learning, and maybe this, uh, is taking me out of my comfort zone too, and it's making me, uh, bring something out of me as well, which, you know, it helps, it helps all of us to push each other.

Marilyn: Our flags are there?

I'm having a lot of fun.

I'm actually kind of proud of me.

[sighs] Anderson: Open it up, Matt.

Anderson: Cool.

Marilyn: Let's go.

♪♪ Colin: It's been a long, tough day for the families, but there were bright spots.

Anabel and Noah show that they can work together, share the leadership role, and even take care of their parents, and after a rough start, the Espinosa family show that they can make it through a challenging experience, while gaining time on the Boyers, who are now just 16 minutes ahead.

[lighter clicks] [flame wooshes] Deborah: Wah!

'Kay.

And we're cookin'.

Noah: I think mom and dad did a really good job today, I'm surprised.

I think, I think most importantly, we're worried about them.

Mom and dad have been doing not as, not as good as us.

I think it's more important for us to take care of them than it is to take care of ourselves, like... Anabel: Yeah.

I'm glad that me and you are at the front, though, and that we can work together.

- This little dynamic between us two is gonna help us maybe, maybe win this competition.

Anabel: Let's hope so.

Noah: Let's hope so.

Marilyn: Bellita, I'm so proud of you!

I thought you were going to give up at one point, to be honest with you.

- Uh, we went through a lot today, right?

A little bit discoordinated, right?

And then we picked it up.

Marilyn: This is another experience together.

Anderson: It's definitely something that we're gonna talk about for the rest of our lives.

Marilyn: Oh, yeah.

- This put us together to bond and have fun, and this is getting me in good shape with my hard abs.

- [laughs] Anderson: You know, good job today, overall.

The Boyers are watching their kids turn into adults before their eyes, and this experience is opening up lines of communication for the Espinosas, allowing them to share their true feelings.

Today, the families will race the final miles down the mountain, through the woods, and just when they think they are near the end, they'll have to plunge into a deep muddy swamp, forge their way through, and drag themselves across the finish.

Anabel: Oh, no.

Noah: You good, Anabel?

Anabel: Yeah.

I'm wicked unbalanced.

Adam: You know, it took so long for me to take you guys on a trip like this.

I hope when you guys have kids and you guys have a family, you don't wait so long.

- Yeah.

- Do it more.

And hopefully mom and I can like, tag along.

Anabel: Noah, you should lead.

Noah: I've loved this whole experience.

- Yeah.

- Pushing everybody along, making sure everybody works as hard as they can, and... I think that it's important for everybody to be outside and explore the wilderness.

Adam: Growin' up, my father used to take us camping, and you know, it was something that I enjoyed so much growin' up, and so, definitely a full circle moment for me, for sure.

Yesterday was a very tough day, iwas like I was giving up, um, Matthew was giving up, Agatha was giving up at one point, and if it wasn't because, you know, we keep pushing each other to do better, we wouldn't be here.

Agatha: I think we trust each other more, 'cause we know now we can like, depend on one another, and like, motivate one another.

Anderson: You guys are learning, so I'm very proud of that.

Marilyn: You guys think that we can jog a little bit or no?

- We still have .4 miles, so we've got more than halfway.

This is like, the fastest speed we've gone the whole time, so that's good.

Anderson: Good job, Matthew.

This experience has taught us a lot.

What they showed me this last couple of days is that they're, they're very independent.

Marilyn: Take the lead, Matt.

Anderson: They can be leaders, and they can be trusted, and they don't have to depend on me all the time.

Marilyn: We're close.

Adam: Look at your GPS, Noah.

Anabel: Look at the GPS, not the compass.

Noah: Shoot, I was wrong, I guess.

That's confusing.

Adam: Okay.

- It like, pointed straight that way when we were walking.

Adam: So where do you think we're supposed to go?

Anabel: Where are we supposed to go, Noah?

Adam: We're losing time, guys.

Marilyn: Hustle, hustle, hustle!

Anderson: All right, come on, huh?

Anabel: Come on, let's go.

We don't have time.

♪♪ [beep] Arriving.

Adam: All right, look around.

Trees, ground, rocks-- Noah: Got it.

Deborah: Nice, Noah.

Nice job, Anabel, good teamwork, guys.

Adam: These kids, you know, we really see what they are as young adults now.

These moments when they have to work together and they prove that they can do it was pretty awesome.

Both of 'em really showed growth.

Colin: To get to the next checkpoint, families will ramble two miles through the forest, over streams, and along meadows.

Anderson: I think it's time for you to check the distance, Mami.

Marilyn: Well, based on the GPS, we're like, super close.

Anderson: Okay.

Marilyn: And this time I'm not kidding.

Adam: Cool bridge.

- Look at this pretty little bridge.

Anabel: Yeah, see, just reminding me more and more of home.

Noah: Yeah, I know.

Anderson: Distance.

Marilyn: Well, we went from .11 to .18.

Anderson: Did we go too far off?

Anabel: Keep up this pace, we'll be all set.

Anderson: Check GPS, check GPS, Mami.

Matthew: There's probably another path.

Anderson: Mama, come this way.

- It's probably taking a... okay.

I'm not good with this thing.

How did this happen?

It's going back to being far away.

Like, we have to go back!

Anderson: Aggy, come!

Marilyn: Andy, you use the GPS!

Anderson: Okay, so we do have to go back.

Agatha: We do?

Marilyn: We have to go back?

Anderson: Let me check.

Marilyn: Just go.

Go, guys, let's go.

This is-- so frustrated.

Noah: Keep it up, guys.

We're cruisin', absolutely cruisin'.

Anderson: Here we go, guys, come on!

Marilyn: All right, come on, open.

I missed a checkpoint, and that will cost our familiy, I don't know, probably like ten minutes.

All right, let's go.

Marilyn: Thank you.

♪♪ [exhales] I don't wanna lose because of me.

I feel like I've been here before.

Déjà vu.

Noah: Tough hill, dad.

- Uh... Agatha: Man, why do I have to run?

- The GPS-- Anabel: Where are we going, Noah?

- The GPS says right here-- I see Colin!

Adam: You see Colin?

Anabel: Can you see Colin?

Noah: Let's go!

Deborah: Oh, let's go!

Go, go, go!

Noah: Gonna have to power through.

Anabel: This might be the worst way to go through.

Colin: The Boyers are the first to reach the final hurdle.

To get to the finish line, they must navigate the cold and smelly waist-deep waters of the marshland.

[Boyers screaming] Noah: Watch out.

Adam: Look out, there's a little thing here.

Deborah: Ah, a little thing, good.

Adam: Whoa, not a little-- Anabel: Whoa, whoa, whoa, other way.

Noah: Let's not go that way.

Adam: We might've chosen the wrong way.

Matthew: We're almost there.

Marilyn: We can do this!

Noah: Go, dad, you got this!

Adam: I wanna help mom.

Anabel: Guys, right here.

Adam: Go, go, go.

Anabel: I see him!

There's Colin, let's go!

- Come on, guys, you're almost there!

[crosstalk] Noah: Come on, Mom.

Come on, Dad.

Come on, Anabel, let's go!

Colin: Great work, Boyer family, congratulations!

You have made it to the finish line area.

- Unbelievable.

- Woo!

Colin: But you have not won this race yet.

Deborah: Oh, no.

- I still have one last challenge for you.

You need to build your flagpole, raise the Boyer family flag high in the sky.

If you can do that before the Espinosas, you win this challenge.

Adam: All right.

Colin: Get to work!

Adam: Let's go, guys.

Deborah: Let's go, let's go, let's go, go!

- Oh wait, that's Colin over there!

Easy, we're almost there!

Anabel: No, too small.

Anderson: Go, go, go, go!

Anabel: It's not untangled.

Deborah: Yeah, you guys keep diggin'.

Marilyn: Go, go, go, go, go, that way!

What do we do?

Matthew: Jump, jump, jump.

- All right, all together, guys, all together!

Deborah: Wow, like, we're like, working together!

Colin: Teamwork, teamwork, teamwork, all the way to the finish line!

Deborah: It was just really awesome, it made me so happy.

Anabel: Okay, fill the hole, fill the hole.

Deborah: Fill it.

I honestly am taking away so much from this.

- Let me test it.

Boyer family, you are the winners of Survivalists!

[Boyers cheering] Colin: Look at that!

Adam: Let's go, guys!

Deborah: I love you guys!

That's crazy!

Adam: Great job!

- Deb.

As the mother of this family, what does it mean to be standing here victorious with uh, your kids and your husband?

- I'm so glad that I was able to experience this with them.

Who gets this experience, who gets to do this with their family?

To be able to take a moment and just be together, and just remember the simple things in life.

So it's priceless.

Colin: Noah, what do you think you've learned that you can take back into the real world?

- Well, I think we learned that if you put your mind to it, you can pretty much do anything, even if it seems impossible.

Adam: It's unbelievable.

You know, you worry about your kids, but, after this, they're gonna be okay.

They proved it.

They're gonna be fine.

Anabel: It was something that our family needed, and it was a good chance for me and Noah to show ourselves to our parents and prove that we can do it.

You guys don't need to be there every second supporting us.

- $10,000, open 'em up, celebrate!

Adam: Open it up, good work, guys!

Colin: There you go, you did it!

[cheering] - Overall, it was just a positive experience for the whole family.

Deborah: I love you guys.

Adam: I love you guys.

Matthew: Come on!

Agatha: We gotta go.

Deborah: Good work, Matthew!

Adam: You guys got it, let's go!

Colin: Here come the Espinosas!

Marilyn: As we were getting closer, I'm like, "I think I see the Boyers there."

Colin: Come on, good job, you guys!

Good job, good job, come right here!

[cheering] Marilyn: I was in charge of the GPS, I was supposed to be the one who's like, not making this kind of mistake, so because of me, we lost, but I definitely win when it comes to my family.

Yeah, yeah, we got it.

We experienced something that we'd never done before.

- Congratulations, Espinosas, you finished, well done!

[sound of several kisses] Anderson: Good job, guys.

[kisses continue] Agatha: I was able to rely on my mom, because it was more emotional that we both went through, and I was able to rely on my dad physically, like strengthen.

I always know, like, they supported me, but I know for a fact, like, they 100% support me whatever I do.

- Do you think you've come closer as a family by the end of this experience?

- Oh, totally.

Totally, yeah; we definitely bonded, uh, we argue as any other family, but, uh, now we have a little bit of a taste of what it is to work together to get to the finish line, uh, literally.

Colin: Yeah.

- I've learned that just keep on going to your goal, and don't stop ever.

Anderson: Man, we've accomplished so much in such a short period of time.

This experience has definitely helped us realize we need to enjoy more time together.

Marilyn: Woo!

Adam: Great job, guys.

Deborah: Great job, guys.

Adam: Good work.

Anabel: You did well, you guys.

Colin: I love seeing that level of sportsmanship.

Deborah: There we go!
