How did that sound?
I think I like it.
Welcome to the Good Neighbor Club, a club I'm starting right now.
Cue the confetti.
(party trumpet blowing) (audience laughing) - Dang, wish we could've gotten the pyrotechnics, like I asked.
(audience laughing) - I don't think Uncle Mars would be too thrilled about fireworks in his garage.
(audience laughing) - Well, he's technically not my uncle.
(upbeat music) (audience cheering) - Just your coolest neighbor and soccer coach.
(audience and Uncle Mars laughing) And yeah, this is definitely a no-firework zone.
- Uncle Mars, did you get it?
- As promised, the coveted, world-famous Good Neighbor Guide.
(audience cheering and clapping) - Am I missing something here?
(audience laughing) That is a trash bag.
(audience laughing) - Don't be fooled by its humble packaging, the Good Neighbor Guide is where Uncle Mars chronicled all his adventures in being a good neighbor.
- I didn't invent the concept of being a good neighbor, but I did start the Good Neighbor Club.
- And now we are carrying the torch.
- Didn't you just say, "No fireworks in the garage?"
(audience laughing) - The metaphorical torch, Zip.
The Good Neighbor Club is back in business.
- Yes.
(everybody coughing) (audience laughing) - I think our first order of business should be dusting this thing off.
- When I was a kid, I loved meeting everybody who lived on my block, and I loved doing things to make this an amazing place to live.
- Like organizing the park cleanup and the famous Sunrise Yard Sale.
- Is that how you got your start at the rec center?
- Well, sort of.
I liked helping people.
I liked knowing everybody in my neighborhood.
- And you're sort of a big kid who loves playing.
(audience laughing) - Yeah.
Nothing wrong with that.
(laughing) - So what's in this book anyway?
- Ah, let me give you a tour of the Ultimate Neighborhood Scrapbook.
(upbeat music) (transition rustling) This book has pictures of the places that make up our neighborhood.
- [Zip] Hey, it's the park and playground - [Freddie] And there's the community garden being planted.
- [Uncle Mars] And how different people were showing up as good neighbors.
- [Zip] Is that my grandma?
- [Uncle Mars] (laughing) Sure is, Zip.
She would shovel the whole block when it snowed so everyone made it to work on time.
A total powerhouse.
(transition rustling) This book wasn't just made by me, it was a group effort.
Sure, I started the guide, but lots of neighbors contributed to it.
They shared pictures, wrote about their experiences, and made it a resource we could all use.
It has information on how things work and how to get stuff done.
And it was all made possible by neighbors.
(transition rustling) - I wonder what it means to be a good neighbor?
Can anyone be a good neighbor?
- Maybe it's time we add a new page with a definition.
- We can add pages?
(audience laughing) - Yeah, it's a living document.
(Freddie and Zip gasping) (dramatic music) - It's alive?
(audience laughing) - It means it's never really finished.
It should change and evolve, especially now that the club is back.
- Now we just need to figure out how to define a good neighbor.
- Get thinking, good neighbors.
(transition rustling) (upbeat music) - Let's start by defining what it means to be a neighbor.
- Easy, our neighbors are the people who live around us.
- Like the Welchs up the street.
- The guitar guy who sits out front in place.
- Anyone who lives near us.
- But what about the good part?
- Hmm, that's a little trickier.
- For me, a good neighbor is someone who helps you out.
Like remember when Mr.
Santos' basement was flooded and Uncle Mars and a bunch of other neighbors ran over to help him get the water out?
- Definitely a moment of good neighbor-ness.
I'll add help to the list.
- Mm, one day, I was so upset about losing my favorite hat that I started crying on my walk home, and Amy in the blue house came out and comforted me.
She told me to tell her stories about the hat and really listened, even though I was pretty covered in snot.
(audience laughing) - A good neighbor listens.
Hmm, I like it when our neighbors come together to celebrate at the block party.
So there are neighbors we know and neighbors we don't know, but even the ones we don't know show up.
- For community meetings.
- Park cleanup days.
- Maybe that one can be neighbors care.
- I like that.
(upbeat music) Zip, you know what all these words have in common?
- (gasping) They have vows and consonants.
(audience laughing) - They're all verbs.
Maybe being a good neighbor means doing things and taking action in the community.
- A good neighbor is what a good neighbor does.
(audience laughing) - I just remembered, there's another place we can look for answers.
- (gasping) Fortune cookies.
(audience laughing) - You know how Uncle Mars loves to tinker?
- Oh yeah, he once built me a combo alarm clock toaster.
(audience laughing) Which was great until I got hit in the face with a hot piece of bread.
- Hmm.
(audience laughing) Well, he made a way that we can talk to even more neighbors.
- (gasping) Neighbors outside of our neighborhood?
- (scoffing) Try across the country.
Meet the Neighbor Net.
(bright music) (system whirring) - Ah.
(audience laughing) Your ancient machine burped.
(audience laughing) - It's a messaging board where we can talk to good neighbors and they can tell us what's happening in their neighborhood.
- Does it actually work?
- Um, of course.
Watch this.
Hey, Neighbor Net, what does it mean to be a good neighbor where you live?
Hit us with your definition.
(audience laughing) (system whirring and beeping) - Whoa, whoa.
- [CJ] This is our neighborhood.
- [Everly] And this is our neighborhood.
- Boo.
And this is our neighborhood.
- [Everly] CJ, do you think we're being the best neighbors that we could possibly be?
- [CJ] How can we be better neighbors?
- What does it mean to be a good neighbor?
- Being a good neighbor means being caring, calming others' troubles.
- That's nice.
- What does it mean to be a good neighbor?
- To be friendly.
So it means you don't wanna yell at people.
- Mm.
- To be a good neighbor, you need to be joyful.
Being joyful will makes someone's day.
- Being helpful and helping your elders.
- To be a good neighbor is mostly to build a strong bond, and kind, because you never know how long you have with your neighbor.
- To be generous, always have a helping hand.
- Inspiring because you could be a bigger role model.
- Joyful, give a happy smile in a great way.
- To be a good neighbor is respectful because you never know what's going on in somebody's day.
- Being a good neighbor is being caring and helping people.
- Nice.
- What makes you?
- A good neighbor?
(upbeat music) (upbeat music) (hand slapping) (trash lids smacking) (leaves rustling) - [Both] How can you be a good neighbor?
(audience cheering and clapping) (transition rustling) - There's a bunch of different people in these pages, not just Uncle Mars.
- My grandma, some kid named Sven, a guy who visited from Kansas?
(audience laughing) - So instead of just getting one definition on what it means to be a good neighbor, we can collect a bunch of different responses.
- (gasping) A good neighbor guide for the people, by the people.
- And that's how we'll run this club.
- I like a club without a boss.
(audience laughing) - We can listen to each other, talk things out.
- Light a few fireworks.
(inquisitive music) (audience laughing) Kidding, I like the listening and talking bit.
(audience laughing) - And we can come up with plans to make the neighborhood even better.
(door knocking) - (gasping) Did you order pizza?
(audience laughing) - (sighing) I told you, we're getting a bunch of different perspectives on what it means to be a good neighbor, and you're on camera duty.
(audience laughing) - But maybe we should order pizza too.
(audience laughing) (upbeat music) (transmission hissing) - Okay.
(laughing) - Aren't you coming in?
- Being a good neighbor.
- I think.
- To me, a good neighbor is someone.
- Who says hello on the street.
- Someone who lets you use their snowblower on a stormy day.
- Don't take my parking spot.
My trash cans were there for a reason.
(neighbor speaking in foreign language) - I think a good neighbor is someone who.
- Cares about the people I live next to.
- Including those who seem different.
- And who just checks in.
- They hear each other out even when they don't agree.
- There are so many ways to solve a problem, and we don't all have the same idea.
- We all live differently, and we should be able to celebrate those differences.
- I wanna take this moment to talk to you about being kind to cats as well as people.
- A good neighbor notices the world around them.
- They should be thoughtful.
- Is somebody who shares food.
- Good neighbors are always ready to band together for the inevitable alien invasion.
- [Freddie] Zip.
- And they should be a doer.
Get off the couch, get out of their house and do something, as long as it's not taking my parking spot.
- A good neighbor always tries.
- A good neighbor always cares.
- A good neighbor gives pizza to their hardworking cameraman.
(audience laughing) Come on, you guys.
Just a small banana pepper and a sausage pie?
(audience laughing) And we seriously do have to talk about.
