Tonight marks the beginning of our fifth season on PBS Kansas, and I am so pleased and honored to be with you once again to talk about books, authors and the wonders of a reading life.
I'm extremely grateful to have this opportunity to share with all of you in this regard.
I want to first thank Victor Hogstrom, the president and CEO of PBS Kansas, who saw fit to give me a chance.
I also want to thank my director, Phil Searle, who adds the magic to each program, as well as Allen Atha, Sara Leftwich, which and all the other talented people who helped put us on the airways.
I also want to express appreciation to all of you who have over the years reached out to me with kind words about our programing efforts.
You have talked to me at the Wichita Art Museum, the downtown baseball stadium, the Kansas African-American Museum, Symphony in the Flint Hills, and the waiting room of a local health care provider.
I so enjoy having your affirmations of enjoyment about what we do and try to do here on our show.
Thank you for your feedback and for being a supporter of PBS Kansas.
I would also note that you can contact us at any time at the address on your screen.
We would love to have your recommendations, questions or suggestions about a book you would like to see reviewed and shared with the PBS Kansas family.
As I noted at the top of the show, we are beginning our fifth season of Seriously Good Reading.
In this regard, I want to remind you that all of our previous shows are available at the KPTS website.
Scroll down and click on the Inside the Cover icon and you can access over 100 prior programs.
And speaking of the joy and pleasures of reading, I recently discovered some wonderful books as I walked in.
Browse through the aisles of the Ford Rockwell branch of the Wichita Public Library.
It is now time to go inside the cover.
“I'd Rather Be Reading ” by Anne Bogel was copyrighted in 2018.
Subtitled “The Delights and Dilemmas of the Reading Life ” Bogel's book is a delightful read, and I often felt that she was talking to me.
For instance, she writes, And this quotation follows nicely summarizes my state of mind regarding our shows here on Inside the Cover.
Again, Of course, I really love sharing books with each of you out there on our show.
“Tolstoy and the Purple Chair ” by Nina Sankovitch which was another important and enjoyable read copyrighted in 2011 and subtitled “My Year of Magical Reading ” is a story of Sankovitchs efforts to climb out of the abyss of grief caused by the death of her older sister.
Three years had passed and Sankovitch vowed to read a book a day for a year in an effort to erase her pain.
And she did.
On that same visit to the library, I found “Furious Hours ” by Casey Cep.
I plan to devote a whole book to this show at a later date.
But let me leave you with this thought provoking quote “History isn't what happened, but what gets written down.
” That's our show.
We have talked about books written by authors who love books and reading.
What a great way to start our season.
I do hope that you will join us next time as we go inside the cover.
Goodnight.
Happy reading to you and yours.
